James A. Lewis was born about 1829 in Iredell County, North Carolina. His parents are unknown. Esther Adeline Sides, daughter of Daniel Sides and Esther Dry, was born on 14 Nov 1835 in Iredell County, North Carolina.
James A. Lewis and Esther Adeline Sides had 3 children before he enlisted into the Civil War on August 10, 1862
i. Prudence V "Prudie" Lewis was born on 15 Sep 1858 in Iredell County, North Carolina. She died on 11 Mar 1943 at the age of 84 in Iredell, North Carolina.
ii. John Bell Lewis, born abt Aug 1860, Iredell County, North Carolina; married Annie Gray, 17 Dec 1884, Iredell County, North Carolina; died 1 Mar 1887, Iredell County, North Carolina.
iii. Nelson Alexander Lewis, born 9 Apr 1862, Iredell County, North Carolina; married Nancy Elizabeth Summers, 22 Nov 1898, Iredell County, North Carolina; died 24 Jul 1940, Olin, Iredell, North Carolina.
James did not return home from the Civil War. He was captured at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1-3, 1863 and interred in Point Lookout POW Prison in St. Mary's County, Maryland. James A. Lewis died on 10 March 1864 at the age of 35 in Point Lookout, St. Mary's, Maryland. Cause of Death not Reported.
His widow, E. Adeline Lewis, claimed his effects on 17 December 1864. She never remarried.
Esther Adeline Sides Lewis moved back into her parents home until their death and then lived with her brother Noah Sides. She died on 7 Jan 1907 at the age of 71 in Iredell County, North Carolina.
Esther Adeline Sides Lewis is my 1st Cousin 4X Removed.
