It’s Family Time~Valentine ‘Vol’ Brock and Bethany Ginn

Valentine "Vol" Brock, son of James L. Brock and his wife Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Purvis, was born about 1821 in Alabama.  He was the oldest son of 11 children borne to James and Betsy. The family moved to Pike County about 1828 and Valentine spent his life there as a parishioner in the Silver Creek and Bogue Chito Church. He died on 22 Feb 1881 at the age of 60 in Washington Parish, Louisiana and was buried on 24 Feb 1881 in the Brock Cemetery, Walthall County, Mississippi.

Valentine "Vol" Brock and Bethany Thaney Ginn were married about 1845 in Pike County, Mississippi. Bethany Thaney Ginn, daughter of Jeptha Ginn and Penina Magee, was born in 1820 in Pike County, Mississippi.  She died on 10 Oct 1880 at the age of 60 in Washington Parish, Louisiana and was buried in the Brock Cemetery, Walthall County, Mississippi.

Valentine Brock and Bethany Thaney Ginn had the following children:
        i.    William Franklin Brock, born 22 Oct 1847, Pike County, Mississippi; married Sarah Brumfield, abt 1866; married Cynthia Elizabeth Alford, 11 Dec 1871, Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, USA; died 21 Aug 1910, Tylertown, Walthall County, Mississippi.
         ii.    Hannah B. Brock was born about 1849 in Pike County, Mississippi.
         iii.    Huriah Richmond "Huey" Brock, born 20 Apr 1849, Pike County, Mississippi; married Sophronia L. Holmes, 16 Dec 1869; died 10 Nov 1874, Pike County, Mississippi.
         iv.    Alexander Haverson "Bosa" Brock, born 21 Aug 1850, Pike County, Mississippi; married Lucy Rebecca Bickham; died 19 May 1880.
         v.    Dr. James Monroe Brock, born 22 Mar 1853, Pike County, Mississippi; married Armentha Martina Holmes, 21 Dec 1872; married Fannie McMichael, 6 Nov 1911, Grand Cane, La; died 21 Dec 1916, Mount Hermon, Washington, Louisiana.
         vi.    Dr. Jeptha S. Brock, born 15 Dec 1854, Warnerton, Washington Pr., LA; married Susan Alvaline Holmes, 7 Dec 1874, Brockdale, LA; died 7 Oct 1914, Warnerton, Washington Pr., LA.
         vii.    Elizabeth Eveline "Lizzie" Brock, born 14 Jan 1855, Pike County, Mississippi; married William Alfred Simmons, abt 1873, Pike County, Mississippi; died 14 Oct 1936, Pike County, Mississippi.
         viii.    Elizabeth Jane "Eliza" Brock, born abt Jul 1858, Pike County, Mississippi; married Jarrett Cylan Smith, 3 Oct 1878; died 21 Jun 1899.
         ix.    Levy O. Brock was born in 1858 in Pike County, Mississippi.  He died before 1870 at the age of 12.
         x.    Louella "Ella" Brock, born abt 1861, Pike County, Mississippi; married Iverson Eugene Smith, 1880, Pike County, Mississippi; died 28 Nov 1896, McComb, Ms 5 wks after the birth of infant twin sons.

Valentine Brock is my 2nd Cousin 4 times removed.

It’s Family Time~Huriah Richmond "Huey" Brock Family

Huriah Richmond "Huey" Brock was born on 20 Apr 1849 in Pike County, Mississippi. He was the son of Valentine “Vol” Brock and his wife, Bethany Thaney Ginn. He died on 10 Nov 1874 at the age of 25 in Pike County, Mississippi.

Huriah Richmond "Huey" Brock and Sophronia L. Holmes were married on 16 Dec 1869.

Sophronia L. Holmes, daughter of William Stovall Holmes and Jane Perkins Foil, was born on 23 Jul 1852 in Tylertown, Walthall County, Mississippi. She died in 1932 at the age of 80. She was buried in Magnolia, MS Cemetery.

Huriah Richmond Brock and Sophronia L. Holmes had the following children:

i. William Valentine Brock, born 15 Apr 1871, Pike County, Mississippi; married Samantha A. Smith, 8 Nov 1888, Pike County, Mississippi; married (2) Ida Lydia Conerly, 21 Aug 1902, Pike County, Mississippi; died 15 Jul 1943, Akron, Ohio.
ii. Ida A. Brock was born on 24 Dec 1872 in Pike County, Mississippi. She died Died young on 1 Jul 1893 at the age of 20 in Pike County, Mississippi.
iii. Janie Brock, born 24 Aug 1874, Pike County, Mississippi; married Francis Marion Burch, 17 Jan 1890, Amite County, MS; died 28 Jun 1950.

