Gaps in the Thompson Powell Lineage

 Thompson B. Powell and Mary “Polly” Boatwright were the parents of 4 children. Thompson B., born abt 1802 married Mary Boatwright about 1834. Their children's were:

1. Mary E. Powell, b. 3 Dec 1835; Married William Monroe Hurst about 1854; died 9 May 1917.
2. Richard Thompson Powell, b. abt 1841; after 1880, date unknown.
3. Ann Rebecca Powell, b. 8 Jan 1847; married Ferguson Hale Smith, abt 1871; died 24 Feb. 1902.
4. Ellen E. Powell, b. 11 Oct 1851, died 9 Dec. 1940

Thompson B. Powell Estate was probate in 1866; he died sometime before 11 June 1866. It is not known when his wife Mary Boatwright died but the last Census she appeared in was the 1860 Chesterfield Census.

In the 1870 Census for Chesterfield County we find only two of the children – Richard Thompson Powell and Mary E. (Powell) Hurst. Richard Thompson is listed as T. R. Powell. In his household is a 23 year female with the initials M. E. Powell perhaps suggesting that he has taken a bride. Yet no other listing for Richard has been found until recently and no other listing for M. E. Powell b. 1857 has ever been found.

Yesterday, I received from another Powell researcher (M. P.) a 1880 Census sheet for Alachua County, Florida. Shown on the Census page is a Richard Powell, age 40 with his Sister Ellen E. Powell, age 20. I believe these two individuals to be the son and daughter of Thompson B. Powell and Mary Boatwright. Both are shown to have been born in South Carolina.

No record of Richard Thompson Powell death has been found. It is believed he died in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. His tombstone was discovered in 1974 during the reconstruction and expansion of Highway #9. His grave was marked with a Military tombstone but no death date was recorded.  Find A Grave Memorial#55555209. Three graves were relocated from the roadway path to Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery on Zoar Road when the highway was widen to 4 lanes.

Wm. M. Hurst & wife to Samuel Powell Deed

The State of South Carolina.
Know all men by these presents that we William M. Hurst and wife Mary E. Hurst of the County of Chesterfield in the State aforesaid for and in  consideration of one hundred dollars to us paid by Samuel Powell of the  County of Chesterfield in the State aforesaid have granted bargained Sold and released and by these presents do grant bargain sell and release unto the said Samuel Powell all that certain piece parcel or tract of land Situate and being in the County of  Chesterfield in the State aforesaid on the waters of Abrams Creek and contains Fifty seven acres more or less (the said being the one-half part of a tract which was allowed to the said William M. Hurst and wife Mary E. Hurst in the division of the Estate of the late Thompson B. Powell deceased) and bounded as follows: - Beginning at a Pine 3X0 and runs N. 65 W 39 chs to a Stake 3Xn by a pine Station (dead) Then N. 28 E. 30 chs to a Stake 3Xn Then S. 26 E. 48 chs and 25 links to the beginning – together with all and singular the rights members hereditaments and  appurtenances to the said premises belonging or in any wise incident or appertaining to have  and to hold all and Singular the premises before mentioned unto the said Samuel Powell his heirs and assigns forever. And we do hereby bind ourselves our heirs Executors and Administrators to warrant and forever defend all and Singular the said premises unto the said Samuel Powell his heirs and assigns against ourselves and our heirs and against every person whomsoever lawfully claiming or to claim the same or any part thereof.

On 7 April 1873, W. M. Hurst and Wife Sold to Samuel Powell, 57 acres of land allocated to William M. Hurst and his wife Mary E. [Powell] Hurst in the division of the estate of the late Thompson B. Powell. Thompson Powell died before 11 June 1866 according to the probate his estate.

This Deed took place in April 1873 and Samuel Powell was available to execute the transaction. However, I have yet to find any other mention of Samuel Powell in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #201-Thompson B. Powell

This is a new series of posting, appearing every Sunday, on selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resources if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Thompson B. Powell was an early and successful planter in Chesterfield County. He was born in 1802 and his parents are unknown. 

