52 Cousins~The Lillie Ross Deese Wright Family

Lillie Ross Deese was my 1st Cousin twice removed. She was borne 11 May 1892, a daughter of Zechariah Taylor Deese and Clara W. Gathings. Lillie Ross was their first borne. The family would continue to grow over the next nine years with the addition of 4 more children giving Lillie two brothers and two sisters. 

Her father Zachariah was a farmer, and they lived in the Morven and Lilesville communities.

Lillie, age 20, married Daniel Robert Wright, Sr. on 21 November 1912 in Anson County, North Carolina. Daniel Robert Wright, Sr. was borne 9 December 1890. His patents are unknown; he is first listed as a 9-year-old Boarder in the N. B. [Nelson B.] Harrington household, Wadesboro, Anson County, NC in 1900. The Richmond County Death Index shows Daniel Robert Wright father’s to be Jim Wright. Lillie Ross and Daniel Robert Wright would raise a family of 9 children with one of those nine dying young at age 1.

Daniel Robert Wright and Lillie Ross Deese had the following children:

i. Georgia Lillie Wright, born 23 Aug 1913, Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina; married Thomas Dargin Gilliam; died 1 Jan 1991, Richmond, North Carolina. 

ii. Lorenia Wright was born on 5 Mar 1915 in Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina. She died on 23 Jan 2000 at the age of 84 in Rockingham, Richmond, North Carolina. 

iii. Heywood Wright was born about Mar 1918 in Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina. He died on 20 Aug 1936 at the age of 18 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina. 

 iv. Ishmel Thomas Wright was born on 1 Feb 1919 in Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina. He died on 28 Dec 2003 at the age of 84 in Richmond County, North Carolina. He served in the military. 

v. Daniel Robert Wright Jr., born 12 Jan 1921, Lilesville, Anson, North Carolinas; married Ella Florence Gilliam; died 7 Feb 1951, Rockingham, Richmond, North Carolina. 

vi. Samuel Jackson Wright was born on 13 Feb 1923 in Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina. He died on 17 Apr 1924 at the age of 1 in Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina. 

vii. Kenneth Mendal Wright was born on 17 Mar 1925 in Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina. He died on 31 Mar 2000 at the age of 75 in Rockingham, Richmond, North Carolina. 

viii. Bernice Vivian Wright, born 9 Sep 1927, Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina; married Walter Benford Garrison; married James Gilliam Jr,; died 5 Jul 2012, Rockingham, Richmond, North Carolina. 

 ix. Betty Jean Wright was born on 16 Sep 1932 in Anson County, North Carolina. She died on 15 May 1993 at the age of 60 in Rockingham, Richmond, North Carolina. 

Daniel Robert Wright Jr. died Apr. 24, 1979 in Rockingham, Richmond County, North Carolina. 

Lillie Ross (Deese) Wright died at the age of 90 on 24 December 1982. 

Mrs. Lillie Ross Wright ROCKINGHAM - Mrs. Lillie Ross Wright, 90, homemaker, died Friday. Funeral is 2 p.m. Sunday at Cordova Baptist Church. Survivors are sons, Ishmal Wright, Kenneth Wright; daughters, Betty Jean Carpenter of Wadesboro, Mrs. Georgia Gilliam, Mrs. Lorenia Richardson, Mrs. Vivian Gilliam; sister, Mrs. Martha Atkinson of Troy. Marks is in charge.

Sale of Estate Lands to Pay Debts

Kelly (aka Cally) Tucker was born about 1814, a son of  Daniel Tucker and his wife. He married Jerusha Gathings, daughter of John P. Gathings, Sr. 

Cally and Jerusha had 6 children; 4 sons and 2 daughters. Their daughters were Judith married A. H. Massey and Susanna married John Paul Rushing. There was no daughter named Rosanna.

Jerusha (Gathings) Tucker died about 1861. Kelly/Cally Tucker died 19 October 1890 at age 76.

