It’s Family Time~The Lewis Boatwright, Sr. Family

Lewis Boatwright, Sr. was borne about 1758 in The Cheraw District, South Carolina. His parents were William Boatwright and Mary Elbert. He was the 3rd of six known sons of this couple. 

Lewis married Sarah Lundy about 1785 in the Cheraw District.

Sarah Lundy was born about 1760 in South Carolina, most likely also in the Cheraw District. Sarah was the daughter of Simon Samuel Lundy and his wife Rebecca {Last name unknown.].    

In 1799, Lewis, Sr., his son, Lewis Jr. and Thomas Boatwright owned land in and around what is now known as Marion County, South Carolina.

This Indenture made the twenty Seventh day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand Seven hundred and Ninety Nine in the twenty third year of the Independence of the United States of America~ Between Lewis Boatwright Senr., Lewis Boatwright Junr and Thomas Boatwright of Catfish planters of the State 

By October 1802 , Lewis is acquiring Land in the Chesterfield District.

Land Deeds~Genealogical Goldmines

Time and time again I have written about the use of Land Deeds in your genealogical research. Land deeds are often over-looked or passed aside when they may be the very key to your genealogical  “brick-wall”.

For instance in Anson County Land Deed O-148 we have two Land Deeds both saying that John Jackson is the Son of Stephen Jackson and Ann Kendrick. 

In the first deed on page 148, Stephen Jackson and Ann Kendrick are conveying a negro boy named Simon to their Son John Jackson for the love, good will and affection they bear toward their Son.

In the 2nd deed, Stephen Jackson is conveying a tract of land consisting of 250 acres to his Son John Jackson for the love, good will and affection they bear toward his Son.

It‘s Family Time~Samuel and Sarah Ann Hurst Boatwright

Samuel Boatwright was born on 5 Aug 1832, a son of Lewis Boatwright, Jr. and Elizabeth Rebecca Davis. He was the fourth of eight children born to Lewis and Elizabeth.

Samuel Boatwright married Sarah Ann Hurst  about 1851 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. This date is based on the birth of their first born, a son named William Manley Boatwright with a date of birth of 13 December 1852.

Sarah Ann Hurst, daughter of Isaac Hurst and Henrietta Rivers, was born on 10 Mar 1826 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Samuel was a farmer just as most others during this time period.  Their family was small compared to others during this era consisting of 3 sons and 2 daughters.

Therrell of said County and State, for and in consideration of one dollars to me in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged paid by William M. Boatwright of said County and state, have granted, bargained, sold and released and do hereby grant, bargain, sell , release and quit claim to the said William M. Boatwright all the right, title, interest, claim and demand which I have now, or may hereafter have either in possession or expectancy of, in or to any share part or portion of the estate, both real and personal of the Estate of the late Samuel Boatwright deceased, which I may have acquired through my late wife Nancy E. Samuel  Boatwright died on 19 Feb 1863 at the age of 30 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Probate Folder 80 documents the dispersal of Samuel's Estate.

Sarah Ann Hurst Boatwright died on 28 Aug 1910 at the age of 84 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Sarah Ann left a Will and Probate Folder 1141 documents the dispersal of Sarah's Estate.

Samuel and Sarah Ann Boatwright are buried in the Boatwright Family Cemetery, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Samuel Boatwright is my 1st Cousin 4 times removed.

It’s Family Times~The Duncan Teal Family

Duncan Teal was born about 1818 in Anson County, North Carolina.¹ Duncan served with the 6th Regiment, South Carolina Cavalry (Aiken's Partisan Rangers) (1st Partisan Rangers) during the Civil War(1861-1865).^{2 3} Duncan was a farmer and owned a one hundred and fourteen acres spread in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.  On 8 July 1871, he deeded this farm to his only child, his son, Thomas L. Teal  (DB 3, Page 451-452). ⁴

Duncan Teal married Louisa Ann Boatwright sometime before 1864. Louisa Ann Boatwright, daughter of Lewis Boatwright and Elizabeth Rebecca Davis, was born about 1830 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.⁵

Duncan Teal and Louisa Ann Boatwright had one known child:

        i.    Thomas Lucas Teal Sr., born 26 Nov 1869, Anson County, North Carolina; married Lucy Teresa Eddins, 1889; died 8 Jul 1935, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Duncan Teal, age 77, died 12 February 1895 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. He was buried in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.⁶

Louisa Ann Teal died on 1 Sep 1902 at the age of 72 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. She was buried beside her husband in the Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. 

Louisa Ann Boatwright Teal is my 1st Cousin 4 times removed.

Finding the Correct Name of the Wife of Lewis Boatwright, Jr.

In 1927, Harry Alexander Davis published an unsourced book of the David/Davis family entitled “The Davis family (Davies and David) in Wales and America : genealogy of Morgan David of Pennsylvania.”

