Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #612~James [Ellis] Eddins, Sr.

This is a new series of posting, appearing every Sunday, on selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resources if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

James Ellis Eddins, Sr..¹
This estate folder begins at image #1189 and ends with image #1197. (images 1189-1197)

The Estate folder for James Ellis Eddins contains 8 images; two of which are his Last Will and Testament (1196-1197).  I have written about James Ellis in the past and those articles can be read here:

James Ellis Eddins, died on 26 May 1894 leaving surviving him his children by his three wives and a 4th wife Christian whom he left nothing. He named R. C. Goodwin as his executor and Guardian of his minor children. R. C. Goodwin refused to qualify and his son-in-law Daniel Graham applied for and was named as administrator of his estate.

County of Chesterfield}
I. The petition of Daniel Graham shows to this Court that James Eddins late of the above state and County departed this life on May 26^th 1894 leaving a Will and R. C. Goodwin as named Executor but he refuses to qualify.
II. That he left a small personal estate amounting to Twenty Dollars.
III. That your petitioner is the son-in-law of the said James Eddins and that no one has applied for letters of Administration and your petitioner ask that the Court to appoint him and he will ever pray &c.

The Wives of James Ellis Eddins, Sr.

James Ellis Eddins, Sr. was born about 1828 to John Eddins and his wife Wincy [LNU]. He had three known sibling, all sisters; Elizabeth Ann and Gilli/Gilly. 

Diana ‘Ann’ Boan/Bone
James Ellis first married Diana ‘Ann’ Boan/Bone about 1847. To this union was born five Children:

• Laura, daughter, b. abt 1848
• John, Son, b. 21 May 1851
• William, Son, b. 17 May 1853
• Frank, Son, b. 24 April 1855
• Mary Ann, daughter, b. 12 April 1857

Diana Boan Eddins died  27 September 1868 leaving James with 5 children between the age of 11 and 20 years. 

Marie Marshall Goodwin
On 5 November 1868, James Ellis married Marie Marshall Goodwin daughter of James T. Goodwin and Sarah Ann Woodward. ¹

MARRIAGE: November 5th, 1868, At the residence of the Bride's Mother James EDDINGS to Maria M. , daughter of Mrs. Sarah Goodwyn. "St. David's Parish, South Carolina, Minutes of the Vestry 1768-1832, Parish Register 1819-1924, Brent H. Holcomb, C.A.L.S., 1979, Southern Historical Press, Greenville, SC, Page 108".

James and Marie had two children.

• Henry, Son, b. abt Jul 1870
• Winnie, daughter, b. abt 1872

Marie Marshall Goodwin Eddins died about 1877 also leaving James with two small children. 

Emily Moore
James Ellis them married Emily Moore  about 1877. To this union were borne five children:

• James Ellis, Jr., Son,  b. 16 Feb. 1878
• Hattie, Daughter, b. abt Mar 1880
• Carrie, daughter, b. abt 1881
• Emma Mae, Daughter, born abt 1882
• Alice, Daughter, b. unknown

No data has been found to indicate when Emily passed away but it was most likely during the birth of daughter Alice probably sometime around 1884.
We know from James Ellis Will written on 22 April 1894 just weeks before he died on 26 May 1894 that he had married once more after the death of Emily. ²

“My Wife Christian [LNU]”
James closed his will by saying:
“It is also my Will and my Wish that my Wife Christian Receive no part or Share of my Estate and Lastly, I nominate and appoint” ³

James Ellis passed away on 26 May 1894 at the age of 66 leaving behind 10 children by three of his four wives to mourn their loss. He is buried in Old St. David’s Church Cemetery in Cheraw, South Carolina.

Surname Saturday~ Boan-Bone

Mary Boan is my 3rd Great Grandmother (maternal line). She was born about 1815 based on her age reported in the 1850 Census for Chesterfield County. She married Shadrach John or Johns. 


Research for her parents have been exhaustive with no definite proof but has provided some circumstantial evidence.

My first clue comes from two related Land Deeds found in the Register of Deeds for Chesterfield County, South Carolina. These two deeds are:

• James Eddings & Others to W. T. Goodwin – Deed (DB 5:597-598)
• James Eddings & Others to Alice Goodwin – Deed (DB 6:177)

Parties names within these two land deed are:
“Know all men by these presents, that we, SHADRACH JOHNS and MARY JOHNS of the county of Washington and State of Florida, and JAMES EDDINGS, ANN EDDINGS, and REBECCA BONE of the District of Chesterfield, and State of South Carolina, have in consequence of ninety dollars to us in hand the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged paid by ALICE GOODWIN of the District of Chesterfield and State of South Carolina…”

W. T. Goodwin
W. H. Eddings
F. T. Eddins

Two other Census entries further identifies these participants;

1850 CENSUS: Chesterfield District, SC, Roll: M432_851; Image: 221 Page 108B (stamped), Line 13, Dwelling 152; Family 152; Mary BONE, age 65, Female, born in SC; Effa BONE, age 37, Female, born in SC; Allice BONE, age 30, Female, born in SC.

1860  CENSUS: Cheraw PO, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; Series: M653, Roll: 1217, Page: 130, Line 26, Dwelling 513, Family 512; Mary BONE, female, age 68, born in SC; Alex. GOODWIN, age 22, Laborer, born in SC; Alice BONE, female, age 35, born in SC.

These two Census repeats the named of most of the parties named within the two land Deeds mentioned above (DB5;597 and DB 6:177). 

First, there is Mary Boan, age 65 or 68, born about 1785. Some say she is Mary Walton. She is the wife of Archibald Boan, born 1780. 

• Rebecca Boan, b. 1813 (daughter of Archibald & Mary)
• Effy Boan, b. 1814 (daughter of Archibald & Mary)—Wife of William Thomas Goodwin
• Mary Boan, b. 1815 (daughter of Archibald & Mary)—Wife of Shadrach John or Johns
• [Diana] Ann Boan , b. 1818 (daughter of Archibald & Mary)—Wife of James Ellis Eddins or Eddings
• Alice Boan, b. 1820 (daughter of Archibald & Mary)—Wife of Alexander Goodwin
  

The two census entries accounts for the majority of individual named within the land deed and suggests that all the parties are daughters and son-in-law of  Mary [Walton?] Boan, widow of one Archibald Boan, deceased.

Thus, the following analysis provides the basis for further research to prove and discount the parentage of Mary Boan, b. 1815 as the daughter of Archibald Boan and his wife Mary whom some say is Sarah Walton, b. 1785.
