Administrative Bond for the Estate of George Dry

George Dry was born 16 Jan 1805 in Kentucky, a son of George Dry and Anna Maria Phifer. He married Rowena last name unknown. To this union were born 9 children; 3 daughters and 6 sons.

His tombstone shows that George Dry died on 10 Feb 1867 at the age of 62. He died intestate and a Bond on his estate was issued on 25 February 1867.

Whereas, James J. Drye & John F. Drye has been appointed, by the County Court of Casey County, Administrators of George Drye deceased, intestate, NOW, we J. J. Drye & J. F. Drye Administrators and W. S. Drye and G. W. Drye sureties, do hereby covenant to and with the Commonwealth of Kentucky, that the said James J. Drye & John F. Drye  will, well and truly adminster the goods, chattels, credits and effects of the said intestate, according to law, and will further make a just and true account of all their actings and doings therein; and will, well and truly make a proper distribution of any surplus money, effects, and rents, which may come to their hands, or to any one for them by color of their office, to the persons entitled thereto. If it shall hereafter appear that a last WILL and TESTAMENT was made by the deceased, and the same be proved and recorded, we further covenant that the said J. J. Drye & J. F. Drye will, in such case, surrender their letters of administration; and that they will account with, and pay and deliver over to the Execut___ or Administrat__ with the WILL annexed, the assets in their hands unadministrated.

1769 Deed Rowan County~George Dry to Conrad Grubb

In this deed George Dry (Cordwainer or Shoemaker) is bartering with Conrad Grubb and clearing up a debt that existed between the two men.

Transcription:

Know all men by these presents that George Dry of County of Rowan + province of North Carolina (Cordwainer) for + in consideration of the Sum of Twenty Two pounds Ten Shillings of Lawful money of Great Britain to me in hand paid by Conrad Grub of the County of Rowan and province afs’d on or before the Execution of thefs presents the Receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged Have Bargain Sold delivered and by these presents DO Bargain Sell + Deliver unto the said Conrad Grub one Certain Sorrel natural paceing Mare now in the custody and pofsefsion of the said Conrad, Branded upon the near Buttock or thigh thus  V F . Together with her young Colt and Trotter, Fourteen Woollen Hatts New. Also one fine Furr Hatt, Together with what Debts are which are due to me + charged in a Small paper book unbound, containing a memorandum of those who are indebted to me for work Done a my Trade and other work + Labour – and now afsigned by me to him  the Sd. I believe this to be Johan George Dry husband of Catherine Bechtell; father of Jacob, George Jr. and Eve.

The signature of Johan Gorge Dry on page 118 of this land deed is interesting.

Today’s subject is a Deed of Gift from George Dry, Sr. of Kentucky to his Daughter Eve Dry of North Carolina.

Know all men by these presents that I, George Dry, Senior of Lincoln County, State of Kentucky, in consideration of the natural love + affection which I have + bare unto my beloved daughter Eve Dry in the County of Cabarrus + State of North Carolina + also for divers causes + consideration Me the said George Dry, Sen. have unto moving have given Granted Bargained + Confirmed + by these presents do give grant Bargain + Confirm unto the said Eve Dry all + singular My land, goods, Chattel, personal Estate whatsoever in whose hands or possession it May be in within the State of North Carolina to have + to enjoy all + singular the Said Lands goods + chattel + personal Estate aforesaid unto Eve Dry her heirs and assigns forever to her own proper use +behalf  and I the Sd. The Deed above states that Eve Dry is the Daughter of George Dry, Sr and his wife Catherine.
I, George Dry, Senior of Lincoln County, State of Kentucky, in consideration of the natural love + affection which I have + bare unto my beloved daughter Eve Dry in the County of Cabarrus + State of North Carolina
and
that the Lands goods + Chattels which Catherine Dry my wife had in Pofsefsion in the State of N. Carolina at her death

The Deed shows that George Dry, Sr. lived in Lincoln County, Kentucky and  was alive and well on the 13th day of November 1804 when he signed this deed giving his land in Cabarrus County, NC to his Daughter Eve Dry a Deed of Gift.

Yet, there is much conflicting information about these two in on-line trees.

For instance in this tree we can see that George died 9 years before he signed the above deed.



A Kentucky Tax list shows that George Dry, Sr. was alive and well in 1800.



The above tree also shows that Eve was born in 1774 when her mother was 54 years old.

Another tree show that Eve was born in 1757, seventeen years earlier than the above tree.



And lastly, there are trees that has no daughters born to Catherine Bechtel and George Dry, Sr..



These inconsistencies show that research on this family has been very lax and fragmented. It’s very obvious that George Dry, Sr. passed away sometime after 13 November 1804. His exact date of death is still unknown. Research on Eve Dry is also problematic; there are no known reliable source citations for her birth, marriage or death.  

My research is incomplete and at the present time I am not exactly sure how George Dry, Sr. is related.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Power of Attorney, George & Polly Dry

Stanly County} Know all men by these presents that we George Dry and Polly Dry have hereby appointed Preston W. Wooly our agent and attorney in fact, in our name to draw the amount of money due us arising from the sale of the lands of Christopher Sides sold by the clerk and master in Equity for Stanly county and now in the names of John H. Treadwell the present Clerk and Master for said county and the money so drawn and received to pay over to the undersigned and to sign and deliver for us a full and ample receipt as though we were present at the acting and doing thereof we hereby satisfying and confirming all the Acts and deeds of our said attorney lawfully done in the premises Given under our hands and seals this November 1849.                 George Dry {s}

This power of attorney is very interesting to me primarily because it proves that Polly Sides Dry was alive on 20 November 1849. I have looked extensively for Polly Sides death date. Most on line trees shows that she died before 1850 or in 1850 with no specific date or information.
 
A check of the 1850 Mortality Census shows no listing for Polly Sides Dry.  Polly or Mary is enumerated in the 1860 census for Stanly County and it’s quite possible she is enumerated in the 1870 census. Regardless, it’s obvious she didn’t die in 1850 or before.
This Power of Attorney also names her father, Christopher Sides and her as the wife of George Dry.
