Surname Saturday - John H. Wadsworth

John H. Wadsworth was born about 1791 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He is enumerated in Census for the years 1820-19880 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.1 2 3 4 5 6 He died after 1880 at the age of 89+ in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. 7

John H. Wadsworth and Susannah Davis were married about 1820 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Susannah Davis, daughter of Thomas Davis and Nancy Rivers, was born in 1792 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. 8 9 She is listed in the 1840-1870 Census for Chesterfield County, South Carolina. 10 11 She died about 1875 at the age of 83 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

John H. Wadsworth and Susannah Davis had the following children:

2              i.   Lewis H. Wadsworth, born 13 Sep 1832, Chesterfield District, South Carolina; married Mary Ann Freeman, 28 Dec 1849, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Elizabeth A. Crawford, abt 1902; died 7 Mar 1910, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
ii.   Mary Elizabeth Wadsworth was born about 1835 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. 12 13

The 1840 census indicates there is a daughter, age 15 thru 19, whose name is presently unknown. John H. Wadsworth remarried prior to 1880 to a lady named Mary (last name unknown).

John H. Wadsworth and Mary were married. Mary was born about 1852. 14

John H. Wadsworth and Mary had the following child:

                              i.   15 Sarah Christain Wadsworth was born in Nov 1880 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Susannah Davis, wife of John H. Wadsworth is my third great grand aunt.

Extant record on this family are very limited. However, I did find one additional source that is very confusing. There is a land deed in Anson County, NC where Alexander Martin is selling 97 acres of land to Sarah C. & Susanah Wadsworth for $500.00. The deed transaction is dated 4th January 1886. [Anson Co. NC DEED Book 8, Pages 536-537]. 16

In 1886, Sarah C. Wadsworth is only 6 years old and the only Susannah Wadsworth I am aware of is John H. Wadsworth first wife, Susannah Davis Wadsworth.

A Dying Soldier Request Fulfilled

William Samuel Brock was born 31 August 1896, a son of Mr. & Mrs. Joel Washington Brock. He was married to Cora Lee.

Private William Brock[1], who died in France in November, 1918, was buried at Brock's Mill last Sunday morning at 11 o'clock, the funeral services being conducted by the Rev. F. M. Cannon. Mr. Brock was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joel W. Brock, and was little more than a boy when called to the colors. Mr. Brock saw service on the battlefields and served with distinction as a brave young soldier, but the very day that the armistice was signed he developed influenza, which was followed by pneumonia, and the noble young life soon passed to its heavenly reward. Mr. Brock, before he died, realizing that he could not live, requested that his body be brought back to the old home church yard for burial, and his parents and relatives feel more comforted in the fact that he now sleeps beneath the sod of his own home among his own people. The body, escorted by a young soldier, reached McFarland Saturday afternoon. The casket was draped with the American colors and the large crowd attending the funeral attested the popularity of the young man among his own people. Mr. Brock was not only a brave soldier of his own country, but he had also enlisted under the banner of the Cross and was a soldier of the Master. Indeed, it was said of this noble young man, "He has fought a good fight, he has kept the faith.

Spotlight on: Frederick Rivers

Genealogical research in Chesterfield County, South Caroline is extremely hard due to the loss of pre-civil war records. Almost no newspapers have survived this period and very few from the civil War until 1900. This has resulted in a potpourri of genealogical miss-information especially on the internet.

Today I want to discuss the death of Frederick Rivers. First, I want to state unequivocally there are no tombstone, no estate, and no document that states when Frederick Rivers died.  There are many trees on Ancestry that shows Frederick Rivers died in 1810.

Ancestry.com Family Tree page

There are two documents that's refutes this information. One is the 1820 Census for Chesterfield County.[1]
1820 Census - Ancestry.com

The other documents that proved that Frederick did not die in 1810 is this land deed witnessed by Frederick on 11 December 1814.[2]

Which Source Document Do You Believe?