Death of a Honorable Man

Samuel Calvin Cook, Sr., age 66, died in his home in Wilcox County, Alabama. Survivors are his wife, Mary Gullette Cook, and 14 children; 6 sons and 8 daughters.

Death of Sam C. Cook.
The sad news reached Camden, that on last Wednesday the 9th inst., the Honorable Samuel C. Cook, died at his home near Dry Forks, after an illness of several weeks. He died of some bladder trouble, which medical skill could not overcome, at the age of 66 years. He was born, at the ancestral home of his deceased father, Mr. Daniel Cook, Sr., in Possum Bend on Nov. 6, 1837, and on last Thursday, a large concourse of his family, his neighboring friends and from Camden and vicinity, buried him in the Cook Ancestral Cemetery near his birth-place.
The subject of this brief memoir, in early life, attended the schools in Wilcox County, and graduated from Howard College with the degree of B. A., in 1859. He read law in 1861 and on March 11, 1861, he married in Mobile Miss Mary Harsell Gullette, daughter of Hon. George S., and Mrs. Gullette of our county, but the tocsin of war, had then sounded, and leaving his bride he hurried to the front, as a member of Co. D. Third Alabama Cavalry, known then, as the Wilcox Dragoons. He was delegated by his company, to receive the beautiful silken flag, presented by Camden ladies to the Troop, just as it was leaving, to defend our Southland. With the Troop, he participated in many important battles, under the command of brave General Hagau, and the fearless Joe Wheeler. Later, he was assigned to General Wheeler's staff, and remained in service until April 29, 1865, and arrived at his home in May, 1865. In early life he joined the Missionary Baptist Church, and was a deacon in that church for many years.
When the Wilcox Mounted Rifles was re-organized about ten years ago, he was again delegated, to present for the Camden ladies, the Silken Banner, to the descendants of the brave men of 1861. For many years, Mr. Cook was a justice of the Peace in Black's Bluff beat, and in 1902, he was nominated by the Wilcox County Democracy, and elected in November of that year, as one of the representatives to the General Assembly. He was also a trustee of the Second District Agricultural School, located at Evergreen, always, ever and to the end, he was a tried and true Democrat; and was held in high regard, by his political associates, who had learned to respect, and honor his good judgment and wise counsel. Mr. Cook was also a large planter and horticulturist; and at his home, hospitality and welcome was ever extended to the many, who became his guests. His faithful wife, and fourteen children survive him. Hon. Daniel Cook is the only living brother.
Mr. Cook was of a reserved disposition; he was gentle; but as firm as a rock, when his conclusions were formed, as to the right course to pursue. He was genial, and the visitor and stranger, always felt, their presence was welcomed, at his house. He was cordial; he was among our best citizens; and his death will be sorrowful news to his home people and his friends in the State. A good man has gone to Heavenly Rest, and his sorrowing family, can console themselves with the reflection, that his good name, is a legacy for them, that will survive the grave. May Sam C. Cook rest in peace, and with a host of friends, The Progressive Era tenders our condolences to the bereaved relatives.

It’s Family Time~James Jackson Patrick & Rose Ann Purvis Family

James Jackson Patrick, born 16 Apr 1816 in Colleton County, South 
Carolina was a son of Luke Patrick and Gracie Heaton.

Rose Ann Purvis born about 1811 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina was the daughter of James Purvis, Sr. and his unknown wife.

The Purvis family migrated from Chesterfield about 1818 and arrived in Mississippi in the early 1820’s. The Patrick Family left Colleton County and arrived in Mississippi between 1830 and 1840. 

James Jackson Patrick and Rose Ann Purvis were married 20 October 1837 in Rankin County, Mississippi. James was a farmer like his father. Rose Ann’s father, James Purvis, Sr and his brother Gilbert Purvis were also farmers.

Before the early death of Rose Ann Purvis, she and her husband James Jackson would raise a family of eight children; five sons and 3 daughters.

