It’s Family Time~The Evan Smith & Lucy Gilham Page Family

Lucy Gilham Page is my 2nd great Grand Aunt. She was born 1 August 1840 in Montgomery County now Stanly County, North Carolina. She was a daughter of Sion Page and his wife Nancy [Maiden Name Unknown]. She was the 4th of nine children; 5 sons and 4 daughters.

At age 20, Lucy and Evan Smith were married on 8 March 1861 in Stanly County, North Carolina. Evan Smith, age 30, was a son of Joseph Smith and Mary “Polly” Gilbert.

Evan was a farmer. He and his wife Lucy made their home in Stanly County, North Carolina and set about raising a family. They most likely would have had a larger family if it hadn't been for uncontrolled events.  

12 April 1861 was a day of remembrance - The Civil War began. 

Evan Smith enlisted on 7 September 1861 with Co. K, 28th North Carolina Infantry. Evan Smith was twice captured. In his first capture (May 1862) he was exchanged. He was captured again on 12 May 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House and imprisoned at Elmira Prison Camp, NY. He died in prison on 2 April 1865; the War ended on 9 April 1865.

Lucy was a widow with 2 young boys to raise.

Evan Smith and Lucy Gilham Page had the following children:

 i. John Franklin Smith, born 25 Nov 1861, Stanly County, North Carolina; married Serena A. Howell, 2 Feb 1882, Stanly County, North Carolina; married Pattie Reynolds, aft 1909; died 28 Aug 1938.

 ii. James Evan Smith, born 20 May 1864, Stanly County, North Carolina; married Catharine Ann Huneycutt, 6 Feb 1887, Stanly County, North Carolina; died 9 Feb 1934, Albemarle, Stanly, North Carolina.

Lucy Gilham Page Smith died between Feb 1882 and Feb 1887 based on the marriage certificate of her two sons. Family folklore (unproven) says she died of TB. 

Lucy Gilham Page is my 2nd Great Grand Aunt.

Sion Page Estate, 1885

Sion Page was born about 1807 in North Carolina. He was a son of Uriah Page and his wife Grace, aka Gracey [Maiden name unknown]. Sion was a farmer. About 1828, he married a young lady by the name of Nancy [LNU]. Since no marriage document has been found, there is no known source document that gives her maiden name.

Sion and Nancy raised a family of nine children on a 160 acres farm in Stanly County; Their family consisted of three sons and six daughters.

On 30 October 1885, Sion Page executed his Last Will and Testament. Sion Page death date is unknown but we  know he died before 12 April 1887, the date of the document presented below. There are 287 on-line trees for Sion Page on Ancestry, I saw little evidence of research but a plentiful supply of misinformation. According to those trees Sion died in October 1885, 1887 and before 1896. Also, most of these trees has a first name of Simon for Sion Page. After 46 years of research I haven’t yet found their source document. All my documents shows my 3rd Great Grandfather to be Sion Page.

State of North Carolina}        In the Superior Court

Stanly County}
            A paper purporting to be the last Will and Testament of Sion Page, deceased, is exhibited before me the undersigned Clerk of Superior Court for said County, by W. A. Hartsell, the executor Therein named, and the due execution thereof by the said Sion Page, by the oath and Examination of Conrad Craton and G. N. Craton the subscribing witnefses thereto: Who being duly sworn doth depose and say, and each for himself deposeth and saith That he is a Subscribing witness to the paper writing now shown him purporting to be the last Will and Testament of Sion Page  That the said Sion Page in the presence of the deponent Subscribed his name at the end of said paper writing which is now shown as aforesaid, and which have date of the 20th day of October 1885.
        And the Deponent further saith, That the said Sion Page the Testator aforesaid did, at the time of subscribing his name as aforesaid, declare the said paper writing so subscribed by him, and exhibited, to be his last Will and Testament, and this deponent did thereupon Subscribe his name at the end of said Will, as an attesting Witness Thereto, and at the request and in the presence of said Testator,
    And this deponent further saith that at the said time when the said testator subscribed his name to the said last Will as aforesaid, and at the time of the deponent subscribing their names as attesting Witnefses thereto , as aforesaid, the said Sion Page was of Sound Mind ands memory, of full age to execute a Will, and was not under any restraint to the knowledge, information or belief of this deponent. And further these deponents say not.