The book has been widely used by Davis researchers within the United States. The book is not without errors and as stated before none of the information within the book has been sourced. One of those errors will be addressed in this web post.

On pages 54 and 55 of the book, Mr. Davis shows that the 7th child of Thomas Davis and Nancy Rivers was a daughter name Margaret Elizabeth who married Lewis Boatwright.



Elizabeth did marry Lewis Boatwright, Jr. but in several deeds related to his estate, she maintains that her name is Elizabeth Rebecca NOT  Margaret Elizabeth as stated in the Davis book. See Chesterfield County Land Deeds, DB 1, page 46-47 and DB 3, page 301-302.

One child of Margaret and Lewis is not mentioned in the Davis book. That child was Louisa Ann who married Duncan Teal. Dates for individuals do not match census records; there is a known death date for Lewis but no known death date exists for Elizabeth Rebecca Davis Boatwright.

Chesterfield District}
Know all men by these presents that I Lewis Boatwright of the State and district aforesaid for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and fifty ($250} to me in hand paid have granted bargained sold and released and by these presents do grant bargain sale and release unto my son Samuel Boatwright of the said State and district a certain piece parcel and tract of land containing two hundred and fifty-one (251) [acres] more or less bounded on the North by R. Smith’s land on the East by W. W. Davis’s land on the South by Geo. Boatwright’s land and on the East by Wesley Streator’s land together with all and singular the rights members hereditaments and appurtenances to the said premises belonging or in any wise incident or appertaining to have and to hold all and singular the above-mentioned premise unto the said Samuel Boatwright his heirs and assigns forever and I the said Lewis Boatwright do hereby warrant and forever defend the said premises with their appurtenances unto the said Samuel Boatwright and bind myself my heirs executors and administrators to warrant and defend the same unto the said Samuel Boatwright is heirs and assigns forever against myself and heirs and from and against the claim or claims of any person claiming the same. It’s Family Time~The Family of Lewis Boatwright, Jr.

Lewis Boatwright Jr. was born about 1798 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He was the son of Lewis Boatwright, Sr. and Sarah Lundy.

Lewis Boatwright Jr. married Elizabeth Rebecca Davis about 1818 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. This date is based on the birth of their known first born child, George R. Boatwright on 19 January 1819.

Elizabeth Rebecca Davis, daughter of Thomas Davis and Nancy Rivers, was born in 1798–1802 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.


Lewis Jr. and Lewis Sr. were farmers and very well known in their community. In April 1853, Lewis Jr. sold a large portion of his land holdings to his son, Samuel Boatwright. The deed is recorded in Deed Book 1, pages 47 and 48.

Land Deed - Lewis Boatwright to Samuel Boatwright dated 15 April 1854 states that he Lewis Boatwright "do grant bargain sell and release unto my Son Samuel". Transfer of 250 acres for the sum of $250.00. States that Elizabeth R. Boatwright the wife of the within named Lewis Boatwright did appears this 10 day January 1866. Elizabeth Rebecca [Davis] Boatwright relinquishes her rights of dower. Harry Alexander Davis in his book "The Davis of Wales and America", page 55 has her name recorded as Margaret Elizabeth Davis. Yet, in this land deed she states that her name is Elizabeth Rebecca Boatwright.[Chesterfield County, SC, Register of Deeds, Book #1, Page 47-48]

Lewis Boatwright, Jr. died on 7 Mar 1863 at the age of 65 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He was buried in Chesterfield County, South Carolina but no tombstone has been found. Lewis’ estate was assigned Probate Folder #56 and was probated in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.


Elizabeth Rebecca Boatwright died about Nov 1874 at the age of 76 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. No tombstone has been found for Elizabeth Rebecca Boatwright. Her death in Nov 1874 is based on the triggering of Guardianship for her minor grand children.

As stated above, Lewis Boatwright, Jr. died in March 1863 at which time his surviving spouse and children inherited his estate. I believe the death of Elizabeth Rebecca (Davis) Boatwright occurred sometime about November 1874 triggered the court action requiring new guardianship of the surviving grandchildren who were the heirs-at-law in this estate.

On 6 February 1863, Carroll Washington Davis passed away in Chesterfield, SC. Three weeks later, his 2nd wife, Mary B. Boatwright Davis, sister to his deceased wife, passed away leaving 7 orphan children under the age of twenty one.

The obituary² for the oldest son claims that he (William Benjamin “Uncle Doc” Davis) was returning home from the War and

“After reaching home on stick and crutch he helped look after and care for his six orphan brothers and sisters, his father and mother having died February 6 and 28, 1863, respectively.”

In December 1870, Michael Davis (my 3rd Great Grandfather) was named Guardian of  the youngest of these 7 children – Mary Eliza Davis, b. 22 February 1863.

