Young Civil War Widow Mentioned in Land Deed

Phillip A. Sellers was born abt 1829, a son of Phillip Sellers, Jr. and Mary E. Gulledge. He was their first-born son but the second born child of five children borne to this couple.

On 8 March 1860, Phillip A. Sellers, age 31, married Viny Phillips, age 20, daughter of Capt. John Phillips.

On 12 April 1861 Confederate soldiers bombarded Union soldiers at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. This became the fuse that started the Civil War.

On 25 February 1862, almost 2 years into his marriage, Phillip Sellers enlisted with Company “I”, 43rd Regiment NC Troops to serve in what became the Civil War.

On 9 August 1862, 6 months after leaving his young bride back in South Carolina, Phillip A. Sellers died of Typhoid fever at Petersburg, Virginia. Viny Phillip Sellers, was 22 years old when she lost her husband to the "fever".

I had found no record of Viny Phillips Sellers after the War until this week. This past week the Chesterfield Land Deed web site was down so I spent my time on the Anson County, NC Land Deed website. Among several deeds of interest was this deed from Deed Book 17, page 435.  From this deed, I now know that Viny remarried and her new surname is Gaddy. So far I have been unsuccessful in finding her in the Censuses.

Anson County}  Whereas upon the filing hearing and final decrees in the matter of the Petition of Jno. P. Ratliff Adm of Phillip Sellers filed in the Superior Court of Anson County the 19th day of April 1870 for the sale of the Lands belonging to the Estate of the Said Phillip A. Sellers Dec'd. Subject to the dower of Viney Gaddy widow of the said Phillip A. Sellers to make assets for the payment of debts remaining due and unpaid Against said Estate and wherein the said Court did order the ?? sale of said Land consisting of about ninety acres subject to the dower of said Viney Gaddy widow of said Phillip A. Sellers and whereas the said John P. Ratliff did in obedience to said order advertise said Land according to law and offered the same to the highest bidder on the 15th day of November 1870 & Jno. H. Gaddy became the last & highest bidder for the sum of three hundred & fifty Dollars & subsequently assigned his bid to Jas. T. Moore who paid the purchase money as will appear by the report of the said John P. Ratliff filed in the case.
    This indenture therefore Witnesseth that the said Jno. P. Ratliff Adm. of Phillip A. Sellers dec'd for and in consideration of the sum three hundred and fifty Dollars to him in hand paid by the said James T. Moore the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged and in obedience to the order of the Court in this case hath bargain sold & Conveyed and Confirmed & by these presents doth bargain sell convey & confirm unto the said James T. Moore his heirs & assigns all the right title Interest & Property which the said Phillip A. Sellers had or owned in the said Tract or parcel of Land mentioned in the petition consisting of ninety acres more or lefs adjoining Thos. Gulledge & others subject to the life time Estate or Widow dower in favor of Viney Gaddy widow of the said Phillip A. Sellers  Dec'd.
     In witness, whereof the said John P. Ratliff hath hereunto set his hand & seal this 7th day of January 1871.

It's Family Time~Phillip A. Sellers

Phillip A. Sellers, a son of Phillip Sellers, Jr. and Mary E. ‘Polly’ Gulledge, was born about 1829 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Phillip was the oldest son and had four siblings; two brothers and two sisters.


On 8 March 1860, Phillip A. married Viney Phillips, a daughter of Capt. John Phillips.<sup>1

253. In this county, on the 8th inst., by John P. RATLIFF, Esq., Mr. Phillip SELLERS to Miss Viny PHILLIPS, daughter of Capt. John PHILLIPS. The Argus, March 15th, 1860.
  

Phillip and Viny are enumerated with his mother Mary E. ‘Polly’ Gulledge Sellers in the 1860 census for Anson County, North Carolina.2

After the 1860 census my research turned cold and I could find no additional evidence or information for Phillip and Viney Sellers. That is until last week when I made  a concentrated effort to locate a death date for Joel Sellers, a younger brother of Phillip A. Sellers.

I made a trip to the local library to access the multi-volume “North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865: A Roster” known as the “Bible” for NC Civil War soldiers.  While browsing through these multi-volumes, I realized that Joel and his older brother Phillip A. Sellers both enlisted on 25 February 1862 with Company “I” 43rd Regiment North Carolina Infantry (State Troops).

On the same page in Volume 10, page 379 we have entries for both Joel and Phillip Sellers. 3 4

Born in Chesterfield District, South Carolina and resided in Anson County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Anson County on February 25, 1862. Present or accounted for until discharged on August 14, 1862, by reason of "an excessive and remarkable congenital malformation of the chest." Later served as Private in 1st Company, 36th Regiment N. C. troops (2nd Regiment N.C. Artillery)

Born in Chesterfield District, South Carolina and resided in Anson County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Anson county at age 33, February 25, 1862. Present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Petersburg, Virginia, August 10-12, 1862, of ty[phoid] febris."

It was at this moment that I realized why I could not locate Phillip and Viney after 1860 Census.

Phillip A. Sellers died on 10 August 1862 of typhoid fever. 5</sup>

Phillip A. Sellers is my 2nd Cousin 4 times removed.

October 21^st 1872. Know all men these presents that I Temperance J. Bone of the County and state aforesaid have this day bargained Sold and by there <sic>presents do bargain, sell and convey to Phillip A. Sellers for the Sum of Seventy five dollars my legatee part of land containing two hundred acres of land more or less being a tract of land formally belonging to Sarah Hancock dec'd and Temperance J. Bone, do warrant and defend the title of the said land to Phillip A. Sellers to his and assigns forever from myself my heirs administrators Executors forever. Witness my hand and seal done the day and date above written.

Sunday’s Obituary~P. A. Sellers

Phillip A. Sellers is my 1st cousin 4 times removed. He was born 3 May 1818, a son of Roland Sellers and Margaret Eddins. He married Martha Ann Brooks about 1844.



While out in his field yesterday morning Mr. Phillip A Sellers, of Lilesville township, very suddenly yielded to an attack of heart failure and expired when he fell. Anson County had no more worthy citizen. He was 82 years old and was loved, honored and revered by every one who knew him. His death will be deplored by the entire county. ¹

Phillip A. Sellers and his wife are buried at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery, Cairo, Anson County, North Carolina. ²
