It’s Family Time~Richard and Rebecca Sellers Family

Very little is known of Richard and Rebecca Sellers family. Richard was born about 1792 in Chesterfield County, SC, a son of Hardy Sellers and Mary Cook, daughter of Abram Cook and Feebe Mastin.

He married a young lady by the name of Rebecca about 1814 in Chesterfield County. After the birth of two children, Phebe E. in 1815 and Frances “Fanny” Sellers in 1817 the family moved to  Perry County, Tennessee's where they can be found in the 1820 Census.

The 1820 Census Family Composition is:

1 male 24-44 – Richard Sellers

1 female – 16-25 –Wife – Rebecca [Maiden Name Unknown] Sellers

1 Male under 10 – Son, Hardy Sellers

3 Female under 10 – daughters, Phebe E.; Frances “Fanny” and unknown Sellers

In the next Census for 1830 we find that the family has moved to Wayne County, Tennessee and has grown from 6 free whites to nine (9); two new sons and a daughter.

The 1830 Census Family Composition is:

1 male 30-39 – Richard Sellers

1 female – 30-39 –Wife – Rebecca [LNU]

2 males under 5 – John, Unknown

1 male 5-9 -

1 male 10-14 – Son, Hardy

1 female 5-9 – Daughter, Jane

2 females 10-14 – daughters, Phebe E.; Frances “Fanny”

Up until this point we know the family composition but we are missing two children, both males, one under the age of 5 and one between the age of 5 – 9. It quite possible these children either died as infants or at a very young age.

Looking at a Tennessee county map we can see that even though Richard and Rebecca had moved that they hadn’t moved very far. But, they have not yet settled down into their finial resting place and in 1836 and 1839 we find them in a Carroll County, Tennessee tax List.

Their rambling days are not over and the urge to moved to greener pastures has bitten again. This time Richard and Rebecca are headed for Mississippi. There in 1845 Mississippi Census we find the family enumerated in Tishomingo County. The 1845 Census shows 6 males and 6 females in the household.

There in the 3rd Column, Line 9 we find Richard Sellers and next we have Richard Sellers family entry for the 1850 Population Census:

I have identified 9 children for this Couple. If the family consisted of 6 males including the Father and 6 females including the Mother then I am missing one son. Mostly likely the one under 2 in the 1830 census.

viii.    Richard C. Sellers was born about 1838 in Tennessee. He served in the Civil War with Company: C, 1st Calvary.

Alll the children I have identified are listed with their parents with the exception of their eldest son Hardy Sellers. See Hardy's FindAGrave Memorial at:  https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/115600417/hardy-sellers

The 1860 Mortality Census reports that Richard Sellers died September 1859 from Flux. Rebecca is enumerated in 1860 Tishomingo County with 3 of her daughters and two sons. No record of Rebecca and several of her children has been found after 1860.

Richard and Rebecca Sellers are my 4th Great Grand Uncle and Aunt.
