Death of Eli P. Brock

Eli P. Brock is a 2nd Cousin 4 times removed. He was born 2 December 1827 in Marion County, Mississippi, a son of James L. Brock and his wife Elizabeth Purvis. He was the 4th born of 11 children.

On 20 November 1850, Eli P. Brock married Winney E. Stallings, daughter of James Stallings and Sally Pearson. To this union were born 7 known children. Sadly, Eli P. Brock passed away sometime before 23 December 1878 leaving Winney a widow with 4 children under the age of twenty-one. The youngest being a son, age 6.

Pike County, Mississippi was created in 1815. It’s parent county before creation was Marion County. Records for the County prior to 1882 are almost non-existence; but, I did find this land Deed dated 23 December 1878 in Deed Book  “A” page 85.

In this Deed,  Winney Brock, widow, and her two adult daughters (Nancy and Elizabeth) are selling their interest in the estate lands of Eli P. Brock to her oldest son, Alexander Brock.

The land deed provides indirect evidence that Eli P. Brock passed away sometime before 23 December 1878.

It’s Family Time~ Rebecca Brock and Isham Brackin Hinson

Its-Family-Time2
About 1818/1819 James L. Brock and Elizabeth Purvis migrated with her Father James Purvis, Sr and his brothers Gilbert, Joseph and others to Clarke County, Alabama and then on to Hinds/Rankin/Simpson County Mississippi.

About 1834 or maybe early 1835 Rebecca, age 15, daughter of James L. Brock and Elizabeth married a young man named Isham Bracken Hinson, age 26. Isham Brackin Hinson, son of John Hinson, was born on 24 Nov 1809 in GA.

Isham Brackin Hinson and Rebecca Brock would have four children before she passed away in 1846 most likely due to childbirth complications.

i. John Hinson was born on 28 Nov 1835.
ii. Mary Elizabeth Hinson was born on 27 Apr 1840.
iii. Sarintha Hinson was born on 22 Jan 1843.
iv. James Brock Hinson was born on 23 Jul 1846.

The unexpected death of Isham’s wife Rebecca left him with 4 small children to raise; a very difficult position for a farmer working the fields every day.

Isham's new wife turned out to be Rebecca’s 1st Cousin, Nancy Brock, the widow of John Glasscock with 4 children of her own. But that's a new story in its own right.

Rebecca Brock Hinson is my 2nd Cousin 4 times removed.

It’s Family Time~Mary Jane Purvis

It's Family Time
While very little proof exists, circumstantial evidence shows that after my 2nd Great Grandmother Sarah Jane Graves died in December 1893 that her husband William A. Purvis remarried.

DEATH: Messenger-Intelligencer issue of January 4, 1894,  page 3, McFarlan News - The funeral of the wife of Mr. Wm. PERVIS was preached by this writer in the M. E. Church of this place last Sunday [31 Dec. 1893]. She was a good old woman. She had suffered intensely for fifteen months from cancer. She was a member of the M. E. church about 20 years. [SOURCE: Steve Bailey]

Anson County, NC Deed Book 33, page 370 is a land deed from William A. Purvis and  Elizabeth Purvis to J. D. Rhyne for 12 acres of land. This 12 acres is part of a 30 acre parcel that was purchased by William A. Purvis and Sarah Jane Graves Purvis back in the 1880’s. The remaining 18 acres was left  with a life estate for Elizabeth Betsy Purvis (DB 34, page 491-492).

DB 33, pg 370

This second marriage has been and still is a “real” puzzle for me. The 23 September 1899 land deed (DB 33, page 370) clearly refers to Elizabeth as his wife. Yet, back in 1880 Betsy and Mary Jane are in the household of William and Sarah and at that time she was also known as Betsy Purvis.

As you can see Betsy and her daughter Mary J. (Lines 38 & 39) are listed in the William A. Purvis household. William J. Purvis (Line 490) is the son of William A. and Sarah and their only child.

About 1888, Mary Jane Purvis and Charlie Franklin Lang were married in Anson County, North Carolina. Charlie was 20 years old and Mary Jane was 15.

Mary Jane Purvis and Charlie Franklin Lang had the following children:
i. Ella Jane Lang, born 4 Aug 1889, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Jack E. Dillard; died 18 May 1960, Spartanburg, South Carolina.
ii. John Henry Lang, born 14 Jan 1893, Anson County, North Carolina; married Edith Melvine Stowe; married Blonnie Irene Ledford; married Edna Eveline Ashley; died 29 Apr 1968, Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina.
iii. Unnamed Lang was buried in Jan 1893. He was born on 14 Jan 1893 in SC. He died on 14 Jan 1893 at the age of 0. SOURCE: Gordon E. Lutz, Lincolnton, NC.
iv. Frances Elizabeth "Effie" Lang, born Mar 1895, Marshville, Union, North Carolina; married Jacob Brown, 26 Nov 1910, Union County, North Carolina; married Will L. Threate, 1916, Union County, North Carolina; married Floyd Pinkney Reinhardt; died 13 Mar 1949.

