Military Tuesday~Letter Home from the War Front

 During World War I, Sergt. William E. Sellers wrote this letter home from the European Front. William E. Sellers is the son of Charles Riley Sellers and Sara Ella Brock.

August 1. 1918.
Will write you a short letter to let you know I am well and having very good time. I have been up the line on two tours of duty and was under a heavy artillery barrage for one-half hour at one time, but when the barrage was lifted for some reason or other the Huns did not come over as we were expecting. We have had very good luck up until now as we have not had a man wounded and I guess you can see in the papers that we have the Boche on the run, and we are going to keep them running. No lousy trench for the Americans (I forgot to tell you that I got lousy the first thing of the reel over here, the first time up the line). I do not think it will be very long before the American troops will be home again. Will write you all ever chance I have.  Write me often.

Sergt. William E. Sellers, enlisted on 6 Mar 1915 and was discharged on 3 Dec 1918. During his service time he was awarded the Distinguish Service Cross. The Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) is the United States Army’s second highest military decoration for soldiers who display extraordinary heroism in combat with an armed enemy force.³

Sergt. William E. Sellers, died 8 April 1970 and was buried in Mount Comfort Cemetery, Fairfax County, Virginia.

 William E. Sellers was born 12 November 1892, a son of Charles Riley Sellers and Sara Ella Brock. He married Edith Mildred Burns about 1926. He served in World War I and was awarded the Distinguish Service Cross.

CHESTERFIELD MAN HONORED

Washington, July 23.—Sergt. William E. Sellers of Chesterfield, S.C., has been awarded the Distinguish Service Cross, the war department advised today in a cablegram from General Pershing.  

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant William Edmond Sellers (ASN: 1311712), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 118th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, A.E.F., near Brancourt, France, 8 October 1918. While his platoon was advancing Sergeant Sellers, on his own initiative, rushed ahead of the line and, flanking an enemy machine-gun post, shot one of the crew and bayoneted the other. His action saved his platoon from heavy causalities.

Actions that merit the Distinguished Service Cross must be of such a high degree that they are above those required for all other U.S. combat decorations, but which do not meet the criteria for the Medal of Honor. The Army Distinguished Service Cross is equivalent to the Naval Services' Navy Cross, the Air and Space Forces' Air Force Cross, and the Coast Guard Cross. Prior to the creation of the Air Force Cross in 1960, airmen were awarded the Distinguished Service Cross."