Mary B. Boatwright 2nd wife) and  Elizabeth Boatwright (1st wife ) of Carroll Washington Davis were daughters of Lewis Boatwright, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Rebecca Davis. Thus, the 7 children were all grandchildren of Lewis and Elizabeth Rebecca Boatwright.

We know that Lewis Boatwright., Jr. died on 7 March 1863. Up until this point all that was known about Elizabeth Rebecca (Davis) Boatwright was that she died after 1870.

I believe this estate folder sheds some light on when Elizabeth Rebecca (Davis) Boatwright passed away.

There is no date on this petition but the next Image 1172, The Guardian Bond, is dated and the date on the Guardian Bond for James F. Perkins is 2 November 1874.

 
As stated above, Lewis Boatwright, Jr. died in March 1863 at which time his surviving spouse and children inherited his estate. I believe the death of Elizabeth Rebecca (Davis) Boatwright occurred sometime about November 1874 triggering the court action requiring new guardianship of the surviving grandchildren who were the heirs-at-law in this estate.


The children in this Estate are my 2nd Cousins 3 times removed.

Michael Davis is my 3rd Great Grandfather.

His sister, Elizabeth Rebecca Boatwright is my 3rd Great Grand Aunt.

George R. Boatwright was born 19 Jan 1819, a son of  Lewis Boatwright, Jr. and Elizabeth Rebecca Davis.

About 1852, he married Lauretta Hurst, b. 1831, a daughter of Isaac Hurst and Henrietta ‘Ritta’ Rivers. To this union were borne 6 children; 4 daughters and two sons.

George R. Boatwright died 9 April 1894 leaving a modest estate consisting of both real and personal property. His son Drury L. Boatwright was the Executor of the estate. 

Permission was received from the court to sell the personal property most likely because Lauretta had predeceased her husband. All the personal property was sold on 30 April 1894. The list of buyers at this sale is most interesting and I highly recommend you review the property list.

George also left a Will directing how his property was to be distributed. You can read his will at this link:

It's so tragic when babies are lost long before they reached their full potential. Such is the case of little 3 year old Lewis Boatwright, son of George R. Boatwright and his wife Lauretta Hurst. Lewis left behind his two sisters, Elizabeth and Harriett. He was buried in the Davis Family Cemetery.

Lewis Boatwright, Jr, son of Lewis Boatwright, Sr. and Sarah Lundy died 7 March 1863 at the age of 65. He married Elizabeth Rebecca Davis, daughter of Thomas Davis and Nancy Rivers about 1818. Together they raised a family of eight; three sons and five daughters. Tragically, Lewis lost two of his children within 3 days of each other in February 1863. His son, Samuel on 19 February 1863 and his daughter Mary B. on 22 February 1863.
No will has been found for Lewis Boatwright estate indicating he died intestate. The administrator of his estate was Elisha B. Smith. At the time of his death he had two grown sons (George R. and Calvin) of age to administered the estate. He was a very successful farmer and left a rather large estate for this time period. His personal estate alone was worth over $7000.00

When Carroll Washington Davis passed away om 6 February 1863 at the age of 41, he left an extensive estate. In these short years Carroll had twice married and served in the Civil War. 

Born on 20 June 1821, he was a son of William Davis and Julia Thurman. On 17 February 1846, he married Elizabeth Boatwright, daughter of Lewis Boatwright and Elizabeth Rebecca Davis. After the birth of 3 children Elizabeth tragically passed away on 15 December 1853, mostly from childbirth complications. This left Carroll in a predicament; a farmer with three small children, he needed a mother for his children. 

That young lady turned out to be his deceased wife’s baby sister. On 10 August 1854, Carroll and Mary B. Boatwright, daughter of Lewis Boatwright and Elizabeth Rebecca Davis were married. 

Carroll Washington Davis died on 6 February 1863. At the time of his death, Mary was pregnant with her baby due very soon. That baby, Mary Eliza Davis, was born on 22 February 1863. Unfortunately the Mother did not survive, passing away on 22 February 1863, just 16 days after losing her husband. The tragic loss of both Carroll and Mary left 7 young children ranging in age from just born to 16 as orphans. 

Initially, David R. Davis, brother of Carroll Washington Davis was granted Letters of administration upon the Estate. He passed away before closing the estate and Carroll Washington’ son, who had now reached the age of majority, petitioned the Court and was granted “Letters of  Administration de bonis non.” ²

3. That said estate has never been settled and David R. Davis has recently died intestate and letters of administration de bonis non on the estate of C. W. Davis are necessary in order to settle said estate and your petitioner is a son of the said C. W. Davis deceased and as such is entitled to said Letters.
Wherefore your petitioner prays that letters administration de bonis non upon said estate be granted to him.

Thompson B. Powell ¹

Thompson B. Powell was an early and successful planter in Chesterfield County. He was born in 1802 and his parents are unknown. 