It’s Family Time~Sion Page

Sion Page, son of Uriah Page and his wife Gracey, was born about 1807. At age 21 in 1828, he married a young lady named Nancy, age  23.  Some say that Nancy’s surname is DOVE while others say that her surname is ALMOND. As of today that issue has not been resolved.

Regardless, Sion and Nancy set about making a living as a Miner and raising a family. Over the next 23 years between 1829 and 1851 Sion and Nancy would have nine (9) children; three (3) sons and six daughters.  After the birth of the 9 children Sion would change occupation from that of a Miner to become a farmer. Nancy stayed home keeping house and caring for the children. 

The children of Sion and Nancy are: 



i. Allen McDaniel Page, born 14 Aug 1829, Stanly County, North Carolina; married Sarah Huneycutt, 8 Dec 1853, Stanly County, North Carolina.
ii. Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" Page, born 30 Aug 1835, Stanly County, North Carolina; married James W. Huneycutt, 20 May 1855, Stanly County, North Carolina; died 23 Mar 1915, Stanly County, North Carolina.
iii. Rosa A. Page was born on 29 Apr 1838 in Stanly County, North Carolina. ^{10 11}
iv. Lucy G. Page, born 1 Aug 1840, Stanly County, North Carolina; married Evan Smith, 8 Mar 1861, Albemarle, Stanly, North Carolina.

Sometime between 1880 and October 1885, Nancy Page, wife of Sion Page passed away. No Will, tombstone or obituary has been found documenting her death. But, Sion Page wrote his Will on 30 October 1885 and no mention of his wife was made within the will. His entire estate was left to his daughter, Mary Frances Page.  

No death date or tombstone has been found for Sion but we know from probate records that he died before October 1887. 


In the document above, Mary F. Page applied for Letters of testamentary on the estate of her Father, Sion Page. This document, Application for Letters Testamentary, is dated 3 October 1887. Therefore we know that Sion Page was deceased before 3 October 1887.

TRANSCRIPTION:
I, Sine Page of the County of Stanly in the State of North Carolina am indebted to R. A. Anderson of Stanly County in said State in the Sum of thirty Dollars & 30 Cts. for which he holds My Note to be due to wit, January 1^st 1878, and to Secure the payment of the Same I do hereby convey to him these articles of personal property, viz, one mare colt two years old Dark bay black main & tail and one work oxen white and black colored has no horns about 6 or 7 years old.
But on this special trust, that if I fail to pay Said Debt and interest on or before the 1^st day of January A.D. 1878, then he may Sell said property or so much thereof as may be necessary by public auction for Cash, first giving twenty days’ notice at 3 public places and apply the proceeds of such Sale to the discharge of Said debt and interest on the Same and pay any surpluses to me.
Given under my hand and seal this 26^th day of April 1877.

Sion Page was born about 1802 and died about April 1887. He married Nancy (maiden name unknown). Many on line trees show Nancy’s maiden name to be ”DOVE” and another group has her listed as Nancy “ALMOND”. I have yet to find any documents that would substantiate either of these conclusions. If you have information on Nancy's maiden name I would love to hear from you. 
During my on-line search of the Stanly County Deed Books I could not find any other Deeds in which my Sion Page was named. Evidently, he never owned any property within the county.  
 
Sion Page is my 3rd Great Grand Father.

The Marriage of my 2nd Great Grandparents – James W. Huneycutt and Sarah Elizabeth Page

 
In the 1850’s the Huneycutt and Page families were neighbors in rural Stanly County, North Carolina. 
 