The children of James Jackson Patrick and Rose Ann Purvis are:

i. James Monroe Patrick was born on 19 Dec 1840. He died on 8 Apr 1923 at the age of 82 in Montgomery, Alabama.

ii. Rebecca Patrick, born 13 Dec 1839, Rankin, Mississippi; married John Wesley Bowman, abt 1857; married Unknown Walters; married Asberry A. Sevitzer, 3 Aug 1872, Leflore County, Mississippi; married George W. Carr, 30 Oct 1886, Sunflower County, Mississippi; died 1 May 1906.

iii. Mary S. Patrick was born about 1842. She died after 1880 at the age of 38 in Pelahatchie, Rankin, Mississippi.

iv. Preston Patrick was born on 18 Dec 1846 in Rankin County, Mississippi, United States. He died on 3 Feb 1865 at the age of 18 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio.

v. Dolphin Patrick, born 14 Oct 1848; married Ellen Elizabeth  Thorne; died 8 Mar 1892.

vi. Margaret A. Patrick, born 16 Mar 1851; married Joseph Baxter White, 3 Feb 1867; died 13 Jan 1934.

vii. William W. Patrick, born 14 Mar 1852, Rankin County, Mississippi; married Catherine H., abt 1873, Rankin County, Mississippi; died 16 Aug 1924.

viii. Alvin Patrick was born on 11 Jan 1855. He died on 25 Dec 1937 at the age of 82 in Rankin, Mississippi.

The death of his wife Rose Ann in 1862, left James Jackson, a farmer, in dire straits with several children under the age of twenty-one.

James Jackson Patrick married Catharine Summers sometime between 1862 and 1870. No known children were born of this union.

James Jackson Patrick passed away on  20 June 1882. He and his two wives are buried in Antioch Cemetery, Rufus, Rankin County, Mississippi.

Rosa Ann Purvis, based on DNA, is my 1st Cousin 6X Removed. 

Proof Margaret Sellers Died After 1 April 1908

Margaret Sellers was borne 1834, Clarke County, Alabama, a daughter of William Sellers and Martha Martin. She was a granddaughter of Samuel Sellers and Alice Cook and Great granddaughter of Hardy Sellers, Sr.  

She was twice married; her first husband having been killed in the Civil War.  She first married Joshua Herrin on 19 December 1848 in Clarke County, Alabama. After his death, Margaret married Dempsey P. Pace on 20 December 1865.

Margaret and Joshua had three children; with Dempsey she had one child, a daughter, Sophia Pace. 

The exact death date of Margaret (Sellers) Pace is unknown but it is known that she was alive on 1 April 1908 by her signature on this pension receipt.

That he entered the service of the United States under the officers named & served as stated in the following account. That he was drafted a short time before Christmas in the year __ & served as a Private under Captain Morris Murphy [Maurice Murphy] & Maj. Robert Lloyd [sic, Robert Lide], that he does not recollect the Regiment to which he belonged;1 that he was marched to a place called the "Long Bluff” on Pee Dee River [Pedee River] in the State aforesaid from there to Sewee Bay from there to Haderal's Point [sic, Haddrell's Point] & from there to James Island near Charleston from which place he returned home having served in this tour nine weeks. That he was again drafted & marched as a private under Capt. John DeWitt [John Dewitt] & Col. George Hicks to Cheraw in the District & State aforesaid where he remained one month & returned home. That he was again drafted as a private & then on this 8th day of February (year not recollected) he marched under Capt. Ellerbe [sic, Thomas Ellerbee] & Col. George Hicks crossed Black River at Benbows [sic, Benbow's Ferry?] & crossed Santee [River] at Lanud Ferry [sic, Lenud's Ferry] & proceeded to Charleston - that he was in Charleston at the time it was taken by the British under Clinton where he was taken prisoner on the 11th day of May after his March & was discharged on parole on the 19 of the same month having served this tour up to this time he was taken prisoner three months & four days.2 That he served two tours, of two weeks each, as one of a scouting party. That he was again drafted & marched as a private under Capt. William Preswood [sic, William Prestwood] to McCord's Ferry on the Congaree River in the State aforesaid where Col. Washington [William Washington] took command - That he returned home from McCord's Ferry having served this tour one month & remained at home two months. That he was drafted again & served as a private under Capt. Benton & Maj. Tristram Thomas for one month. That he never received a discharge. He hereby relinquishes every claim to a pension or annuity except the present & declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State. PI is the Daughters of American Revolution, PATRIOT INDEX, and AA-6452 is South Carolina Archives; Revolutionary War Audited Accounts.

