Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #534–Hulda Davis.

On 29 May 1888, William Alfred Davis passed away leaving several “infant” children. One of those children was his daughter, Hulda Davis. 

This folder contain documents that were created by a “Petition for a Guardianship for Hulda Davis”.

Ex Parte Hulda Davis
The petition of Hulda Davis shows to this Court:
1. That she is an heir at law of the late Wm. A. Davis and is an infant over the age of Fourteen years.
2. That the estate of said William A. Davis is in due cause of settlement and petitioner has no guardian to receive and attend to her interest therein of about one hundred dollars.
3. That petitioner is desirous of having a guardian appointed and Jacob Davis is a suitable person to be appointed such therefore petitioner prays that Jacob Davis may be appointed his <sic> [her] guardian for the said State and County and your petitioner ever prays & c.

Nancy J. Hurst, wife of William A. Davis had died earlier in 1888 on February 8 leaving him with 5 children under the age of twenty-one. They ranged in age from 12 to 23 and there were 2 children, age 21 and 23. The death of William thus left those 5 children to be cared for by relatives and their two oldest siblings whom were of age.

William Alfred Davis

William Alfred Davis, b. 11 November 1834, a son of Michael Davis and Hulda Rivers. He was a school teacher and farmer and lived in the Zoar Church section of Chesterfield County.

About 1864, William Alfred married Nancy J. Hurst, age 26, daughter of Isaac Hurst and Henrietta Rivers. Over the next 16 to 17 years they would have 10 children; 6 daughters and 4 sons of which two infant daughters and one infant son would not survive. 
Nancy J. Hurst Davis passed away on 8 February 1888 and William Alfred Davis passed away on 29 May 1888. 

Michael Davis, the son of William Alfred was administrator of the estate.

The undersigned respectively shows to the Court.
1. That William A. Davis late of Chesterfield county died intestate leaving a personal estate worth about five hundred dollars.
2. That said deceased died on the 29th day of May 1888.
3. That Letters of Administration has never been issued to any one and that in order that said estate may be settled according to Law
Your petitioner prays that letters of Administration may be issue to him. Dec. 3rd. 1888.

Today’s subject is the Probate Folder #569, Appointment of Guardians for 4 minor children of William A. Davis. 1
 
In February 1888, Nancy J, Hurst, wife of William Alfred Davis died leaving him with four minor children. Then on 29 May 1888, William Alfred Davis died leaving these minor children without parental care.

Probate Folder #569 assigns guardian for each of these four children – Isaac, Laura Jane, Lessie Ida and James A., Davis.

The petition of Michael Davis shows to this court.
1, That he is administrator of the estate of his father William A. Davis and as such wishes to conclude the business and make a final settlement at an early date
2. That his brother James A. Davis is an infant under the age of fourteen years and is entitled to an interest in the said estate of about one Hundred dollars.
3. That said had no guardian in this state with whom the administrator can settle and from whom he can {illegible} final discharge and petitioner for him and James Ross is a suitable person for such guardian.
Wherefore petitioner prays that James Ross be appointed guardian of said James A. Davis with all the powers and liabilities incident thereto and your petitioner ever prays & etc.

The death if William and Nancy left 4 minor children. The 4 younger children had 2 older sisters and a brother to care for them. By 1897 they all would reach adulthood and be able to care for themselves.

William Alfred Davis was born on 11 Nov 1834 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.1 2 3 William Alfred was a School Teacher. 4 5 6 He died on 29 May 1888 at the age of 53 and was buried at Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.78 910 11 12

His estate was probated in May 1888 and can be found in Estate Folder #73, William A. Davis.13

William Alfred Davis and Nancy J. Hurst were married about 1864 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Nancy J. Hurst, the daughter of Isaac Hurst and Henrietta Rivers, was born on 20 May 1838 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.14 15 16 17 18 She died on 8 Feb 1888 at the age of 49 and was buried on 9 Feb 1888 at Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.19 20 21