The Marcus Honeycutt family with his wife, Charity Dry had nine children; six sons and three daughters. Down the road a few families lived Sion Page with his wife Nancy. Sion and Nancy had nine children also; six daughters and three sons. 
 
So the children of these two couples grew up knowing each other’s from birth to adulthood. 
 
So it is no surprise in 1855 that James W. Honeycutt and Sarah Elizabeth Page united in Holy Matrimony on 20 May 1855 in Stanly County, North Carolina.
The marriage was documented a book entitled “Record of Marriage by Ministers and JP's; Volume #1, Years 1850-1867” on page 16.¹

James and Sarah were married for 41 years when James passed away on 19 November 1896 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield County, South Carolina. 
 
They reared a family of five children. Those children were:
 
i. Louvena Huneycutt, born 1 Oct 1855, Cabarrus Country, North Carolina; married John Calvin Deese, 9 Apr 1884, Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina; died 16 Oct 1889, Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina.
ii. Nellie Isabella Huneycutt, born 27 Oct 1858, Anson County, North Carolina; married Henry Harrison Deese Sr., 1 Feb 1875, Morven, Anson, North Carolina; died 9 May 1938, Landis, Rowan Co., NC.
iii. John Allen Huneycutt, born 19 Jan 1864, ,North Carolina; married Lizzie, 1892; died 21 Nov 1932, Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Louvena Huneycutt Deese is my Great Grandmother. Sarah Elizabeth Page Huneycutt died on 23 March 1915. She is buried in the Palestine Cemetery, Stanly County, North Carolina.

Today’s subject is the Stanly County WILL of Sion Page, 1885.

Sion Page Will^[1]I, Sion Page of the County of Stanly and Sate of North Carolina being of sound mind and memory but considering the uncertainty of my earthly existence do male and declare this to be my last Will and Testament in manner and form following,That is to say first That my  executor herein after named shall provide for my  body a decent burial suitable to the wishes of my relatives and friends, and pay all burial expense together with my just debts wherever however and to whomever owing, out of the moneys  that may first come into his hand as a part or parcel of my estate. 
Item 1st. I give and devise to my daughter Mary Frances one Cow & calf one bed and furniture, two hogs entirely hers. I also give and bequeath to my daughter Mary Frances my Kitchen furniture one chest, one Table, Six Chairs. All my Cooking Utensils and my table ware.
                My will and desire is that all the residue of my estate shall be sold and the debts owing to me collected, and if there should be any surplus over and above the payment of debts and expenses shall be paid to my daughter Mary Frances for her support.
And lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my trusty friend Wm. R. Hartsell my lawful executor, to all intent and purposes, to execute this my last Will and Testament according to the true intent and meaning of the same and every part and clause thereof, hereby revoking and declaring utterly void all other Wills and Testaments by me heretofore made.  In Witness whereof I the said Sion Page do hereunto set my hand seal. This the 30th day of October Anno Domini 1885.

Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" Page was born on 30 Aug 1835 in Stanly County, North Carolina.^{1 2 3 4} She is the daughter of Sion Page and Nancy Dove, the granddaughter of Uriah C. Page.  She had 8 siblings; three brothers and five sisters.

Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" Page and James W. Huneycutt were married on 20 May 1855 in Stanly County, North Carolina.

James W. Huneycutt, a son of James W. Huneycutt and Sarah Barrier, was born on 26 Apr 1833 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina.⁵  James was a farmer and the family lived in Cabarrus, Stanly and Anson County in North Carolina and Chesterfield County, South Carolina. ^{6 7 8 9}

James W. Huneycutt died on 19 Nov 1896 at the age of 63 and was buried at Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery  in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.^{10 11}

Sarah Elizabeth (Page) Huneycutt died on 23 Mar 1915 at the age of 79 in Stanly County, North Carolina.¹² Sallie was buried on 24 Mar 1915 at Palestine Methodist Church Cemetery  in Stanly County, North Carolina.^{13 14}
