It’s Family Time~James David Sellers

James David Sellers, born about 1822, was the 3rd of 14 children born to Roland Sellers and his wife Margaret Eddins.

About 1845, James David married Sarah Ann Gaskins, age 19, daughter of Darling Monroe Gaskins and Mary Nelson. Over the next 12 years, James David and Sarah Ann would grow their family with the birth of four daughters and a son. By the time their youngest had turned 4; a war was on the horizon and James David enlisted on 13 April 1861 with Co. 'B', 8th SC Infantry. 

Six months after enlisting to serve in the Civil War, James David died from Typhoid Fever on 15 October 1861 in Richmond, Virginia.

Military records, online at Fold3.com, shows that Sarah Ann Sellers claimed the effects of her deceased husband on 11 March 1862.

I don’t know if James David Sellers body was returned home or not; but, there is a Confederate Grave Marker for James David Sellers in the Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

The Children of James David Sellers and Sarah Ann Gaskins are:
        i.    Queen M. Sellers was born on 1 Sep 1846 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Never married.
        ii.    Alexander Hossick Sellers was born in May 1850 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 15 Jun 1926 at the age of 76 and was buried at Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery.
         iii.    Eliza Ann Sellers, born 16 Oct 1854, Ruby, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Joel H. Douglass; died 16 May 1941, Junction City, Union, Arkansas.
         iv.    Louisa Jane Sellers, born 10 Jul 1856, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married William Jesse Jenkins, 1881; died 24 Jan 1938.
         v.    Mary E. Sellers, born 22 Mar 1857, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Abraham D. Catoe, abt 1879; died 7 Mar 1945, Valdosta, Lowndes, Georgia.

James David Sellers is my 1st Cousin 4 times removed.

Susana was born about 1837, the youngest child of Roland Sellers and Margaret Eddins. It’s quite possible that she was a twin to Sarah A. Sellers. Susanna remained single her entire life and spent that time with her Step-Mother Jane Baxter Sellers until Jane’s death after January of 1883.

In 1900, she is living with her brother Steven D. Sellers.

Susana Sellers passed away on 12 Feb. 1919 and was buried in the Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery.

Susana Sellers is my 1st Cousin 4 times removed.

It’s Family Time~Roland R. Sellers

Roland R. Sellers, a son of Roland Sellers and  Margaret Eddins was born in 1821 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

On 25 December 1844, at the age if 23, Roland married the widow of Thomas Brooks, a young lady by the name of Sarah Pratt Brooks, daughter of Samuel Pratt and Clarinda Ann Teal of Anson County, North Carolina.

Roland and Sarah had two known children:

i. William A. D. Sellers was born about 1849 in Morven, Anson, North Carolina.  William A. D. Sellers apparently died before reaching the age of 10; he was listed in the 1850 census, but not in the 1860 census records.

ii. Sarah Elizabeth Sellers was born about 1851 in Anson County, North Carolina. No further record of Sarah Elizabeth has been found.

When the Civil War broke out in January 1861, Roland left his farm and joined other Anson County boys serving with Company "K", 26th NC Regiment. Unfortunately, Roland did not return from the War. He was wounded in the intestines near Savannah, Georgia, on December 10, 1864. and passed away on 13 December 1864. He is buried in the Laurel Grove Cemetery (North); Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia.

Roland’s wife, Sarah Pratt Brooks Sellers, passed away on 23 Nov 1871 in Anson County. No tombstone has been found marking her resting place.

Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #109–William Riley Sellers

This is a new series of posting, appearing every Sunday, on selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resources if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

William R. Sellers¹

The estate folder begins at image 555. There are 18 images within the estate folder. (images 555-572)

William Riley Sellers was born abt 1823, a son of Roland Sellers and Margaret Eddins. I thought this post was going to be easy but once I got into the Probate file I realized my research was not complete. 

There are eight William R. Sellers in my database. The administrator of probate file #109 was Richard Calvin Sellers so this narrows the candidates to either his brother William Riley or his son William Riley.
 