Mary Jane Purvis Lang died with the birth of her last daughter Frances Elizabeth “Effie” Lang in March 1895. Charlie Franklin Lang married Dora Watkins in 1898 and would have 5 additional children; 2 daughter and 3 sons. No obituary or tombstone has been found for Mary Jane Purvis Lang. It’s as if she has been totally forgotten.

Surname Saturday – Glasscock

John Glasscock, born about 1812 married Nancy Brock. They were married about 1833 in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana. Nancy Brock, daughter of William Brock and Charlotte [LNU] {some say Farley}, was born about 1812 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. She died on 2 Nov 1899 at the age of 87 in Livingston Parish, Louisiana. John died sometime before 1850.

John Glasscock and Nancy Brock had the following children:

i. Jane Glasscock was born about 1835.
ii. Margaret A. Glasscock was born about 1837.
iii. Aletha M. Glasscock was born about 1838 in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States.
iv. James Polk Glasscock, born 24 Nov 1845, Utica, Hinds Co., MS; married Winnie C. Ervin, abt 1869,Livingston Pr., LA; married Martha Adeline Mann, 12 Jan 1888, Livingston Pr., LA; died 18 Apr 1931, Albany, Livingston, Louisiana, United States.

Nancy Brock Glasscock is a widower, age 38, in the 1850 Hinds census[1] with 4 children - Jane GLASSCOCK, Female, age 15, born in LA; Margaret A. GLASSCOCK, Female, age 13, born in MS; Aletha M. GLASSCOCK, Female, age 12, born in MS and James GLASSCOCK, Male, age 5, born in MS.

Meanwhile, over in Pike County Mary Jane Brock Hinson has passed away sometime around 1846 and her husband Isham Brackin Hinson has moved into the home of Mary Jane parents James L. Brock and his wife Elizabeth Purvis.[2] Isham has brought with him his 4 children - John HINSON, Male, age 12, born in MS; Elizabeth HINSON, Female, age 07, born in MS; Sarintha HINSON, Female, age 05, born in MS; James HINSON, Male, age 04, born in MS; Isham HINSON, Male, age 33, born in MS.

There is no doubt that William Brock and his wife Charlotte and James L. Brock and his wife Elizabeth Purvis are related. Without DNA testing we may never know the exact relationships but it’s a known fact that all the Brock in Chesterfield County, South Carolina are descendants of Johan Valentine Brach/Brock and his two wives. There are very few existing records for Chesterfield County prior to the Civil War. Most were destroyed (burned) by General Sherman during the War.

So it is not surprising that sometime about 1851 that Nancy Brock Glasscock and Isham Brackin Hinson were united in Holy Matrimony. Now, Ancestry would have us to believe this happened on 30 November 1841 in Hinds County, Mississippi.[3] However, the 1850 Census for both families proves that both had lost their spouses prior to enumeration of the 1850 Census. Thus the marriage had to have taken place the latter part of 1850 or sometime later.

In 1860, we find this blended family together in Livingston Parish Louisiana.[4] Isham and Nancy have two children of their own Mose Pierce Hinson, b. 7 September 1852 and Franklin Marion, b. 8 October 1855. Also in the Household is a James K. POLK, male, age 16, born in Mississippi. James K. POLK is most likely James Polk Glasscock, born 24 November 1845 to Nancy Brock and John Glasscock.

The birth of Isham and Nancy first born child in November 1852 indicates that they were most likely married prior to February 1952.

Isham Brackin and Nancy Brock Hinson are buried in Stafford Cemetery No. 1, Holden, Livingston Parish, Louisiana. It is not known where Mary Jane Brock Hinson is buried.

Their tombstone can be viewed here. (Isham and Nancy Brock Hinson Tombstone)

Strife in the Family

James L. Brock was born about 1793 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He and his family are enumerated in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Census, Pike County, Mississippi. He died on 19 Mar 1871 at the age of 78 in Pike County, Mississippi.

James L. Brock and Elizabeth Purvis were married about 1819 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Elizabeth Purvis, daughter of James Purvis, Sr. and wife unknown, was born in 1806 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. She died on 1 Apr 1873 at the age of 67 in Lexie, Walthall County, Mississippi.

James L. Brock and Elizabeth Purvis had the following children:

      i. Mary Jane Brock, born abt 1820; married Isham Bracken Hinson, abt 1837; died bef 1841.

ii. Valentine Brock, born abt 1821, Alabama; married Bethany Thaney Ginn, abt 1845, Pike Co. MS; died 22 Feb 1881, Washington Pr.,LA.

iii. Catherine Brock was born in 1825 in Mississippi.

iv. Eli P. Brock, born 2 Dec 1827, Marion Co., MS; married Winney E. Stallings, 20 Nov 1850, Pike Co., MS; died abt 1878, Pike Co., MS.

     v. Elizabeth Brock, born abt 1828; married James Tom Dillon; died 4 Jul 1900, Centerville, Walthall Co., MS.

vi. Alexander B. Brock, born 1829, Pike County, MS; married Sarah Elizabeth Williams, abt 1859; died 30 Jan 1892, Walthall County, MS.

vii. Nancy Brock, born abt 1830, Pike Co., Mississippi; married Elkanah L. Morris; married Thomas James Miller, abt 1863, Washington Parish, Louisiana; died 22 Aug 1896.

viii. Angeline Brock, born abt 1835, MS; married Raiford L. Miller.

ix. James L. Brock, born abt 1837, Pike Co., MS; married Mary Gabriella Bankston, 1858; died 29 Dec 1886, Pike Co., MS.

      x. William Brock, born 5 Apr 1840, Pike Co., MS; married Clara Ann Smith, 15 Dec 1858; died 14 Jan 1896, Pike Co., MS.

xi. Martha Jane Brock, born 6 Aug 1843, Pike Co., MS; married Willis Richard Simmons, aft 12 May 1860; died 24 Jun 1906, Pike Co.,MS.

James L Brock and family moved from Chesterfield County, South Carolina about 1818 when his Father-in-law, James Purvis, Sr. and brother Gilbert Purvis moved their family down through Georgia to Clarke County, Alabama and finally settling in Hinds and Rankin County, Mississippi.

Somewhere along the way, some family strife developed. When Gilbert Purvis' son, Gilbert Johnson Purvis died in November 1835 he left a WILL that he had written in April of 1835.

The following paragraph is quoted from Gilbert Johnson Purvis WILL[1]

"In the first place as all of my property is now in dispute between myself & James P. J. Purvis and William Purvis and in consequence thereof I can make no specific bequests or legacies, it is my direction, will and desire that my executors herein after named shall forthwith and without delay proceed to ascertain & procure the portion of my father's estate the late Gilbert Purvis to which I am of right entitled. I claim all of the estate of which my mother was possessed at the time of her death---upon which property the said James P. J. Purvis has administered---For the negroes I have brought an action of replevin in the circuit court of Hinds County. I wish my executors herein after mentioned to prosecute or abandon that suit as they may be advised by the counsel whom I have employed in this suit, Messrs. Marsh & Mayson---Should the said suit be abandoned or should my executors herein after named be cast therein there and in that case I hereby direct my Executors to file a bill in chancery or commence such other suit as may be necessary & proper to procure from the aforesaid James P. J. Purvis, administrator as aforesaid, the full distribution & share of the estate of my deceased parents to which I am entitled insisting upon the advance made by my deceased father the said Gilbert Purvis to James Purvis the father of the said James P. J. Purvis in the lifetime of them both, and after my Executors shall have become possessed of the property to which I am entitled it is my will and desire that they divide the same after the payment of all my just debts equally share and share alike between all the children of James Purvis Senr. of Rankin except to Wright Barnes and Nancy his wife & James Brock & Betsey his wife formerly Nancy & Betsey Purvis to them I give and bequeath nothing---Provided however & it is my express will and direction that before any final distribution of my estate is made that my executors secure & secure effectually for my sister Sally Purvis, out of said estate the annual sum of one hundred & fifty dollars to be paid to her the said Sally for and during the term of her natural life, & to be paid at the end of each and every year."

In the early part of the WILL paragraph, Gilbert Johnson Purvis says that:

" all of my property is now in dispute between myself & James P. J. Purvis and William Purvis:"

In this sentence Gilbert Johnson Purvis is talking about two brothers James P. J. Purvis and William H. H. Purvis These two men are his nephews, sons of a deceased brother named James Purvis.

The deceased brother is also referred to as Johnson J. Purvis thus making it very confusing. Below is the elusive Johnson J.  Pervis  and James P. J. Pervis on the 1831 Simpson County, MS tax list.[2] This is believed to be Father – Son.

" I hereby direct my Executors to file a bill in chancery or commence such other suit as may be necessary & proper to procure from the aforesaid James P. J. Purvis, administrator as aforesaid, the full distribution & share of the estate of my deceased parents to which I am entitled insisting upon the advance made by my deceased father the said Gilbert Purvis to James Purvis the father of the said James P. J. Purvis in the lifetime of them both, and after my Executors shall have become possessed of the property to which I am entitled"

In the above section we have Gilbert Johnson Purvis clearly stating that "my deceased father is Gilbert Purvis and that he made an advance to James Purvis and that James Purvis is the Father of James P. J. Purvis."

"the full distribution & share of the estate of my deceased parents to which I am entitled insisting upon the advance made by my deceased father the said Gilbert Purvis to James Purvis the father of the said James P. J. Purvis in the lifetime of them both"

The final strife in this family is with two sisters – Nancy and Betsy. Ironically, these two sisters are Gilbert Johnson Purvis 1st Cousin, daughters of James Purvis , Sr.

"after the payment of all my just debts equally share and share alike between all the children of James Purvis Senr. of Rankin except to Wright Barnes and Nancy his wife & James Brock & Betsey his wife formerly Nancy & Betsey Purvis to them I give and bequeath nothing"

One thing is certain from the information presented; James & Elizabeth can forget any inheritance from her 1st Cousin Gilbert Johnson Purvis.

I have found no evidence of a lawsuit in this case but will continue looking for answers. I have film on back order from the LDS Library related to these individual and hopefully that back order will be filled soon.

If you have information about these individuals please contact me by e-mail or comment on this blog.