He married about 1834 Mary ‘Polly’ Boatwright daughter of Lewis Boatwright and Sarah Lundy also a well known family within the country.   

Thompson and Sarah had 4 children; 3 daughters and a son.

• Mary E. Powell, married William Monroe Hurst
• Richard Thompson Powell, married M. W. T.
• Ann Rebecca Powell,  married Ferguson Hale Smith
• Ellen E. Powell, never married

Thompson died about 1866. I have not found an exact date for his death but there are clues within his probate folder (Folder #201) and Chesterfield County Land Deeds.

Richard Thompson Powell submitted an application for Letters of administration on his Dad’s estate on 11 June 1866. (Image #1090). Letters were granted and the Administration Bond was signed on 25 June 1866. (Image 1108 & 1109)

Appointed appraiser’s for the estate were S. D. Timmons, Michael Davis (my 3rd Great Grandfather) and G. R. Boatwright.

Documents within the estate folder though they don't contain a death date clearly shows that Thompson B. Powell died sometime time in early 1866.  Image 1109 above dated 11 June 1866 is the earliest dated document within the estate folder thus supporting the fact that Thompson B. Powell passed away sometime before 11 June 1866.

Hurst and wife Ellen are selling off 57 acres of land allocated to them [William M. Hurst and his wife Mary E. [Powell] Hurst] in the division of the estate of the late Thompson B. Powell, 7 April 1873. Thompson B. Powell was granted 257 acres on Abrams Creek, 12 Oct 1857, Book 89, page 299.²

Summons For Final Settlement

Thompson B. Powell, born 1802 died in Chesterfield County South Carolina sometime before 26 April 1866. He was 64 years of age. Thompson was a very successful farmer and highly esteemed in the county.  

About 1834, Thompson married Mary “Polly” Boatwright daughter of Lewis Boatwright and Sarah Lundy. To this  union were born four children; three daughters and a son.

Thompson died intestate in 1866. The letter below, dated 27 June 1866 is the request of his son  Richard Thompson Powell, Jr. for letters of Administration.¹ The earliest date I found mention in his estate folder was 26 April 1866. It is believed that Thompson died sometime before this April 1866 date.

The Petition of Richard T. Powell Jr. Admrs of the goods, and chattels of Thompson B. Powell deceased, Sheweth, that the said deceased died intestate having whilst he lived and at the time of his death, divers goods, and chattels upon which your petitioner has taken out Letters of Administration. And in as much as the said goods, and chattels, are liable to waste and destruction – your petitioner prays for an order for the sale thereof on such terms as may be deemed best – June 27^th 1866

The heirs of Thompson B. Powell including his wife Mary Boatwright Powell were summoned by the court on the 20th March 1867  to audits the account and make final settlement of the estate.

        To Mrs. Mary Powell, Wm. M. Hurst, and Wife Mary E. Richd T. Powell, Jr. Ann R. Powell and Ellen Powell, legal heirs and representatives of Thompson B. Powell who died intestate.
Greeting.
    You are hereby required to appear at the Court of Ordinary to be held at Chesterfield Court House for Chesterfield District on the first day of April next for the purpose of having the accounts of the administrator of said Thompson B. Powell deceased audited and for final settlement of said estate.
    Given under my hand and seal this Twentieth day of March A. D. 1867

No tombstone or death date has been found for Thompson or his wife Mary Boatwright Powell. His estate file is evidence of his death in early 1866 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Ann Rebecca Powell Smith was the 3rd wife of Ferguson Hale Smith. She was the daughter of Thompson B. Powell and Mary “Polly” Boatwright.

Ann and Ferguson Hale ware married about 1871. There firstborn, a son, called Arthur P. was born 29 September 1872. They would have a total of 5 children, the other four being all girls.

Ferguson Hale Smith died on 14 January 1902 and the following month on 24 Feb 1902, Ann Rebecca Powell Smith passed away.

This tombstone is located in a Smith Cemetery near the NC State Line on the right hand side of  Mayesville Road going north/north east.  Cemetery was accessed from NC side of state line. I was taken there years ago by B. J. Steele and has been unable to relocate. B. J. Steele has passed away.
