Revisit and update of the Lewis L. Freeman Family!

In the book, St. David's Parish, South Carolina Minutes of the Vestry 1768-1832,: Parish Register 1819-1924, by Brent H. Holcomb C.A.L.S., on page 104 we find this statement:1

1853, March 23 at the residence of John Parr, Lewis Freeman and Marr Parr, both of this district.

The statement clearly says that Lewis Freeman married Marr [Mary] Parr and for many years I believed this statement to be TRUE. That is until I met a descendant of Lewis L Freeman and his wife Margaret Frances Purvis.

Back in February I wrote about Lewis and Margaret here:

Lewis L. Freeman was born 27 February 1832, a son of Jesse Freeman and Sarah Jane Davis. He served with his three brothers in the Civil War.2 3

Margaret F. Purvis was first found in the 1850 census in the John Parr household:4

1850 CENSUS, Chesterfield County, South Carolina,  Roll: M432_851;  Image: 221; Page 108B(stamped), Line 28; Dwelling 156, Family 156, John PARR, age 28, Farmer, born in SC; Nancy PARR, age 22, born in SC; William PARR, age 07, born in SC; Mary J. PARR, age 04, born in SC; Henrietta PARR, age 01, born in SC and Margaret F. PERVIS, age 14, born in SC.

That same year she was also found with her Mother Mary McNeil Purvis Rodgers and her step father John Rodgers in DeSoto County, Mississippi.5

1850 CENSUS: Southern Division, DeSoto County, Mississippi; Roll: M432_371; Image: 214, Page: 313A(stamped); Line 20, Dwelling 4, Family 4; John ROGERS, male, age 60, born in VA; Mary ROGERS, female, age 41, born in NC; Henry THOMAS, male, age 21, born in KY; Margaret PURVIS, female, age 13, born in MS; James PURVIS, male, age 11, born in MS; Augustus PURVIS, male, age 9, born in MS; Julia PURVIS, female, age 7, born in MS; Daniel ROGERS, male, age 2, born in MS.

It is believed that Lewis and Margaret married about 1853. They were found as a married couple in the 1870 Census for Rutherford County, North Carolina.6

1870 CENSUS: Rutherfordton, Rutherford County, North Carolina; Roll:  M593_1159; Image: 287; Family History Library Film: 552658, Page: 142A (stamped); Line 4, Dwelling 121, Family 113; Lewis L. FREEMAN, male, age 45, born in SC; Margaret F. FREEMAN, female, age 37, born in SC; Anna E. FREEMAN, female, age 16, born in SC; William FREEMAN, male, age 13, born in SC; Sarah J. FREEMAN, female, age 10, born in SC; Lewis FREEMAN, male, age 6, born in SC; Florah L. FREEMAN, female, 3, born in SC and Nancey L. FREEMAN, female, age 1, born in NC.

Lewis and Nancy had 8 children; 4 sons and 4 daughters. The oldest daughter was Anna E. Purvis, age 16 in the 1870 census. Thus the 23 March 1853 seems to be the correct marriage date but the bride was Margaret F. Purvis not Mary Parr and the wedding did take place in the John Parr household.

The known children of Lewis L. Freeman and Margaret Frances Purvis are:
i. Anna E. Freeman, born 1854 in South Carolina.
ii. William Freeman, born 1857 in South Carolina.

iii. Sarah Jane "Sallie" Freeman, born 5 Jul 1861, Inman, Spartanburg, South Carolina; married David Glen Lawson; died 6 Nov 1944, Asheville, Buncombe, North Carolina

v. Flora L. Freeman, born 5 Sep 1866, Rutherford County, North Carolina; married Richard Francis Daniel; died 25 Nov 1954, Spartanburg County, South Carolina
vi. Nancy Loretta "Nannie" Freeman, born 4 Sep 1869, Rutherford, North Carolina; married John Montjoy; married John Lizah Robbins, 1883; married Marion Columbus Barnett, 1897; married John Calvin Farmer, 1903; died 30 Nov 1953, Laurens, Laurens, South Carolina
vii. John Freeman was born in 1872 in South Carolina. He died after 1900 at the age of 28.
viii. Thomas Clemen Freeman, born 17 Mar 1875, North Carolina; married Naomi Kirby; died 7 Jun 1951, Pacolet, Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Lewis died in 1898 and is buried in the Pacolet First Baptist Church Cemetery, Pacolet, Spartanburg, South Carolina, United States. Margaret Purvis Freeman died 14 July 1930 and she is buried at New Zion; no stone has been found marking her grave.7 8
