52 Cousins~The Gideon Job Falkner and Nancy Sellers Family

Nancy Sellers was the first borne child of John Sellers and Henrietta Norwood. John and Henrietta were married about 1803 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. John and Henrietta had a large family of 14 children of which Nancy was the oldest.

Just across the Northern border of South Carolina in Anson County, North Carolina lived the family of Asa Elijah Faulkner and his wife Elizabeth Huntley. Thet had a small family of 3 sons and a daughter. One of those sons was Gideon Job Falkner, borne 10 November 1806.

Gideon Job Falkner and Nancy Sellers were married about 1830. This is an estimated dated based of the birth of their only child, Nancy Jane, who birth date is recorded as 9 March 1833. This date is recorded on Nancy Jane‘s FindAGrave memorial and should be used with caution. The source of this birth date is a Fulton County, Kentucky Death Certificate #26413 for Nancy Jane Falkner Phillipps.

Sadly, what was to be a happy moment in the lives of Gideon and Nancy turned into a tragic event when daughter Nancy Jane survived but Nancy (Sellers) Falkner, her mother, passed away.

Gideon Job Falkner next married Jane Tosh about 1838 in Carroll County, Tennessee. Again, this is based on said birth date of their first borne child, a daughter, borne about 1839. Keep in mind that this is the edge of the frontier, and many records were never completed or has otherwise been lost. No Marriage Certificate or Licensee has been for this marriage.

With the death of his wife Nancy, Gideon, a farmer, needed a wife to care for his baby daughter. In 1833, Gideon married Jane Tosh of Carroll County, Tennessee. Jane Tosh was borne 20 October 1804 in Christian County, Kentucky. She was a daughter of John Tosh and Margaret Ann Johnson.

Gideon Job Falkner and Jane Tosh had the following children:

i. Margaret Falkner, born abt 1839, Carroll County, Tennessee; married Dr. John Orr, 18 Oct 1865, Carroll, Tennessee; died bef 1878.

ii. Martin Falkner was born about 1843 in Carroll, Tennessee.  He died on 9 Dec 1915 at the age of 72 in Atlanta, DeKalb, Georgia.

iii. Elijah Falkner, born 22 Nov 1846, Carroll, Tennessee; married Elizabeth A. Scott, 13 Feb 1872, Carroll County, Tennessee; died 20 Jan 1913.

In the early 1880‘s Gideon sold his land to his son Elijah Falkner. Both he and Jane died within days of each other. Jane (Tosh) Falkner died on 1 December 1884; Gideon Job Falkner died on 5 December 1884.

Hon. Daniel Cook, Sr.

His sudden going on Feb. 24, 8 a. m. 1930, at the old historic Cook Home near Camden was a shock to Wilcox County. He had contributed to the social, business, political and religious life of our people for two generations -passing in his 81st year. His father, Daniel Cook, came from Darlington, District, S. C. in 1795 and was married to Miss Caroline McWilliams in 1843. Hon. Daniel Cook, Sr., was born June 24, 1849 and was married to Miss Sallie Funchess Crum, April 25, 1878, seven children issuing from this union- three living to be grown. Sr. Cook joined the Rock West Baptist Church of which his father was one of the founders at the age of 14 years. He loved this old church and served in it official capacity for almost a lifetime. In 1928 he was the instigator of movement to sell the Rock Church and the proceeds were to the Camden Baptist Church as fund to help in building an annex be known as the Reck West Annex. His membership also was transferred and he became a deacon and remained so until his death. No man was better or more favorably known in Wilcox County, as he had served in public capacity and was also widely known in the State.

He was buried from his home in the family cemetery, the pastors of Camden conducting service. His nephews served as active pall bearers. From every section of Wilcox the people come to pay tribute to the life of a good man. honored and loved. The historic hill covered by a multitude of sorrowing and appreciative people was an posing scene.

May he continue to live in the hearts of our people.

Surviving are a son, Abe Cook, and six grandchildren.

52 Cousins~Laura Elizabeth Page

Dempsey Page was borne about 1815, a son of Uriah Page and his wife, Grace [Last Name Unknown]. Dempsey was Uriah and Gracey youngest known son. He had one known brother (Sion) and two sisters (Mary “Polly” & Nancy S.).

At age 28, Dempsey Page married Melinda Brumley on 27 September 1843 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina.

Dempsey Page and Melinda Brumly had a family of six (6) children; 2 sons and 4 daughters. Initial research seems to show that at least three of these children died before reaching adulthood. This may change as I continue to research this family.

i. Jane C. Page was born about 1845. She died before 1860.

ii. Mary Ann Page, born abt 1847; married Robert E. May, 23 Dec 1867, Rowan County, North Carolina; died aft 1886.

iii. Simon Peter Page was born about 1849. He died before 1860.

iv. Laura Elizabeth Page, born abt 1852, Rowan County, North Carolina; married Lewis Henry May, 27 Nov 1870, Rowan County, North Carolina; married John Alfred Clampet, 1879, Rowan County, North Carolina; died bef 21 Aug 1886, Rowan County, North Carolina.

                v. Martha Page was born about 1857.  She died before 1870.

vi. John Allison Page, born abt Mar/Apr 1860; married Laura Ann Foust, 17 Mar 1881, Rowan County, North Carolina; died Apr 1883, Rowan County, North Carolina.

In this Blog Post we will focus on their 4th borne child, Laura  Elizabeth Page.

Laura Elizabeth Page was born abt 1852 in Rowan County, North Carolina. She was the fourth of six children borne to Dempsey Page and Melinda Brumley.

At age 18, Laura Elizabeth Page married Lewis Henry May, age 20. He like most young men of this era was a farmer or farm laborer.

May - Page Marriage

Laura and Lewis would have 2 children of which only one survived before he (Lewis) died in October 1883. Probate records shows that Lewis Henry Day left two minor children, Lewis Henry and Dempsey Lee and that Guardianship was assigned by Court Order to their Mother Laura Elizabeth (Page) Clampit.

After the death of Lewis Henry Day, his widow, Laura Elizabeth (Page) Day married John Alfred Clampet in 1879.

Clampet - May Marriage

John Alfred Clampet and Laura E. (Page) May would have the following children:

i. Nora Clampet, born 3 Aug 1880, Rowan County, North Carolina; married Samuel Rockwell Witherspoon, 24 Feb 1901; died 24 Jun 1920, Hendersonville, Henderson, North Carolina.

ii. Josephine Clampet, born 19 Jul 1882, Rowan County, North Carolina; married Charles L. Beaver, 15 Nov 1903, Rowan County, North Carolina; died 24 Feb 1955, Bear Poplar, Rowan, North Carolina.

The Application for Letters of Administration found, within Rowan County Probate folder, for Laura Elizabeth Clampet shows she died before 21 August 1886.