I have been unsuccessful, so, far, in determining why Huriah Richmond "Huey" Brock died at such a young age. 

Huriah Richmond "Huey" Brock  is my 3rd cousin 3 times removed.

Pike County -----.} I, W. F. Brock of Pike County, Miss. Of sound mind make this my will. I give devise bequeath the following described Real estate to my wife Synthia Brock the SE ¼ of S.W. ¼ S. 32, T. 1, R. 10.

The said W. F. Brock in the county of Pike State of Miss. On the 17^th day of Jan. 1910 signed the foregoing instrument and declared the same in my presents <sic> as his will and I at his request and in his presence on the said date have hereunto written my name as a subscribing witness.

William Franklin Brock is the son of Valentine Brock and Bethany Thaney Ginn. William Franklin, born 22 October 1847, was their first born child; he had 9 siblings, 4 sisters and 5 brothers. 

William Franklin was twice married. He and his first wife, Sarah Brumfield, had three daughters. Sarah died sometime after the birth of her 3rd child on 5 March 1870. William then married Synthia E. Alford on 11 December 1871. 

William Franklin Brock died on 21 August 1910 and was buried in the Family cemetery (William F. Brock Cemetery).

BrockNotice is hereby given that by virtue of a writ of fieri facias[1], issued out of the 26th Judicial District Court of La., in and for Washington Parish, in above entitled cause, and to me directed, I will proceed to sell at public auction to the last and highest bidder, on
Saturday, March 20, 1915
at the principal front door of the court house at Franklinton, La., between the legal sale hours for judicial sales, the following described property, to
wit:
First-240 acres of land more or less known as the Willie Brock place, lying on the Bogue Chitto River, bounded on the north by lands of J. S. Brock, on the east by the Bogue Chitto River, and being situated in Tp 1, south range 10 east, St Helena Meridian.
Second-Also a certain track of land in Washington Parish, Louisiana containing 200 acres more or less, in Jacob Alford hd or section No. 54, in Tp 1, south. range 10 east, on the west side of Bogue Chitto River, bounded on the north by lands of J. S. Brock, east by Bogue Chitto River, south by lands of Jane Brumfield or Jane Whittington, and west by public lands, and lands of J. S. Brock, being the lands purchased by J. S. Brock from Samantha Smith and William V. Brock, her husband, excepting therefrom 80 acres of land conveyed by J. S. Brock to M. T. Brumfield on Feb. 17, 1906.
Third--Also 200 acres of land more or less in said Parish of Washington, State of Louisiana, on the west side of Bogue Chitto River in said section 54. Tp 1, south, range 10 east, acquired by J. S. Brock from Valentine Brock as per deed of record in conveyance book No. 2, page 39 of conveyance records of Washington Parish.

J. S. Brock is Dr. Jeptha S. Brock, son of Valentine “Vol” Brock and Bethany Thaney Ginn.  He died 7 October 1914 in Warrenton, Washington Parish, Louisiana. Since the sheriff sale took place in February of 1915 it was most likely driven by probate proceedings to settle his estate. This will be added to my “to do” for my trip to the LDS Family History Library later this year.


Valentine “Vol” Brock is my 2nd cousin 4 times removed and his son, Jeptha, is my 3rd Cousin 3 times removed.

Obituary Sunday~ Dr. Jeptha S. Brock Dies

Dr. Jeptha S.Brock, son of Valentine Brock and Bethany Thaney Ginn, died 7 October 1914. Jeptha was born Dec. 15, 1854 in Washington Parish, Louisiana. His grandparents, James L. Brock and Elizabeth Purvis migrated from Chesterfield County, South Carolina through Georgia, Alabama and on to Mississippi and Louisiana about 1820.

Dr. Jeptha married Susan Alvaline Holmes on Dec. 7, 1874 in Brockdale, Louisiana.

Dr. J. S.  Brock, of Warrenton, father of our esteemed physician, Dr. J. L. Brock died on Wednesday afternoon at five o’clock after an illness lasting thru all this year. Interment is to take place in the family burying ground this afternoon at three o’clock.[1] [The Era-Leader, October 08, 1914, Image 3, col 2]
