Alsey Clinton Pridgen, was born
10 April 1868 in Nash County, North Carolina to Robert Hilliard
Pridgen and Susan Williams.
The Spanish
American War, a conflict in 1898
between Spain and the United Stated took place between April 25 – August 12, 1898. The 10
week conflict was the results of American intervention in Cuban
independence.
Alsey
C. Pridgen enlisted for service in
the Spanish-American War with Company G,
4th Regiment Virginia Infantry on May 13, 1898 and served
until April 27, 1899 when he was discharged from service.
After
discharge Alsey C. married Annie S. Powell on 17 December 1899[1] in
Warren County, North Carolina. Annie was the daughter of Jere S. Powell.
In 1910, Annie
and two daughters are living with her parents in Norfolk (independent City),
Virginia[2]. The 1910 Census provided
some confusing information . Annie is listed as widowed, which is not
true, and is shown as having 3 daughters 3 living but only two in household -
Gladys Virginia, age 10 and Mary E. Pridgen, age 7.
On 7 January 1922,
Alsey C. Pridgen applies for a pension for his service in the War with Spain
(Spanish-American War). Application number 1460309.
In 1929, Alsey C.
Pridgen is found in the National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers
in Hampton,
Virginia.
In 1930[3] and 1940[4] , Alsey C. Pridgen is
enumerated in the National Soldiers Home in Elizabeth City, Virginia. Even
though his age is misrepresented in 1940 Census, there is no doubt that Alsey
is in the hospital and at the advance age of 72 in 1940 mostly likely unable to
give any pertinent information.
Alsey C. Pridgen death date is unknown. He is buried
in the Pridgen Cemetery[5], Creek, Warren County, North Carolina. His grave is marked
with a Spanish-American Veteran Administration Marker with no dates. The burial
location of his wife and children are unknown at this time.
