It’s Family Time~The Abington Parsons Family

Back in January 2014, I began a new blogging series called 52 Ancestors. The purpose of this series was to highlight one of your ancestors weekly for one entire year. My 1st post in this series was -- 52 Ancestors: #1, Abington Parsons

It’s time to revisit Abington Parsons or maybe Abingdon Parsons. I have now found it spelled both ways. Two major finds during this time period were the name of daughter Mary Parsons husband's with proof and a grandson given the Abington name by his father Thomas Parsons. 

Abington Parsons and his wife Mary (whose last name eludes me all these years) are my maternal 3rd Great Grand Parents. 

The first major find was an Anson County, NC Land Deed (DB 13:471-472) stating “a certain piece or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Anson in the State of North Carolina on Westfield Creek it being the distributive share of my wife, Mary Parsons of all the real Estate of her Father Abbington Parsons,...”

Mary Parsons named husband within this land deed was Matthew Sellers.

I also found another “Sherriff's Sale” announcement in a 1845 Cheraw newspaper advertising the sale of personal property of Mary Parsons.

1 Negro Woman named Fanny and child Sam, 1 Yoke of Oxen, 5 Head of Cattle, 10 Head of Hogs, 1 Clock, 1 Shot Gun, articles of Household and Kitchen Furniture, Farming Utensils, 1 Cart, &c.; levied on as the property of Mary Parsons at the suit of W. H. Ratliff and others vs. Mary Parsons.
* All except the Negroes will be sold on the second day of sale at Mary Parsons' house.

Mary’s husband Abington Parsons had died 13 April 1826 and I don’t believe this had anything to do with his estate. I don’t have a death date for Mary Parsons, the wife; but, by 1850 all the children had married and some had left the State and moved elsewhere. Noah Sellers and Timmy Parsons, his wife, along with her brother Raymond Parsons had moved to Carroll County, TN.  

There are also two other Parsons in Chesterfield County, SC in the 1850 Census that I believe are siblings to Abington Parsons, b. abt 1784. They are:

• Cynthia Parsons Knight, b. 12 Aug 1773
• James Parsons, b. 1770
• Its also quite possible Vincent Parsons of Anson County, NC borne about 1784 is also related.

The known children of Abington Parsons and his wife Mary, whose last name is unknow, with their spouses are:

• Ann Parsons, born June 27th  1818, intermarried with Richmond White
• Timmey Parsons, born September 2, 1819, intermarried with Noah Sellers
• Raymond Parsons, born December 5, 1820, intermarried with Alice [LNU].
• Elizabeth Parsons, born March 9, 1822, intermarried with William Sellers
• Thomas Parsons, born May 10, 1823, intermarried with Lavinia A. [LNU]
• Mary M. Parsons, born April 10, 1825, intermarried with Matthew M. Sellers

Raymond Parsons, the oldest son of Abington Parson, Sr., named his first-born son Abington B. Parsons. Abington B. Parsons was borne 11 February 1846 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. He married Sarah Elizabeth Cantwell on 1 December 1869 in McClendon County, Texas. Raymond Parsons died 29 November 1914 in Garvin County, Oklahoma.

Abington Parsons and his wife, Mary are my 3rd Great Grandparents.

Military Tuesday~Pvt. Elisha B. Privett

Company "K"

26th Regiment, NC Volunteers

Enlisted: 1 July 1861

Discharged: 20 November 1861

As a young lad of 16, Elisha B. Privett enlisted on 1 July 1861 into Company “K”, 26th Regiment, NC Volunteers. he served until November 1861 at which time  his superiors suggested that he be discharged as medically unfit. He was Muster Out of Service on 9 Dec 1861 with a disability discharge.

PRIVETT, ELISHA B. , Private
Born in Anson County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Anson County at age 16., July 1, 1861. Present or accounted for until discharged on December 9, 1861, by reason of disability. Later served in Company H, 145th Regiment N. C. Troops (4th Regiment N.C. Volunteers). [NC Troops 7:598].

Then something strange appeared in the records.

A young lad from Anson County, named E. B. Privett, age 18, appears in Raleigh, North Carolina and enlists with Company “H”, 14th NC Infantry on 24 July 1863. On 2 April 1865 he was captured and made a prisoners' of war at Point Lookout, Maryland. He signed an Oath of Allegiance and was released on 16 June 1865.

PRIVETT, E. B., Private
Resided in Anson County and enlisted in Wake County at age 18, July 24, 1863, for the war. Present or accounted for until Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on June 16, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.  [NC Troops 5:471]

No record has been found for Elisha B. Privett after his release on 16 June 1865, two months after the War has ended. If you know what happened to Elisha B. Privett, please contact me through this blog.

 Elisha B. Privett is my 2nd Great Grand Uncle.
