It’s Family Time~Jesse and Ann Freeman

In 1838, Jesse Freeman and Sarah Jane Davis Freeman had their seventh child; a boy, they named Jesse. Over the next 12 years, the family would grow to a total of 11 children. Except for the two oldest Daughters, Elizabeth and  Sarah Ann the entire family is shown here in this 1850 census graphic.

Daughter Elizabeth had married Elisha Poston and daughter Sarah Jane had married John D. Odom and is no longer enumerated with the family.


Their son, Jesse is now 12 years of age. In the 1860 census, we find young Jesse listed as age 20; but if he really was 12 in 1850 we know his real age must be 21 or maybe 22. The census also shows young Jesse at home and still unmarried.

We know that on 12 April 1861 Confederate soldiers bombarded Union soldiers at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. This became the fuse that started the Civil War.


Jesse and Sarah sent all four of their sons off to serve in the War with the 21st SC Infantry losing two to that war. John F. Freeman lost his life on 21 June 1864 and three days later on 24 June 1964, Jesse Freeman was killed-in-action (KIA) at Petersburg, Virginia.

I haven’t found a war record for Jesse but we know that sometime before joining he married a young lady named Ann, born 1845. The death certificate of her son, John Wesley Freeman, states that she was Ann Thurman. The 1870 Census shows Ann Freeman as a Widow with one son, J. A. Freeman. J. A. Freeman is reported as age 8 in the 1870 Census. Based on this it would put the marriage of Jesse and Ann taking place in 1861.


By 1880 Ann Thurman(?) Freeman has remarried to Joseph Hall and had 3 young Hall Children and an additional Freeman son, John Wesley, born in 1873. The age of her other son, Jesse A. Freeman is reported as age 15. This is the same J. A. Freeman that was age 8 in the 1870 Census. 

NOTE. Jesse or J. A. Freeman cannot be found after 1880 but in 1900 Census Jesse C. Freeman was found. There is little doubt that Jesse A. and Jesse Coleman Freeman is the same individual.

The presence of his brother John Westley in the household proved that Jesse C. is the man known as Jesse A. Freeman in previous Censuses.




Between 1880 and 1900, Joseph and Ann Thurman Freeman had additional children,. Joseph has passed away; when and where is unknown and Ann is left a Widow with 8 children. In this Census, Ann tells the Census Taker that she is the Mother of 9 children of which 8 are living. 

A 1910 Census image for Ann Thurman Freeman Hall has not been found.


Annie [Thurman] Freeman Hall died 18 June 1925. In Marlboro County, SC. The 1nformant on her SC Death Certificate was her son, Henry Thomas (Hall) Freeman.


Note: After the 1880 Census, all the male Hall children changed their surname to Freeman and were known by the Freeman surname.

There are many online trees that had the Death date for Annie [LNU] Freeman Hall as the Death date for Jesse and Sarah’s daughter Ann E. Freeman born in Sept. 1850. Listed as age 2/12 in the 1850 Census for Chesterfield County.


Another major note: The surname Thurman is used here to provide clarity in following the theme of this post. Annie, b. 1845 may be a Thurman and she may not be. We have one document that says she was a Thurman and that document is John Westley Freeman Death Certificate (#13168) but on that same death certificate, it states that his father is John W. Freeman. Note also there is NO Ann Thurman in any Chesterfield County household in 1850. 


To summarize: Annie [LNU, maybe Thurman], b. 1845, died 18 June 1925 is the wife of Jesse Freeman, born 1838 and Daughter-in-law of Jesse Freeman born 1804.


Ann E. Freeman, born abt Sept. 1850 is the daughter of Jesse Freeman, b. 1804 and his wife Sarah Jane Davis Freeman and the Sister of the Younger Jesse Freeman. Ann E. is only listed in one census (1850) and believed to have died as a child between Oct 1850 and 1860.


Jesse Freeman, b. 1838 is my 1st Cousin 4 times removed. Jesse Freeman, his father is the husband of my 3rd Great Grand Aunt.

