His entire enlisted was served at Sullivan Island with Detached Services in City of Charleston and at Charleston Arsenal under Col. Orr where he worked as a machinist/mechanic.

On 16 February 1865 - William A. McCall was captured at Sampson County, NC. Sent from Newbern NC, by Capt. Perkins, Union Army, to Hart's Island, New York Harbor. He was released 16 June 1865. G.O. #109, dated 6 June 1865.

16 June 1865 - William A. McCall, Pvt., 1st SC Art'y signed an oath of allegiance to the United States, subscribed and sworn to at Hart's Island, NY Harbor on 16 June 1865. 

His place of residence is listed as Chesterfield District, SC. 

His vital statistics are listed as: - light complexion, light hair, blue eyes and 5' 8 1/2" tall.

William Alexander McCall was born about 1830 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 7 Dec 1875 at the age of 45 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina, United States.^[2] He was buried at Old Saint Davids Episcopal Church Cemetery in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

William Alexander McCall and Ann Elizabeth Purvis were married on 6 Feb 1851 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.[3] Anna Elizabeth Purvis, daughter of James Purvis, was born on 1 Oct 1832 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Anna died on 9 Jan 1925 at the age of 92 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina. She was buried on 11 Jan 1925 at Old Saint Davids Episcopal Church Cemetery in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

William Alexander McCall and Ann Elizabeth Purvis had 3 children; 2 boys and a girl before going off to war. Their youngest son was born in 1867, 2 years after the war ended.