Looking at his son’s death date of 1947 eliminates him because the probate took place in 1862; but, I have his brother William Riley Sellers death recorded as 23 March 1865.
Obviously, something is amiss here. If William Riley Sellers died in 1865 his brother would not be administrating his estate in 1862.  So off I go to Fold3.com to reviews civil war records. Looking at my genealogical database I see that I have three William R. Sellers of age to serve in the Civil War; but, only two died in the Civil War. 

• William Riley Sellers, b.  abt 1823, son of Roland Sellers and Margaret Sellers
• William Riley Sellers, b.  abt 1822, son of William Eddins Sellers and Elizabeth Parsons.
• William R. Sellers, b.  abt 182, son of John Sellers and Henrietta Norwood. This William R. moved to Tennessee and died in September 1898.

Because we have Richard Calvin Sellers named as the administrator, we now have sufficient documentation to distinguish which units these men served in and when and where they died.

First, we know that the estate of William Riley Sellers was probated between September 1862 and 19 Aug. 1885. The probate file shows this William Riley’s brother Richard Calvin was named as administrator and documents within the probate files shows that he started the probate process on or about 30 September 1862.

Then from the Civil war files on Fold3.com we find this record for a William R. Sellers ³- https://www.fold3.com/image/20/73893261

Pvt. William R. Sellers, Co. B, 8th SC Infantry

Only 6 documents are recorded in this file. the record shows that William R. Sellers, enlisted 13 April 1861, admitted to Chimborazo Hospital No. 3, Richmond, Virginia on April 9, 1862 (pg 5) and page 6 shows his transfer on May 20th, 1862 to Winder Hospital, Richmond, Virginia. ⁴



It is between this date 20 May 1862 (to Winder Hospital) and 30 September 1862 (Image 558, Estate Folder) that William Riley Sellers passed away. No document has been found documenting his actual death date but it seems obvious it had to have occurred between these two dates (20 May 1862-30 Sept. 1862). 

Two interesting tidbits regarding this W. R. Sellers. “Broken Fortunes” by Randolph W. Kirkland, Jr. shows that he died May 11, 1862. A FindAGrave Memorial (FAG Memorial# 93886626) in the Hollywood cemetery also shows that W. R. Sellers died on 11 May 1862. ^{5 6} 
These two items, the Book and the Memorial are "Derivative records" and is consider to be secondary information. 

On 19 August 1885, Richard Calvin Sellers petitioned the Courts to settle the estate of William Riley Sellers. Heirs apparent to the estate can be found on Image 572.

We have a dilemma; I calculated from copies of original documents that William Riley Sellers died between 20 May 1862  and 30 Sept 1862. A FindAGrave memorial and the book “Broken Fortunes” shows this individual passed away on 11 May 1862. No war record exist after page 6 stating that William R. Sellers was “Transf’d to Camp Winder, May 20th”.

1^st. I give bequeath and devise all my property both real and Personal to my Sister Susannah Sellers for and during her natural Life to hold and use as She needs it
2. and after the Death of my Sister Susannah what property of mine is left both Real and Personal it to go to my Sister Lucy for her Personal use.

Stephen D. Sellers, born 17 January 1834 , a son of Roland Sellers and Margaret Eddins.  He never married. Prior to his death on 13 March 1909 he and two of his unmarried sisters, named above, were residing in his home.

Sunday’s Obituary~P. A. Sellers

Phillip A. Sellers is my 1st cousin 4 times removed. He was born 3 May 1818, a son of Roland Sellers and Margaret Eddins. He married Martha Ann Brooks about 1844.



While out in his field yesterday morning Mr. Phillip A Sellers, of Lilesville township, very suddenly yielded to an attack of heart failure and expired when he fell. Anson County had no more worthy citizen. He was 82 years old and was loved, honored and revered by every one who knew him. His death will be deplored by the entire county. ¹

Phillip A. Sellers and his wife are buried at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery, Cairo, Anson County, North Carolina. ²

Sellers of the State of North Carolina, Anson County for & In consideration of the sum Two Hundred & Thirty Dollars to us paid by William R. Sellers of the District of Chesterfield in the state aforesaid, we have granted , bargained Sold and released & by these presents do grant bargain Sell & release unto the said William R.