He married about 1834 Mary ‘Polly’ Boatwright daughter of Lewis Boatwright and Sarah Lundy also a well known family within the country.   

Thompson and Sarah had 4 children; 3 daughters and a son.

• Mary E. Powell, married William Monroe Hurst
• Richard Thompson Powell, married M. W. T.
• Ann Rebecca Powell,  married Ferguson Hale Smith
• Ellen E. Powell, never married

Thompson died about 1866. I have not found an exact date for his death but there are clues within his probate folder (Folder #201) and Chesterfield County Land Deeds.

Richard Thompson Powell submitted an application for Letters of administration on his Dad’s estate on 11 June 1866. (Image #1090). Letters were granted and the Administration Bond was signed on 25 June 1866. (Image 1108 & 1109)

Appointed appraiser’s for the estate were S. D. Timmons, Michael Davis (my 3rd Great Grandfather) and G. R. Boatwright.

Documents within the estate folder though they don't contain a death date clearly shows that Thompson B. Powell died sometime time in early 1866.  Image 1109 above dated 11 June 1866 is the earliest dated document within the estate folder thus supporting the fact that Thompson B. Powell passed away sometime before 11 June 1866. 



Chesterfield County, SC, Deed Book 4, Page 321; Contain a land deed between W. M. Hurst & Wife to Samuel Powell, William M. Hurst and wife Ellen are selling off 57 acres of land allocated to them [William M. Hurst and his wife Mary E. [Powell] Hurst] in the division of the estate of the late Thompson B. Powell, 7 April 1873. Thompson B. Powell was granted 257 acres on Abrams Creek, 12 Oct 1857, Book 89, page 299.²

Thus far we have taken a look at 6 of the 11 children of Thomas and Nancy Rivers Davis. Those six are Samuel, William, Susannah, Isaac Jacob, Hulda and Jonathan Daniel Davis.

Today posting on is child number 7 – Elizabeth Rebecca  Davis. 

Elizabeth Rebecca Davis was born between 1798-1802 based on 1850,1860 and 1870 Census data in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. ^{1 2 3} Elizabeth last appeared in the 1870 census, Court House, Chesterfield County, South Carolina. ⁴ Elizabeth died after 1870 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

In 1927, Harry Alexander Davis, published a book, without sources, entitled “The Davis Family in Wales and America” whereby he identified this daughter of Thomas and Nancy Davis as Margaret Elizabeth Davis. This name has prevailed in family trees for years.



Two land deeds on files in the Chesterfield County Courthouse shows that the Wife of Lewis Boatwright gave her name as Elizabeth Rebecca and signed these two deeds as Elizabeth Rebecca Boatwright. These two deeds are recorded in Deed Book 1, pages 47-48 and in another deed on page 280. ^{5 6}


Elizabeth Rebecca Davis and Lewis Boatwright were married about 1818 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.⁷ Lewis Boatwright, son of Lewis Boatwright and Sarah Lundy, was born about 1798 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.⁸ Lewis and his family are enumerated in 1850 and 1860, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.^{9 10} He died on 7 Mar 1863 at the age of 65 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.¹¹ Lewis is most likely buried in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. No gravesite or tombstone has been found for Lewis Boatwright; his death date is recorded in the equity records of Chesterfield District Court of Common Pleas, Equity Sale, 1823-1869. ¹²

On 15 April 1854, Lewis Boatwright sold to his son to Samuel Boatwright 250 acres of Land in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
The deed states that he Lewis Boatwright "do grant bargain sell and release unto my Son Samuel". Transfer of 250 acres for the sum of $250.00. States that Elizabeth R. Boatwright the wife of the within named Lewis Boatwright did appears this 10 day January 1866. Elizabeth Rebecca [Davis] Boatwright relinquishes her rights of dower. ¹³ [Chesterfield County, SC, Register of Deeds, Book #1, Page 47-48].

Lewis Boatwright and Elizabeth Rebecca Davis had the following children:

i. George R. Boatwright, born 19 Jan 1819, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Lauretta Hurst, abt 1852, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; died 9 Apr 1894, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
ii. Elizabeth Boatwright, born 2 May 1820, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Carroll Washington Davis, 17 Feb 1846, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; died 15 Dec 1853, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
iii. Louisa Ann Boatwright, born abt 1830, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Duncan Teal.
iv. Samuel Boatwright, born 5 Aug 1832, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Sarah Ann Hurst, abt 1851, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 19 Feb 1863, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Note that Carroll Washington Davis married two daughters of Lewis and Elizabeth Rebecca Boatwright. This is not a mistake. Carroll first married  Elizabeth Boatwright and they had three (3) children. Elizabeth Boatwright Davis died December 15, 1853. After her death, Carroll married her sister Mary B. Boatwright Carroll and Mary had four (4) additional children.