Today’s subject is the Last Will and Testament of Jesse Freeman, 1881.¹

                                    In the name of God Amen.
I, Jesse Freeman of the State of South Carolina in the County of Chesterfield being of sound mind and memory and considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life do therefore make ordain publish and declare this to be my last will and testament. That is to say
First after all my lawful debts are paid and discharged the residue of my estate real and personal I give bequeath and dispose of as follows to wit:
(To my beloved wife one certain bed stead one Bead [Bed] one Pine Table and all the bed clothing she has made since we were married and to have an equal share of all my estate with the rest of my heirs at law. I also give and bequeath unto Sarah Odom the wife of John D. Odom an equal Share of all my Estate both real and personal with the rest of my children. I bequeath and devise that after my decease that all my Estate Real and personal to be sold and the proceeds to be equally divided between my children now living or to their heirs who may be living at the time of my decease to be divided equally between them share and share alike).
This my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former Will by my [me] made. In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal the this <sic> tenth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and Eighty one [1881].

It’s Family Time~Jesse and Ann Freeman

Jesse Freeman, son of Jesse and Sarah Jane Davis Freeman was born in 1838-1840 based on his reported age of 12 (1850) and 20 (1860) in these two censuses.

Shortly after the census was enumerated and maybe before the Civil War, Jesse married a young lady by the given name Ann and to this union was born  a son Jesse A. Freeman in 1862.

I believe that Jesse A. is really Jesse Coleman Freeman (1862-15 May 1951).

At the outbreak of the Civil War it’s almost certain that Jesse Freeman enlisted into one of the local units. Minnie Sanders Rivers in her Rivers History (The Rivers Family: of Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Handwritten. unpublished: n.p., 1929) states that Jesse died about 1863. His absence from the household in 1870 provides indirect evidence that he did not return from the War. Also Ann Freeman re-marriage in 1875 provides additional evidence of his possible demise.

After an exhaustive search no record had been found for Jesse service in the Civil War; but Ann Freeman and her son, Jesse A. Freeman are enumerated in the 1870 Census.

Finding what happen to Jesse during the Civil War has been quite problematic. I found several entries that could possible be our Jesse Freeman.

• Jesse Freeman is not listed in "Broken Fortunes" SC Dead in CSA Service 1861-1865, Randolph W. Kirkland, Jr.

• At https://www.fold3.com/image/20/73570085 there is a listing for a J. FREEMAN from Chesterfield, SC. This J. FREEMAN is in Co. B, 2nd Batt'n South Carolina Sharp Shooters, appointed 2nd  Corporal  30 August 1862. Enlisted  Jan 8, 1862 by Capt. B. T. Davis for 3 years.

• There is a Corporal Jesse FREEMAN in the Company E, 21st South Carolina Infantry, Film Number M381 roll 11 listed in the National Park Service Civil War Solders and Sailors System Database; http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm

• Johnson Hagood does not show Jesse Freeman as a member of Co. E. 21st SCVI in his book "Memoirs if the War of Secession" pages 402 and 403.

Jesse, no doubt died in the Civil war, the question is When, Where and How?

About 1875, Ann Freeman, widow of Jesse Freeman, married Joseph Hall.  Joseph and Ann moved from Chesterfield to Marlboro County.

In July 1881, her ex father-in-law, Jesse Freeman, Sr., passed away. In October 1881 the surviving heirs divided into two groups file a “Bill of Complain” in the Court system against each other.  Ann Hall wife of Joseph hall is named as a Distributee of this estate.

• II. That the said Jessie Freeman left surviving him as his heirs at law and Distributees His Widow Mary Freeman and the following children to wit:
• William Freeman Louis Freeman Christine Turnage the wife of Robert Turnage, Ann Hall the wife of Joseph Hall Elizabeth Poston the wife of Elisha Poston and your Complainants Mary Ann Wadsworth and…

I have not found any documents that show the maiden name (Surname) of Ann Freeman Hall. 

 Ann [LNU] Freeman Hall died 18 June 1925 in Bennettsville, Marlboro County, South Carolina.

Many researches shows this deceased Ann to be Jesse Sr, daughter Ann Elizabeth Freeman; but, that’s impossible. 

