The Last Will of Catherine (David) Lewis

In the Name of God Amen the Eight day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand Seven Hundred & forty-six. Catherine Lewis of Mill Creek Hundred in Newcastle County (word illegible?) Delaware, Widow, being very Sick and Weak in body, but of perfect Mind and memory thanks be to God, therefore, calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make & ordain this my last Will & Teftament, that is to Say Principally and first of all I give and Recommend my Soul into the hands of God who gave it and for my body I recommend it to the earth to be Buried in a Christian Like and Decent manner, at the Discretion of my Executors, nothing doubting but at general Resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Mighty Power of God; and as touching such worldly Eftate~~ wherewith it hath Pleased God to blefs me in this Life I give Devise and Dispofs of the same in the following manner and form &c. Imprimis it is my Will and I do order that in the first Place all my just debts and funeral charges be paid and satisfied: ~~~


Items. I give and bequeath to the Reverend Owen Thomas the Sum of two pounds; I likewise give & Bequeath to the Rev^d David Davice the Sum of two Pounds; I likewise give & Bequeath to Phillip Thomas the sum of five shillings, ~~
Item. I give and Bequeath unto Such of the children of Phillip utterly disallow, Revoke and Disanul all former and other Wills heretofore by me Made, and do confirm this to be my last Will and testament Thomas (being begot of and on the Body of Sarah Thomas) as she the said~~ Sarah Thomas shall think fit, all and Singular the Lands, Messuage and Tenements to him or them and to his, her or their Heirs and afsigns for ever:----
Item I do likewise Constitute, Make and ordain my Trusty and well-beloved friend Sarah Thomas abovesaid to be my Sole Executrix of this my last Will and Teftament; and I utterly Disallow, Revoke and Disanul all former and other Wills heretofore by me made, and do confirm this to be my last Will and Teftament and no others. Catherine David, b. 18 Oct 1688 was the firstborn daughter of Morgan David and his 2nd wife Catherine Howell.

She married Griffith Lewis, date unknown. No children have been identified borne of this union.  

Catherine wrote her Will the 8th of May 1746. The Will was probated on 1 April 1747. Catherine died sometime between these two dates. No record of her death has yet been found.  

Catherine (David) Lewis is my 6th Great Grand Aunt.

Documenting the Birth of Children to Morgan and Catherine David

Morgan David, born about 1622 in Glamorgan Wales immigrated to America arriving on the ship “Vine’ in 1684. Arriving with Morgan was his 2nd Wife Catherine Howell whom he married about 1680 and his firstborn child, John David, born about 1681.

Morgan and Catherine would have 5 children; their last 4 were born in America,  I have a birth announcement for 3 of the 4 children born in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Their firstborn in America was a son, Evan, b. 1685/86 in Merion, Montgomery, Pennsylvania. I have not found a birth announcement for Evan. So if you are reading this and have a birth announcement please contact me.

The other 3 children have their births recorded in the local Quaker records for Pencader Hundred, New Castle County, Maryland.

The 3rd child, a daughter named Catherine was born on 18 October 1688.

Birth of Children~Morgan David and Catherin Howell

Morgan David and Catherin Howell are my Seventh Paternal Great Grand Parents.
In July 1684, the ship “Vine” arrived  from Liverpool with passengers bound for the Welsh Tract. Many believe that Morgan and Catherin David arrived on this ship. A manifest on-line DOES NOT show them as passengers but does show a David David. (Line 10) ¹

Morgan and Catherine David had five children listed in his Will and probated on 18 Sept 1695.
Morgan David dated his will 15. 12 mo. 1694-5. He was buried 17. 12 mo. 1694-5. This will was probated by his widow, Catherine, who was sole executrix, 18. 7 mo. 1695. (Welsh Settlmt Pa., Browning, p. 245; Gen. Soc. Pa., vol. ii, p. 31.) His estate to go to his two eldest sons, John and Evan; he mentions son David, and leaves legacies to daughters Catherine and Elizabeth, and to the Meeting House at Haverford; he mentions property called "Chestnut-well," and "Beech-well." William Howell, Morris Llewellyn, Francis Howell, and David Lawrence are named overseers. Witnesses to this will were Robert Owen, Robert Powell, and John Humphreys. ²


The Five Children named within the Will are:

• John David – eldest son
• Evan David
• David David
• Catherine David
• Elizabeth David

Most researchers of this line believe that John David the eldest son was born in Wales prior to their voyage to America and the 4 remaining children were born in Pennsylvania.

The second oldest was Evan David would thus be their first born child in America. The David family were Quakers and Morgan in his Will left  legacies for “the meeting house at Haverford.”

The minutes of the Haverford Meeting House did contain the birth dates for three of the five children.

There exist FindAGrave memorials for these three children all containing misinformation. The creator failed to take into consideration the differences in Calendars used by the “Quakers”.

In other words, before 1752, 11th month was January; 12th month was February; 1st month was March; 2nd month was April and so on. [This entire statement copied verbatim form Google search]

As stated in the beginning Morgan and Catherin are my Seventh Great Grand Parents.

The five children's are my 6th Great Grand Uncles and Grand Aunts.
