Early “Perkins Men” in Chesterfield County, South Carolina

There is no doubt that John Henry Perkins, Sr., born 1 February 1818 was one of the early Perkins men in Chesterfield County. But, after many years of research his parents have yet to be identified. Many say his parents were James Perkins and Lucy Stanley of Virginia. The problem with this is there is no proof.

Census shows that the first Perkins to moved into Chesterfield County were David and John Perkins and they are the only PERKINS enumerated in the 1800-1810 Census. 

By 1820, the only Perkins enumerated in Chesterfield County is DAVID PERKINS.

Remember above I said “many say his (John Henry, b. 1818) parents are James Perkins and Lucy Stanley of Virginia. This does not seem possible since there was no James Perkins in Chesterfield County between 1800-1830. It appears to me that John Henry Perkins must be either a son of David Perkins or John Perkins.

In  1830, the ONLY Perkins listed is Bilsey Perkins. Bilsey Perkins is the wife of Stringer Perkins, son of David or John Perkins. Bilsey is a misnomer; her real name is Bilzer (Stringer) Perkins.

Search of early newspapers for this county has the following listings:

• 333. Charles Evans, 450 acres of land in Chesterfield County, Cheraw district, bounded by land of David Perkins and others. [City Gazette, March 19, 1800] This may be David Perkins, Jr.

Stinger Perkins Esquire was mentioned several times along with Levi Pate in the Court martial of Brig. General James Blair, 5th Brigade. [City Gazette, Charleston, SC, 20 November 1826]

John Henry Perkins married Nancy Jane Davis, daughter of William Davis and Julia Thurman.
To this union was born 14 children.

Nancy Jane Davis Perkins is my 1st Cousin 4 times removed.

It’s Family Time~Nettie Gertrude Brock

Nettie Gertrude Brock was born on 5 Sep 1890, the first born child of Pleasant Elmore Brock and his wife Nancy Jane Davis.

She never married; spending her lifetime at home with her parents helping and caring as needed.  Her father Pleasant Elmore passed away in October 1926 leaving her Mother, Nancy, a widow. Her Mother, Nancy, passed away in May 1954.

Nettie Gertrude Brock died 27 November 1962 at the age of 72. She was buried with the family in the Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery.

It’s Family Time–The Nancy Jane Davis-David Richard Teal Family

 

Nancy Jane Davis, daughter of John Calvin Davis and Charlotte Hurst was born on 17 Mar 1839 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. ^{1 2}
 
Nancy Jane Davis and David Richard Teal were married about 1866.

David Richard Teal, a son of Benjamin Franklin Teal and Eliza A. Davis, was born on 30 Aug 1843 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. ^{3 4 5}
 
He served in the military Civil War with Company “E’ 21^st SC Infantry, CSA between 1861–1865.⁶
 
Nancy, David and their growing family can be found in the 1870 and 1880 census;  Court House, Chesterfield, South Carolina. David and some of the children are listed in the 1900 Courthouse district. ^{7 8 9}
 
The following children have been identified for David and Nancy Jane: 
i. Margaret Jane Teal was born 18 July 1867 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
ii. Mary Eliza Teal was born about Sept. 1868 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
iii. Ida Teal was born in 1872 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
iv. Theresa Albennie Teal, born 27 Apr 1874, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. 
v. DeRoy Levitt Teal was born in 28 Mar.1876 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
vi. Lula Azalee Teal, born 5 May 1879, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. 

Nancy Jane Davis Teal died in Dec. 5, 1894 according to a Family Bible. ^{10 11}
Nancy Teal's headstone dates are incorrect according to a family Bible owned by her daughter, Marveliza Vermell Teal. According to the dates in the family Bible, Nancy Teal's dates are as follows:
Born: 17 March 1839
Died: 5 December 1894

David Richard Teal died on 16 Nov 1918 at the age of 75 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.¹² David was also buried in the Teal Cemetery beside his wife, on 17 Nov 1918 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.^{13 14 15}

Wednesday’s Child~Infant Son, of Pleas and Nancy J. Brock

Infant Son

b. Feb. 11, 1897

d. Jun. 15, 1897

Pleasant Elmore Brock and Nancy Jane Davis were married in 1888 and their first born, a daughter, arrived in September 1890. When the above son arrived, Pleas and Nancy Brock had two sons and a daughter.

Records for this time period in Chesterfield County are scarce and it is not known why their young son died after a very short life of 4 months and 4 days. 

Three additional children, another daughter and two sons were born to this union.  
The unnamed son above was buried at Zoar United Methodist Church Cemetery.

It’s so sad to lose a child so quickly and so young. I know this was a great loss to my Great Grand Uncle and Aunt.