Jesse Freeman is my 1st Cousin 4 times removed.

Census Sunday~Jesse Freeman, b. 1838

Jesse Freeman, b. 1838, son of Jesse Freeman and Sarah Jane Davis Freeman appears by name in two censuses; the 1850 and 1860 Censuses for Chesterfield County, South Carolina. You can see him listed below as Jesse, age 20 in his parents household. ^{1 2}



Also in the household is 2 year old Jane Brock, a granddaughter, whose parents are Jane Freeman and Benjamin Brock.³
 
This census was enumerated in August 1860 and we know from history that the Civil war started just a few months later in January 1861.
 
Sometime between August of 1860 and early 1862 Jesse married a young lady name Ann (LNU, Last name unknown ) and was enlisted on Jan 8, 1862 by Capt. B. T. Davis for 3 years of service in the Civil War. ⁴

Minnie Sanders Rivers in a “Family History Booklet” completed in the late 1920 states that:

MILITARY: CSA - Co. E, 21st. Regiment Infantry. Killed in action at Petersburg, Virginia in June 1864. Source of Info.: Rivers Family History by Minnie Sanders Rivers, pg. 12.

I did an extensive search to confirmed this death date and was unsuccessful with the Nation Park Service (NPS)  database, Fold3 and Johnson Hagood’s “Memoirs if the War of Secession. Not to be outdone I finally pulled out my History of the 21st SC Volunteers, by John V. Rigdon and found this: ^{5 6 7 8}
 


So Jesse Freeman died in the Civil War and never came home. After the War, his widow Ann married Joseph HALL. We know this from the 1880 census and from a “Bill of Complaint” filed at the death of Jesse Freeman, Sr. in July 1881.  Item 2, of Jesse’s will from this complaint reads: ^{9 10}

II. That the said Jessie Freeman left Surviving him as his heirs  at law and Distributees His Widow Mary Freeman and the following children to wit:
William Freeman Louis Freeman Christine Turnage the wife of Robert Turnage, Ann Hall the wife of Joseph Hall Elizabeth Poston the wife of Elisha Poston and your Complainants Mary Ann Wadsworth and Effie Purvis and also and <sic> granddaughter named Temple Parr, the wife of Samuel Parr who is a child of a daughter of testor named Jane  which said daughter of testator had been intermarried with one Benjamin Brock and predeceased her said father Jesse Freeman.
 
The Widow, Ann, was next found in the 1870 census where we learned that she and Jesse had a son, Jesse Coleman Freeman, b. 1862.¹¹

But, by 1880, Ann has remarried, taking as her 2nd husband Joseph Hall. ¹²



We see that Ann had two sons prior to her marriage to Joseph Hall and that their first born, Barney, was born in 1876 suggesting that Ann LNU Freeman and Joseph Hall were married in 1875.  

From this union, Ann and Joseph had five additional children; three sons and two daughters. By 1900, Annie is a widower again living with her son Henry in her household and both using the surname – Freeman.¹³ 



Ann LNU Freeman Hall died 19 Jun 1925 in Richmond County, NC. After the death of her 2nd husband Joseph Hall, she reverted to using the Freeman surname. Her death certificate shows her father to be Jesse Freeman; this is an error. The surname and parents of Ann, wife of Lewis Freeman, Jr. and Joseph Hall is unknown.¹⁴
 
Note Jesse Freeman, Sr. had a daughter names Ann E. Freeman. Many a researcher has mixed these two individual up. Ann E. Freeman daughter of Jesse Sr. married Elisha Polson according to Jesse Sr. Will and she went by the name Elizabeth Poston.

Annie (LNU) Freeman Hall is buried in Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Marlboro County, South Carolina.¹⁵

From her blog “The challenge: have one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor. It could be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem — anything that focuses on one ancestor. Not only should this get me blogging more, but also to take a deeper look at some of the people in my family tree.”
 
The focus of today’s blog posting is Sarah Jane Davis Freeman.

