Hello! I am doing family research & my maternal roots in Chesterfield County, Cheraw South Carolina. I am related to Dizzy Gillespie though my grandmother. My great-grandfather James (Jim) Gillespie was brothers with Dizzy's father John Gillespie.
I thought Dizzy's (John Birks) father's name is James Penfield Gillespie. Dizzy's mom's name was Lottie (Powe) Gillespie. My family comes from Cheraw, SC as well. My 3rd Great-Grandfather's name was John Gillespie and had the following daughters, Martha, Meta, Louisa, Hattie and Mary. I can find no information regarding the mother's of the children. What is interesting to note is that Louisa married Lorenzo Dow Benton, who is the son of Caroline Powe and Charles Benton. Caroline's mother was named Charlotte Powe.
CaShawn, Thanks for reading my blog and your comments. Your journey ahead, researching roots in Chesterfield County, will be very rough, Pre Civil War records have been almost totally destroyed. I have researched this county for 38 years. If I can help in any way please contact me. Good luck in your endeavors.
Thanks for reading my blog and your comments about Dizzy's and his family. I haven't done any research on his family so I don't have any answers about the mother of the children.