Enlisted in Marion's Brigade, Benton's Regiment in 1782 at Cheraw (Revolutionary War). Surrender at Charleston and held prisoner for a while. Frederick Rivers Sr. was born near Chesterfield SC and was a farmer. He received grants of land 1784 -1787 for 200, 1000, and 227 acres lying on Abrams Creek. He enlisted (1782) in Cheraw SC in Marion's Brigade, Benton's Regiment. He may have seen action at Black Creek, the ferry on Georgetown/Cheraw Road, and Society Hill. He was held prisoner by the British in Charleston at the end of the war. [History of the Old Cheraws, page 412]

[Note] I need a document proving that Hulda Rivers, b. 13 October 1816 is the daughter of William Rivers and his wife Elizabeth “Betsy” Rivers to get Frederick Rivers accepted as my Revolutionary War Patriot. Any help greatly appreciated.

 Lest We Forget~Lt. Frank David Davis

At the time of his death on March 6, Lieut. Davis was piloting a dive bomber (A-26) and was returning to his base after an all day mission. Between Rome and Naples he was apparently blinded by a fog and rain and upon attempting to bail out of plane he was too near the earth, his parachute failed to open, thereby causing him to crash on a mountain side, where he was later found dead by his wing man.  [Our Southern Home, Livingston, Alabama; 30 Mar 1944, Thu. Page 1, column 8]            

I'm not exactly sure where Lt. Frank D. Davis is buried but there are two FindAGrave memorials created for him. On is in the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial.

The Wife of James Purvis, Sr. is not Sarah Garrard James

Sarah Garrard James Does not Exist but there is a Sarah Garrard that married James Purvis thus becoming Sarah Garrard Purvis.

This marriage took place in Fleming County, Kentucky on 31 March 1808.

Today there are hundreds of on-line trees showing Sarah Garrard James married to James  Purvis of Chesterfield, South Carolina. 

The Wife of James  Purvis, born 1760 in Chesterfield, SC; died abt Nov 1836 in Mississippi is Unknown.

There is a lot of misinformation on the Wife of James Purvis, Sr. Most of this is caused by sloppy research and posting of misinformation on-line.
There is a Kentucky marriage licensee for a James Purvis to a Sarah Garrard.

James Purvis, Sr. b. abt 1760 DID NOT marry Sarah Garrard James

The KY Marriage Licensee shows A SARAH GARRARD marrying a JAMES PURVIS; but he was not the James Purvis, Sr. that migrated from Chesterfield County, SC to Clarke County, Alabama and then on to Rankin County, MS where he died in November 1836. [Probate File; Probate Court, Rankin County, MS and RANKIN COUNTY, MS BOND AND WILL BOOK I, Page 52: Estate of James Purvis, dec'd. John Purvis, W. Purvis, W.B. Word, Charles A. Fulsom, bond $1,400.00.28 Nov. 1836. Condition: John Purvis and George W. Purvis, Admr's. make an inventory of estate].

James Purvis, born about 1760 in SC and Died in November 1836 was the son of John Purvis and Sarah Johnston/Johnson. THE NAME OF HIS WIFE IS NOT KNOWN. His brother was Gilbert Purvis who married Effica Howell. James, Gilbert and several other Purvis families migrated from Chesterfield, SC about 1818. They are not listed in the 1820 Census for Chesterfield County, SC. James and his family are listed in 1800 and 1810 and I can assure you he was married long before the 1808 Kentucky Marriage.

Based on these two censuses we can see that James was married and had 6 children prior to 1800 and statistics points to a likely marriage date of about 1788-89. This is based on the assumption that the oldest female in the household is James Purvis wife.