Sarah Jane Davis was born about 1804, a daughter of Thomas Davis and Nancy Rivers in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. ^{1 2 3 4 5} She was the eighth born of 11 children; six brothers and 4 sisters. She died after 1870 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
 
Sarah Jane Davis married Jesse Freeman about 1826 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
Jesse Freeman was born also about 1804 in Chesterfield County, SC.⁶ Jesse and Sarah are enumerated in the Chesterfield County census from 1830-1870 and Jesse is listed in the 1880 Census. ^{7 8 9 10}  They lived their entire life in Chesterfield County where they owned and farmed the 200 acres home place. In 1860 they seemed to be quite successful showing real estate valued at $1500 and personal property valued at $1000.00. Jesse and Sarah lost two sons during the Civil War, John F. died on 21 June 1864 and Jesse died on 24 June 1864. 
 
Sarah passed away sometime before the 1880 census enumeration.  No document, obituary or tombstone has been found to narrow the date that Sarah died; only that she died between 1870 and 1880. These seem unusual for a couple doing so good in 1860 unless the ”hard times” of the Reconstruction Era (1865-1876) took their toil on the farm. Jesse is enumerated in the 1880 census and he has a new wife named Mary LNU (Last name unknown). 
 
Jessie died in Jul 1881 at the age of 77.  At his death, two of his daughters along with their husbands file a “Complaint for Relief” against the other named heirs.^{11 12–13-14}
 
The following is item two of that complaint.

II. That the said Jessie Freeman left Surviving him as his heirs at law and Distributees His Widow Mary Freeman, [2nd Wife] and the following children to wit:
William Freeman, Louis Freeman, Christine Turnage the wife of Robert Turnage, Ann Hall the wife of Joseph Hall, Elizabeth Posten the wife of Elisha Poston and your Complainants Mary Ann Wadsworth and Effie Purvis and also and <sic> granddaughter named Temple Parr, the wife of Samuel Parr who is a child of a daughter of testator named Jane which said daughter of testator had been intermarried with one Benjamin Brock and predeceased her said father Jesse Freeman.
 
As indicated in the above complaint Jesse Freeman and Sarah Jane Davis had the following children:
i. Sarah Ann Freeman, born 14 Jul 1827, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married John D. Odom, abt 1856, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; died 21 Jun 1882, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
ii. Mary Ann Freeman, born 2 Oct 1829, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Lewis H. Wadsworth, 28 Dec 1849, Chesterfield County, South Carolina died 5 Feb 1901, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
iii. Lewis L. Freeman, born 27 Feb 1832, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Mary A. Parr, 24 Mar 1853, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; died 20 Jan 1898, Pacolet, Spartanburg, South Carolina.
iv. Jane Freeman, born 1834, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Benjamin Brock, abt 1854, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died bef 1881, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

In the name of God Amen.
I, Jesse Freeman of the State of South Carolina in the County of Chesterfield being of sound mind and memory and considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life do therefore make ordain publish and declare this to be my last will and testament. That is to say
First, after all my lawful debts are paid and discharged the residue of my estate real and personal I give bequeathe <sic> and dispose of as follows to wit:
(To my beloved wife one certain bed stead one Bead one Pine Table and all the bed clothing she has made since we were married and to have an equal share of all my estate with the rest of my heirs at law. I also give and bequeath unto Sarah Odom the wife of John D. Odom an equal Share of all my Estate both real and personal with the rest of my children. I bequeath and devise that after my decease that all my Estate Real and personal to be sold and the proceeds to be equally divided between my children now living or to their heirs who may be living at the time of my decease to be divided equally between them share and share alike).
This last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former Will by my made. In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal the tenth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and Eighty one [1881].

Jesse failed to appoint an administrator for his estate. Letters of Administration cum testamento annexo [1] upon the personal Estate of said testator were issued from the Probate Court of Chesterfield County  to Louis H. Wadsworth and Stephen D. Purvis on 18 September 1883.

Census Sunday~Jesse Freeman, 1850, Chesterfield County, SC

Jesse Freeman and Sarah Jane Davis were married about 1826. Together they had 10 or 11 children; nine children are listed in the 1850 Chesterfield County Census. 

Sarah Jane Davis Freeman is my 3rd great grand aunt. She and her husband Jesse along with the children are listed here in the 1850 Census.¹




The family unit consisted of the following children plus two daughters not shown – Sarah Ann and Mary Ann, both of whom were married in 1850 and out of the household. 



Note: Sarah Ann Freeman, Jesse and Sarah Jane’s daughter married John D. Odom. Her tombstone at Bay Springs Baptist Church Cemetery shows a birth date of 14 July 1827, Thus, the Sarah A. Freeman, age 3, above is most likely a granddaughter of Jesse Freeman, Sr.

It is reported that Jesse Freeman, age 12 above, enlisted into the Civil War and died during the War. As of today, this has not been proven. There are many trees on-line, some with dates for his death. The only problem is that there is NO SOURCE. Some even show that he served in the 21st SCV; again no proof.
Sarah Jane Freeman died sometime after 1870; Jesse Freeman died in July 1881. After, Sarah Jane’s death, Jesse remarried to a Mary LNU. .

When Jesse Freeman died; his daughters Mary Ann Freeman Wadsworth and her husband, Louis H. Wadsworth, Effie Freeman Purvis and her husband, Stephen D. Purvis filed a Bill of Complaint against the surviving heirs. ²

The said Jessie Freeman directed all property to be sold. He failed to appoint an Executor or Executrix. Louis H. Wadsworth and Stephen D. Purvis have been sworn and received their Letters of Administration. The estate, 400 acres of land, was sold and distributed between the heirs.

Surname Saturday~Brock-Freeman Mystery

Benjamin Brock and Jane Freeman are the greatest mystery I have discovered in my research.

Benjamin was born about 1834 to Benjamin Brock and his wife Temperance. Jane was born  about 1934 to Jesse Freeman and his wife Sarah Jane Davis. Both Benjamin and Jane are distant cousins; one on my paternal lines and the other on my maternal lines.^{1 2} 

Benjamin Brock and Jane Freeman were married about 1854 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
This marriage year (1854) is based on the birth of their son James who passed away on 8 September 1858 and was buried at St. David's Church Cemetery. ³

Died: September 8, 1856, at the residents of the Parents in Cheraw, & in the Yard at St. David's Church, James [BROCK], infant son of Benjamin & Jane BROCK, aged 1 year. "St. David's Parish, South Carolina Minutes of the Vestry 1768-1832, Parish Register 1819-1924" by Brent H. Holcomb, 1991. Page 120.

This entry also provides circumstantial evidence of the marriage of Benjamin and Jane Freeman Brock.
Benjamin is enumerated with his parents in 1850 and Jane was found in her Father household in the 1850 Census; both are single. Beyond that they have not been found in any census after 1850. Two additional documents have been found that mention Benjamin Brock. Also in 1860, we find a Jane Brock, age 4 listed in the household of Jesse Freeman.⁴

At this point we can say that the family composition is:
Benjamin Brock, Male, b. 1834 in SC [Head/Husband/Father]
Jane Freeman Brock, Female, b. 1834 in SC [Wife/Mother]
James Brock, Male, age 1, b. 1855, d. 8 September 1856 in SC [Son]
Jane Brock, Female, age 4, b. 1856 in SC [Daughter]

In February 1860, these two articles appeared in the local newspaper for Wadesboro, Anson County, North Carolina and was republished in the Darlington Flag, Vol. XV, No. 3 (Summer 2003). Wadesboro is approximately 20 miles north of the town of Chesterfield, South Carolina.⁵

MURDER - On Sunday morning last, the body of a free colored man, named Michael Knight, was found near Sandy Plains Church, in this county, under circumstances that lead to believe that he had been foully dealt with. He was entirely nude, excepting socks upon his feet and his body was horribly mangled, having been badly beaten with a stick and his neck dislocated. Coroner A. Niven held an inquest on Monday before whom evidence was brought to light pointing to two white men as the perpetrators of the deed. The evidence however is wholly circumstantial. We suppress the names of the accused for the present understanding warrants are in the hands of the proper officers for their arrest. So far as we understand there are no extenuating circumstances for the perpetration of this horrible deed...

THE MURDERS OF KNIGHT- So far as can we learn, the murders of Knight, are still at large. The probability is they have left the State. The two men charged with the crime, Robert Lewis and Ben Brock, are somewhat noted characters. The former it will be recollected was tried in Chesterfield District, South Carolina, last summer for homicide - it was said for causing the death of a man in Cheraw by striking him on the head with a bottle and the latter it is understood is a refugee from the State of Mississippi for causing or very near causing the death of a man by cutting him with a knife. It is presumed if the parties have left the State, the State authorities will take early and energetic measures to have them arrested and brought to justice. The majesty of the laws must be maintained and their strong arm should be felt no matter where the perpetrator of crime should seek to hide himself. We understand that parties in South Carolina say that the offer of sufficient reward they will produce one or both of the parties. Probability is they are hiding just over the State line and these parties know where they are hiding...

Now, I have no proof that this is in fact the same Ben Brock that married Jane Freeman and was the son of Benjamin and Temperance Brock. However, I believe enough evidence exists to warrant additional research.

Then in July 1881, Jesse Freeman, father of Jane Freeman and grandfather of the Brock children died. In September 1885, two of the heirs to Jesse Freeman brought suit against the remaining heirs.⁶

Named within that suit was a young lady, called Temple PAR/PARR.

In another paragraph within the suit we find this statement: “One granddaughter named Temple Par, daughter of Jane Freeman who married Benjamin Brock, predeceased her said father, Jesse Freeman”⁷

In this one statement we know that:

• Jane Freeman married Ben Brock
• Jane Freeman is deceased (No known date)
• That Temple Par is Jesse Freeman Granddaughter
• That Temple Par is the daughter of Jane Freeman who married Ben Brock.

So now the family has grown and the family composition is composed of:

A search on Ancestry for Temple Par did not reveal any data; but,  another search using PARR did turn up several documents.⁸

The South Carolina Death Certificate (#027309) Tempy A. Parr shows that she was born 10 August 1858 and died 20 November 1918 in Columbia, South Carolina. Her obituary in the local news on 21 Nov. 1918 states that “Mrs. Temple Parr, wife of Samuel Parr... and she died at home”.^{9 10}

 The family is now complete based on current evidence and consists of:

Benjamin Brock, Male, b. 1834 in SC [Head/Husband/Father]
Jane Freeman Brock, Female, b. 1834 in SC [Wife/Mother]
James Brock, Male, age 1, b. 1855, d. 8 September 1856 in SC [Son]
Jane Brock, Female, age 4, b. 1856 in SC [Daughter]
Temple Brock Parr, female, b. 10 August 1858; d. 20 November 1918[Daughter]

While we were able to identify and re-build this family, many unanswered questions remains.

1. When did Jane Freeman Brock die?
2. What happen to Benjamin Brock?
3. When died their daughter Jane Brock pass away?

 
The absence of Jane, b. 1834, from the 1860 Census suggests that she most likely died as the results of childbirth after the birth of her daughter Temple in August 1858.  That left Jane and Tempie to be cared for; Jane is with her grandfather in 1860; where is Tempie in 1860?

Tempie Brock Parr and her husband, Samuel M. Parr had 6 children:

1. Benjamin Franklin Parr, born abt 1884, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Nettie Hall, Jul 1914; died 24 Mar 1926, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. 
2. James Melton Parr, born 13 Sep 1885, Hartsville, Darlington, South Carolina; married Eunice Victoria Steen, 1904; died 24 Nov 1939, Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina.
3. Carrie A. Parr, born 23 Dec 1885, Bishopville, Sumter Co., SC; married Reuben Harvey Easler, 13 May 1906; died 24 Feb 1970, Columbia, Richland, South Carolina.
4. Luetta E. Parr was born in Jun 1888 in Bishopville, Sumter Co., SC. ¹⁰  
5. Arrie Lee Parr was born in Sep 1892 in Bishopville, Sumter Co., SC. ^11 12
6. Mary Parr was born in Sep 1892.