I came across another dilemma this week while doing some research to better documents some of my sources.  In this case I was researching my maternal line – my Brock Ancestry.

Michael Hezekiah "Mike" Brock is my 1st Grand Uncle. He is the son of Hezekiah Brock and Sarah "Sallie" Morris. He was born on 20 January 1853 in Chesterfield, South Carolina. He had 5 brothers, no sisters. He was the second oldest son, my great Grandfather Benjamin Franklin being the oldest child.

According to Michael Hezekiah Brock estate folder (#860) he died 2 Jan 1926, Chesterfield County, South Carolina. [1]

Then we have the South Carolina death certificate for Michael Brock showing that he died 2 January 1927.[2]

So which death date is correct? The estate file (#860) says that Mike Brock died the 2nd January 1926 while the SC Death certificate states that he died the 2nd January 1927. A search for an obituary resulted negative results.

In situations like this, where we have conflicting information, the Genealogical Proof Standard requires that a reasonably exhaustive search is made of all records and that the conflict be resolved.
Two other secondary sources are available related to birth and death info. They are a cemetery survey book for the county cemeteries and FindaGrave memorial # 60843661.[3] The FindaGrave memorial does not contain a photo of the tombstone but does have the death date recorded as 2 January 1927 and shows that Mike is buried in Zion cemetery in Pageland, South Carolina.

On the other hand, the cemetery survey was a comprehensive inventory of all cemeteries within the county and was completed in the mid -1990's. The Cemetery Survey Book has Mike Brock listed on page 813. The tombstone only contains the year of birth – 1853 and the year of death – 1927. [4]

Not enough information has been found to totally resolve the conflicting information for Mike's death date. Two of the above sources are secondary sources; but, it evident that the FindaGrave info came from the death certificate. For the time being, I personally think the death date is 2 January 1927 but will leave the death date unresolved and open to additional research.

Land Deed Confirms Genealogy Research

I have written previously about the value of land deeds in genealogy. One of my primary lines is the BROCK surname. My Grand Mother was a Brock. All the Brocks in Chesterfield County, South Carolina are descendants of a man named Johan Valentine Brack/Brock.

I have researched to some degree every Brock in Chesterfield County. Today to show you the value of  land deeds we will look at William P. Brock, his wife and family. My research on this family resulted in the following information.

William P. Brock was born about 1827 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.1 He appeared in the census in 1860 & 1870 Census for Chesterfield County, South Carolina.2 3 William died after 1870 and before 1880.

William P. Brock and Easter E. Copeland were married about 1853. Easter E. Copeland, daughter of Archibald Copeland, was born about 1837 in SC. 4 5 Her death date is also unknown but she has not been located after the 1870 Census.

William P. Brock and Easter E. Copeland had the following children:

i.   Wincy E. Brock was born in 1854 in SC. 6 7.  Not found past 1870 Census.
ii.   Peter Preston Brock  Sr., born 2 Feb 1856, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Margaret Jane Sellers; married Elizabeth Jane Eddins; died 8 Feb 1940, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
iii.   William Thomas Brock, born abt 1855, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Margaret Ellen Newby, abt 1880, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 5 Mar 1920, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
iv.   Samuel Stonewall Jackson Brock, born 16 Oct 1858, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Laura Cornelius Teal; died 3 Oct 1942, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
v.   Delia Ardella Brock, born 7 May 1866, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Edward Chambers Teal; died 24 Apr 1942, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
vi.   Joel Washington Brock, born 18 May 1869, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Mary Jane Brock; died 24 Jan 1949, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

So based on my research over the past years William and Easter had 6 children.

Now, let's take a look at the Land Deed I copied today at the Chesterfield Court House from Deed Book 5, Page 520.

This land deed confirmed the research previously completed on this family. The Grandfather Samuel Brock is conveying 100 acres to his six grandchildren and their Father W. P. Brock is acting as agent for his children. Data within the land deed matches information found on this family in the U. S. population census.