Again we know that James is in SC and that he is married much earlier that 1808 and has a growing family in both 1800 and 1810. There is no record of James Purvis leaving South Carolina until he migrated with his brother about 1818-1820

Just a short look on the Internet shows that Sarah Garrard married James Purvis on March 31, 1808 in Fleming county, Kentucky, son of William Purvis and Jane Burk. These Purvis were from Culpepper County, Virginia.

And I have no idea how SARAH GARRARD became SARAH GARRARD JAMES. I would suggest contacting one of the individuals posting this information. There are at least 7 public trees out there with this wrong information. [End of GenForum Post]. 

These 7 trees in 2011 have now morphed into hundreds. For the life of me I don't understand placing such misinformation in a personal tree. If you are not going to abide by the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS) when creating and maintaining a tree; why do it at all? Your time could be better used doing something for your community. 

If your line is William Purvis and Jane Burk of Virginia then James Purvis and Sarah Garrard belongs in your tree.

If your line is James Purvis, b. 1760 Chesterfield County South Carolina; parents John Purvis and Sarah Johnston then  please remove Sarah Garrard as the wife of James; his wife is unknown. If you have PROOF otherwise, I’m all ears. Send me an email.

Last Will and Testament of John Laton, Sr.

John Laton, Sr., was born abt 1777 in Anson County, North Carolina; parents unknown. (Some say he was born in Virginia). He was twice married. After his first wife passed away leaving him with six children John then married Catherine Dry on 10 June 1824. To this union were borne an additional five children.

John Laton died in July 1852 leaving the below Last Will and Testament. His will was probated during the August Session 1852.

I have provided a link to this will in the footnotes at the bottom of this post; therefore, in the interest of saving loading time; only one of three pages are contained within this blog post.

            In the name of God Amen. 

I John Laton Senr of the County of Stanly and State of North Carolina doth this the nineteenth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty four make & publish this my last Will & Testament revoking all other wills & codicils by me previously made being in low state of health but of sound mind & memory blessed be God.
First: calling to mind that man has once to die and considering my worldly affairs & wishing to dispose of time as hereinafter mentioned; first that my body be buried in a Christian like manner.
Secondly: That all my just debts be paid out of my estate by my Executors. 
Third: I lend unto my beloved wife Katharine the plantation on which I now live containing five hundred acres be the same more or lefs on the waters of Clover Fork Creek adjoining the lands [of] Breedy Carter & Thomas Rice & Timothy Ragsdale & Starling McDaniel & others during her life time or widowhood, and after her death to be divided among the following children; Nancy Bullen, Huldah Saunders, Sarah Bullen, William Laton, John Laton.

Huldah Saunders, Nancy Bullen, Sarah Bullen & William Laton & John Laton they shall pay over to Elizabeth Rice & to David Laton the sum of fifteen dollars to the said David Laton & to Elizabeth Rice to make them equal.
Fourth: I give and bequeath unto my five children not before mentioned all my lands lying on the  waters of Jacobs Creek & Camp branch containing five hundred acres more or less to be equally divided amongst them to, viz. Martin, Franklin, Lydia, Katharine & James Adam.
Fifth: My will & desire is that the property of every description remaining on the plantation where I now live after my wife's death shall be sold at public sale and equally divided among all my children, Elizabeth Rice and David Laton excepted.
Sixth: I will & bequeath unto my beloved wife Katharine four hundred dollars that I have out at interest and after her death to be equally divided amongst her children, to viz: Martin, Franklin, Lydia, Katharine and James Adam, all the rest of my children excepted, viz. Elizabeth Rice, Nancy Bullen, William Laton, Huldah Saunders, John Laton, Sally Bullen, and David Laton.

The Perils of a Pandemic

One hundred and two years ago, our ancestors were dealing with a pandemic much like what we are experiencing today.

It interesting when you view the headlines from that time period. All of you will be able to relate to this headline from “The Sacramento Star (Sacramento, California) · 9 Nov 1918, Sat · Page 4."

Now, I don’t know if China did it then or if China did it today but this reflects significantly on our thought process both today and in nineteen eighteen. 

I do know that families were devastated back in 1918 just as they are today with this Covid-19 pandemic that we are experiencing. The Family of James Eagle Huneycutt, Sr., and his wife Annie Valette Beattie is one of many families that experience tragedy during the epidemic.

Former Alderman James Huneycutt and his wife Annie lost their eldest son on 25 October 1918. James Leonard, age 19, was a military student who contacted pneumonia followed by Influenza.

“James Leonard Huneycutt, eldest son of former Alderman James E Huneycutt and Mrs. Huneycutt,  and one of the popular young men in the city, died yesterday afternoon at 4:45 o'clock at the home of his parents on North McDowell street of pneumonia, following Influenza. Mr. Huneycutt was taken ill October 16. Each day his condition grew worse and for three or four days it was realized he could not recover...” ¹

James Leonard Huneycutt was born on 3 October 1899 and died 25 October 1918. He lived his entire short life in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was the oldest of 9 children. He is survived by his siblings; 3 sisters, Misses Margie Valette, Bonnie Kay, Dorothy May Huneycutt, and five brothers, Charles Herbert, Teddy Rufus, James Eagle Jr., William and Wesley Clay Huneycutt.

James Leonard Huneycutt is my 3rd Cousin once removed.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Callie Hunter Brock Death Date Found

For many years I had a note in my genealogy database that Callie Hunter, the first wife of Pleasant Archie Brock, Sr. had died about 1923. This was not a correct date.

I knew that Pleasant Archie had married Callie on 23 February 1913 and to this union, one child, a son was born. Pleasant Archie then married second, Hannah Mae Deese, on 1 April 1923. So Callie Hunter Brock passed away sometime between the birth of her son on 20 April 1914 and the second marriage of Pleasant Archie on 1 April 1923. 

This week while browsing through newspapers on Newspapers.com I came across a DEATH NOTICE for a Mrs. Pleas Brock. I knew she was related;  but, I had to sort out which Mrs. Pleas Brock she was? Research of my Brock lineage had found five Pleas. Brock born between 1839 and 1923.

Mrs. Pleas. Brock who recently moved to Lancaster, died there last Wednesday, and the body was brought back and buried at White Plains Thursday afternoon. She was about 24 years old and is survived by her husband and one child.

I next searched the South Carolina Death Certificates for a female BROCK that had passed away in January 1923 plus or minus 5 years and found – Milly Catherine Brock, died 28 January 1928.

While the death notice is dated 6 Feb 1918 and says she died the previous Wednesday [30 Jan 1918]; we know from her death certificate that she died on 28 January 1918.  

The SC Death Certificate contained a plethora of information.

To Milton McLaurin Judge of Probate for Marlboro County in the State aforesaid:
The petition of Atlanta J. Weatherly as Guardian for Rachel Rivers and Columbus L. Rivers, respectfully shows to this Court:
I.    That the petitioner is the duly qualified guardian of the above mentioned. minors.
II.    That there is now in the hands of said petitioner the sum of Two hundred Eleven & 65/100 Dollars belonging to Rachel  Rivers and Columbus L. Rivers respectively. As shown by last returns filed.
III.    That during the last four years your petitioner has been forced to spend more or less money on the said minors for the proper food, clothing, physicians accounts etc., and that she finds it necessary now to carry one of the minors to the hospital for treatment.
WHEREFORE, Your petitioner prays that an order be passed by this Court permitting and directing your petitioner as guardian of Rachel Rivers and Columbus L. Rivers to use the sum Two hundred Eleven & 65/100 Dollars, to pay the above expenses, and she will ever pray.

Atlanta J. “Addie” Smith, daughter of William Angus Smith and his wife Julie (Last name unknown) married Columbus Lafayette Rivers, Sr. on 26 December 1902 in Bennettsville, South Carolina. They had two children before he was killed by his brother-in-law on 18 February 1911. His son having just arrived on 8 January 1911 or about  40 days earlier.
With two small children Addie Smith Rivers married Alton John Weatherly about 1914.  Three daughters were borne to this union. 

Rachel and Columbus L. Rivers are my 2nd Cousins 3 times removed.

Ollie Washington Deese was the 7th child of Henry Harrison Deese, Sr. and his wife Nellie Isabella Huneycutt.

He married Carrie Burnette on 16 January 1915 in Stanly County, North Carolina. By 1940, he was divorced and living with his brother Martin Lester Deese and his wife Vertie. I have found no children born to this union.

Ollie spent his life as a General Contractor and Painter.

Ollie Washington Deese died on 13 January 1960 and was buried in the Morven cemetery with his parents and sibling. Sadly, his death date has not been added to his tombstone.

 

Ollie Washington Deese is my 1st Cousin twice removed.

Carolina and county of Montgomery of the one part and Dempsey Honeycutte Senr of the same county + State aforesaid of the other part   Witnefseth that for + in consideration of the sum of fifty dollars to him in hand paid before the signing sealing of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby fully acknowledged by him the said William Wood hath given granted bargained + sold + by these presents doth give grant bargain + sell unto the said Dempsey Huneycutt his heirs and assigns forever all that piece parcel plantation or tract of land + improvement situated in Montgomery on the East prong of Island creek joining John Peeks South east line Beginning at a stake at the Allenton road leading to Charlotte on John Peeks line running with his line north west 175 poles to a stake thence a south East course 180 poles to a stake thence south 175 poles to a stake on the south side of the Allenton road thence a west course 175 poles to a stake thence 50 poles to the beginning containing 200 acres more or lefs also with all ways waters watercourses and every appurtenances thereunto belonging to have and to hold the said land and tenements unto him the said Dempsey Huneycutt his heirs  exrs  + adms + afsigns forever to the only proper use + behoof of him the said Dempsey Huneycutt and the sd William Wood for himself and each of his heirs do forever warrant and defend the right + title of said land clear + free from him the said William Wood his heirs and afsigns unto Dempsey Huneycutt his heirs + afsigns forever where unto I the said William Wood  hath hereunto set his hand and affixed my seal  the day + year first above written.

Dempsey Huneycutt Sr died sometime after 23 September 1849 and when the 1850 Census was enumerated. He should be listed in the 1850 Mortality schedule but he is not. The below document is the last document I have found that names Dempsey Huneycutt before his death.

On page 66 – Commencing on Saturday before the 4th Lord’s Day in [23] September 1849 The Meadow Creek association met with Elder G. Little delivering a sermon from Titus 2nd Chapter 14th verse. On the next page (67) present at this meeting was Hezekiah Hearne, D. Little and Demcy Hunnicut representatives from the Meadow Creek Church.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Bond for Marriage Licensee~John Hunnicutt, Sr. to Lucy Thornton

This past week I have spent quite some time on Hunnicutt, Huneycutt and Honeycutt research. The Huneycutt's are part of my paternal line and beginning with my Great Grandmother Louvena Huneycutt Deese (Oct 1855 – Oct 1889). The first Hunnicutt arrived in Virginia in 1635.

William HUNCOTE was born in 1600 in England. He emigrated on 24 Jul 1635 from London, England. He died in Surrey County, VA. He was English. On July 24, 1635, William Huncote, age 35, set sail on the ship "Assurance" from the port of London, England to Virginia. ¹


Transcription:
Know all men by these presents that we John Hunnicutt senior and John Bartle are held an\d firmly bound unto his Excellency James Barbour Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia + to his Sucefsors for the use of the Commonwealth in the penal sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to be paid to the said James Barbour Esquire Governor as aforesaid, + to his Sucefsors to which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves our heirs, executors + administrators firmly by these presents—Sealed with our seals + dated this third day of December 1814---
THE CONDITION of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a Marriage shortly intended to be solemnized between the above bound Joh Hunnicutt Senr + Lucy Thornton agreeable to be ceremonies of the Church of which they are Members NOW if there be no lawful cause to obstruct the said Marriage then the above obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force + virtue.
