Mrs. Rowena Drye, Widow of Col. George Drye

 Mrs. Rowena Drye

The burial of Mrs. Drye, widow of the late Col. George Drye of Casey, took place at the Cemetery here on Sunday afternoon. She died at her residence on Saturday morning. She was a member of the Baptist church, and highly esteemed by a large circle of acquaintances. An affecting incident at the grave was the presence of her son, Clay, who has been for more than three years in confinement at Frankfort. In view of his mother’s approaching dissolution, together with the fact that he had, according to usage of the institution, by good behavior merited an abridgement of his sentence, Gov. McCreary on Saturday evening remitted the remainder of his term. He immediately took train to Nicholasville-reached Danville a little after midnight, and got home Sunday morning, only in time to attend the remains of his mother to the tomb.                                                                                                                                                                                                  FALSTAFF

Rowena [LNU] married George Drye, Jr. about 1828 in Casey County, Kentucky. George Drye, Jr. was one of three sons born to George Drye, Sr. and his wife Anna Maria Phifer. This marriage year is based on their 1st born son, James J. Drye, who arrived on 14 January 1829.

No marriage certificate has yet been found for George, Jr. and Rowena; but, several on-lines trees shows her to be a Watkins without any listing of her parents. I’m highly skeptical of this information being factual.

George, Jr and Rowena had 9 children between January 1829 and January 1853 when their youngest, Clay was born.

Col. George Drye, Jr,. died on 10 February 1867 in Kentucky. Col. Drye represented Casey and Lincoln Counties in the State Legislature for the years 1867-1869.

Rowena D. Drye passed away on 7 April 1877. George and Rowena are buried in Hustonville Cemetery, Hustonville, Lincoln County, Kentucky.

If you have any information about George and Rowena Drye please send me an email or post comments to this blog post.

Lieut: Robert S. Davis

BIRTH: 1838

DEATH: 15 Mar 1864

Overton County, Tennessee

BURIAL: Officer Cemetery

Overton County, Tennessee

A horrific event occurred in March 1864 in Overton County, Tennessee. Federal Troops consisting of about 200 men surprised a Lt and 6 Privates on a farm near Monterey, Tenn. One of the privates' was hidden in the loft before Federal Troops enters the house and killed the other 5 Privates. This act saved the life of Pvt. James H. Officer. Lt. Robert “Bob” Davis, of D Company 8th Texas Cavalry was wounded. Up until this point some would say that this incident was an “Act of War” but what happened next with Lt. Robert Davis is best told in the attached document.

Document used Courtesy of Tim Burgess

Lt. Robert S. Davis was born in 1838, a son of James C. Davis and his wife Rachel. He was the 6th of eight children born to this couple. He enlisted on 12 Sept 1861, elected 2nd Lt., 7 January 1862. The eyewitness statement of Pvt. John Holman Officer shows the killing taking place on 12 March 1864; but, the Civil War Records of Lt. Robert S. Davis shows he was Killed on 15 March 1864.

It’s Family Time~Dempsey and Martha Jane (Tidwell) Rivers Family

The name Dempsey Rivers is pervasive throughout the Rivers lineage. Today's Dempsey Rivers  was born 23 January 1852 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. He was a son of Frederick W. Rivers and Synthia Matilda Knight.  Between December 1854 and April 1856 Frederick W. and Synthia packed their belongings and family and moved from Chesterfield County, South Carolina to near Birmingham, Alabama.

Their son, Richard Malachi Rivers wrote these words for a local newspaper “The Alabamian” sometime before his death in March 1944.

“I was born in Jefferson County near Warrior, Alabama, February 15, 1866. My father and mother came from South Carolina in 1852.

My father [had] taken up 820 acres of land near Birmingham, old Hawkins field where the fairground is now and swapped it for land (near) Robins Cross Road in 1856 and exchanged it for land near Warrior in 1858 and exchanged that land for land near Houston in 1872.”

Frederick W. Rivers and Cynthia were very prosperous in Alabama. The couple raised a family of twelve children.

Their son Dempsey Rivers was the 4th born child of this couple. If the family migrated in 1852 then Dempsey was just a baby. The 1860 Census, Jefferson County, Alabama showed daughter Elizabeth Temperance Rivers born in SC and her date of birth is December 1854.

At age 20, Dempsey Rivers married Martha Jane Tidwell on 15 September 1872.  Martha Jane, age 20, was the daughter of Benjamin Tidwell and Hannah Parmelia Byram. Dempsey, like his father, was a farmer.

Dempsey and Martha Jane Rivers had three children:

  i. Mary Jane Rivers, born 10 Nov 1873, Warrior, Jefferson, Alabama; married William Jackson Farley, 1894, Walker County, Alabama; died 12 Nov 1957, Walker County, Alabama.

ii. Frederick James Rivers, born 20 Jul 1877, Jefferson County, Alabama; married Margaret Sue Howard, 1 May 1896, Jefferson County, Alabama; married Annie Mayfield; died 23 Sep 1943, Warrior, Jefferson, Alabama.

iii. Benjamin Dempsey Rivers, born 11 Nov 1881, Jefferson County, Alabama; married Lucy Jane Stearns, 28 Sept. 1899, Mabletown, AL; died 28 Aug 1965, Warrior, Jefferson, Alabama.

They may have had more children if Dempsey had not passed at the early age of 36. Family legend says that Dempsey was murdered but I have not found any document that will substantiate this claim. Martha Jane also died at an early age of 41 on 23 July 1893. Their youngest Benjamin Dempsey Rivers was only 12 years old.

Ancestry Tree Public Photo and Document Search Engine

Did you know that there is a way to search all Ancestry trees for attached document without looking at each individual tree. I stumbled upon this by accident but try the hyperlink below to look for documents attached to  known person in a family tree on Ancestry. You will only find “Public” Images and Documents; not those marked Private.

The Hyperlink/URL is:
