Amanuensis Monday~Cabarrus County Land Deed~Eve Dry to George Brown

I spent this past week researching early Land Deeds in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. I was researching the Surname DORR/DERR, angelized to DRY/DRYE. One Land Deed, contained within this post, was of interested to me and caused a bit of bewilderment.

The Land Deed dated 21 October 1808 was between a Eve Dry and George Brown. Eve Dry is selling to George Brown 70 acres of land in Cabarrus County, North Carolina.

Transcription:

This indenture made the 21st day of October 1808 Between Eve Dry of the County of Cabarrus + Sate of No. Carolina of the one part and George Brown of the County + State aforesaid of the other part Witnefseth that for + in consideration of the Sum of 214 dollars united States Currency to her in hand paid  the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged She the said Eve Dry hath given granted Bargained + Sold ye unto the Said George Brown his heirs and afsigns forever a Certain Tract of Land lying + being in Cabarrus County and on the waters of Little Coldwater Creek Beginning at a Pine Rob't. Lees corner and Runs then with or near P. Lees line So. 60 E. 116 pole to a W. O. Sapling then Et. 66 pole to a p. O. (?) on Millers line  Thence Nt. 20 Et. 58 pole to a Red Oake Martin Stough's Corner then with Said Stough's line N. 36 Wt 64 poles to a stake on Said line then So. 72 W. 154 pole to the Beginning Containing Seventy acres more or lefs.  To have and to hold the said Lands and premises hereditaments and appurtenances unto the Said George Brown his heirs and afsigns Shall and May forever hereafter peacefully quietly have hold Occupy pofsefs and Enjoy the above granted lands + premises without the let (?) or molestation of any person whatsoever and free and clear of and from all Manner of Encumbrances whatsoever and the Said Eve Dry doth Oblige herself her heirs and afsigns to Warrant and Defend the aforesaid Granted  Lands and premises from her and her heirs and against and from any person or persons whatsoever and the Said George Brown his heirs and afsigns forever. In Witnefs whereof She the Said Eve Dry hath hereunto Set her hand and Seal thee day and year first above Written.

The Deed was perplexing because my database only contained two Eve Dry and I could not fathom how either of these two Eve’s could be connected to this land. 

• The first Eve Dry was born 1 Feb. 1757 and was the wife of Owen Ulrich Dry and her surname, before marriage, is unknown.
• The second Eve Dry was born about 1775 and the daughter of Johan George Dry, Sr and Catherine Betchel who moved to Lincoln County, State of Kentucky.

There is an interesting twist to the above Land Deed. One of the Witnesses to the Deed is George Stough. In Deed Book 7, page 204, Jacob Dry of Warren County, Kentucky is selling 87 acres of Land to George Stough.  Could this be significant?

The Land in Deed Book 7, page 199 is described as stated here:
Beginning at a Pine Rob't. Lees corner and Runs then with or near P. Lees line So. 60 E. 116 pole to a W. O. Sapling then Et. 66 pole to a p. O. (?) on Millers line  Thence Nt. 20 Et. 58 pole to a Red Oake Martin Stough's Corner then with Said Stough's line N. 36 Wt 64 poles to a stake on Said line then So. 72 W. 154 pole to the Beginning Containing Seventy acres more or lefs. 

The Deed of Gift (DB 5, page 197) from George Dry, Sr., land possessed of his wife Catherine Betchel at the time of her death,  is not described within the deed:
"the said George Dry, Sen. have unto moving have given Granted Bargained & Confirmed & by these presents do give grant Bargain & Confirm unto the said Eve Dry all & singular My land, goods, Chattel, personal Estate whatsoever in whose hands or possession it may be in within the State of North Carolina to have & to enjoy all & singular the Said Lands goods & chattel & personal Estate aforesaid unto Eve Dry her heirs and assigns forever to her own proper use & behalf  and I the Sd. George Dry from Me & My heirs forever all & singular the  Lands goods & Chattels which Catherine Dry my wife had in Pofsefsion in the State of N. Carolina at her death"


Placing Eve Dry with the proper family is going to require additional research.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Marriage Bond, Peter Kauble and Christina Dry

Peter Kauble and Christina Dry

Married: 17 October 1797

Cabarrus County, NC

Peter Kauble  and Christina Dry were married on 17 Oct 1797 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina.

There are many Peter Kauble/Cauble/Coble in Cabarrus County and so far I have not learned much about the Peter Kauble that married my cousin Christina Dry.

Christina Dry was  born about 1777, a daughter of Owen Ulrich Dry and his wife Eve (maiden name unknown). Christina was twenty years of age when she married Peter Kauble.

Family Lineage/Trees on-line shows that Peter and Christina had 11 children; 4 sons and 7 daughters. All the children are named within the Last Testament and Will of Peter Cauble, Jr. (Will Book H, page 478-481; Rowan County, NC). However, this Peter Cauble wrote his will in August 1839 and reported that his name wife’s name was Catherine.



This Peter Cauble is also reported to have been born in 1738. I believe that this Peter Cauble married Catherine Bruner.

I have not found any proof of birth or death dates for either Peter Kauble or his wife Christina Dry. I see no evidence supporting any of the dates published on-line thus making them all very skeptical.

Christina Dry Kauble is my 1st Cousin 5 Times Removed.

Tombstone Tuesday~Eve Dry, 1st Wife of Owen Dry

The past 189 years have been very harsh on this tombstone and today it is unreadable and would be totally indistinguishable among other rocks of the same color and size.

Eve Dry was the first wife of Owen Ulrich Dry, son of Charles Dry and Christina Muss. Based on the birth of their known first born, Owen and Eve were married about 1776/77.

Eve and Owen had 4 known children before her death in 1828. On 9 December 1834, Owen remarried uniting with Catherine Polk, age 70.

The "Standard" published the marriage of Mr. Owen Dry, aged 80, to Miss Catherine Polk, aged 70, and adds with evident satisfaction ---"all for the Administration "----.
What else could be expected of individuals in their dotage?

In Cabarrus county, 9th inst., by John Fuggart, Esq., Mr. Owen Dry, age 80, to Miss Catherine Polk, age 70 --"all for the Administration "---Communicated.

Eve Dry is buried in the Saint Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery where most of the early pioneer Dry families are buried.

Eve Dry is my 4th Great Grand Aunt by marriage to Owen Dry.

Today’s subject is a Deed of Gift from George Dry, Sr. of Kentucky to his Daughter Eve Dry of North Carolina.

Know all men by these presents that I, George Dry, Senior of Lincoln County, State of Kentucky, in consideration of the natural love + affection which I have + bare unto my beloved daughter Eve Dry in the County of Cabarrus + State of North Carolina + also for divers causes + consideration Me the said George Dry, Sen. have unto moving have given Granted Bargained + Confirmed + by these presents do give grant Bargain + Confirm unto the said Eve Dry all + singular My land, goods, Chattel, personal Estate whatsoever in whose hands or possession it May be in within the State of North Carolina to have + to enjoy all + singular the Said Lands goods + chattel + personal Estate aforesaid unto Eve Dry her heirs and assigns forever to her own proper use +behalf  and I the Sd. The Deed above states that Eve Dry is the Daughter of George Dry, Sr and his wife Catherine.
I, George Dry, Senior of Lincoln County, State of Kentucky, in consideration of the natural love + affection which I have + bare unto my beloved daughter Eve Dry in the County of Cabarrus + State of North Carolina
and
that the Lands goods + Chattels which Catherine Dry my wife had in Pofsefsion in the State of N. Carolina at her death

The Deed shows that George Dry, Sr. lived in Lincoln County, Kentucky and  was alive and well on the 13th day of November 1804 when he signed this deed giving his land in Cabarrus County, NC to his Daughter Eve Dry a Deed of Gift.

Yet, there is much conflicting information about these two in on-line trees.

For instance in this tree we can see that George died 9 years before he signed the above deed.



A Kentucky Tax list shows that George Dry, Sr. was alive and well in 1800.



The above tree also shows that Eve was born in 1774 when her mother was 54 years old.

Another tree show that Eve was born in 1757, seventeen years earlier than the above tree.



And lastly, there are trees that has no daughters born to Catherine Bechtel and George Dry, Sr..



These inconsistencies show that research on this family has been very lax and fragmented. It’s very obvious that George Dry, Sr. passed away sometime after 13 November 1804. His exact date of death is still unknown. Research on Eve Dry is also problematic; there are no known reliable source citations for her birth, marriage or death.  

My research is incomplete and at the present time I am not exactly sure how George Dry, Sr. is related.
