Mary Jane White is the daughter of John G. White and his wife Catherine. Mary Jane married Eli W. Brock about 1862 based on the 1900 census where they reported that they had been married 38 years. 

Eli W. Brock and Mary Jane White had the following children:
 
I. Catherine "Katie" Brock, born abt 1866, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Daniel Franklin McLauren.
ii. Mary Hattie Brock, born abt 1869, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Egbert Jesse Bivens, abt 1892, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Henry McCann; died 29 Nov 1949, El Dorado, Union, Arkansas.
iii. Emma Brock was born in Nov 1871 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
iv. Daniel Franklin Brock, born 1 Nov 1874, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Emma Ernestine White, abt 1895, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Marie B. Edwards, abt 1924–1927, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; died 11 Apr 1931, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
v. Lucy Ellen Brock, born 27 Aug 1876, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Emerson Coyt Rivers, abt 1899, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; died 26 Oct 1936, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
vi. Sarah Ann Brock, born 10 Oct 1880, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married William Washington Brock, 1900, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Earl Eugene Teal, 1911–1915; died 12 Sep 1946, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
vii. John Calvin Brock was born on 12 Sep 1882 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 12 Jan 1938 at the age of 55 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina and was buried in the Old Brock's Mill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #66-Carroll Washington Davis

This is a new series of posting, appearing every Sunday, on selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resources if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

When Carroll Washington Davis passed away om 6 February 1863 at the age of 41, he left an extensive estate. In these short years Carroll had twice married and served in the Civil War. 

Born on 20 June 1821, he was a son of William Davis and Julia Thurman. On 17 February 1846, he married Elizabeth Boatwright, daughter of Lewis Boatwright and Elizabeth Rebecca Davis. After the birth of 3 children Elizabeth tragically passed away on 15 December 1853, mostly from childbirth complications. This left Carroll in a predicament; a farmer with three small children, he needed a mother for his children. 

That young lady turned out to be his deceased wife’s baby sister. On 10 August 1854, Carroll and Mary B. Boatwright, daughter of Lewis Boatwright and Elizabeth Rebecca Davis were married. 

Carroll Washington Davis died on 6 February 1863. At the time of his death, Mary was pregnant with her baby due very soon. That baby, Mary Eliza Davis, was born on 22 February 1863. Unfortunately the Mother did not survive, passing away on 22 February 1863, just 16 days after losing her husband. The tragic loss of both Carroll and Mary left 7 young children ranging in age from just born to 16 as orphans. 

Initially, David R. Davis, brother of Carroll Washington Davis was granted Letters of administration upon the Estate. He passed away before closing the estate and Carroll Washington’ son, who had now reached the age of majority, petitioned the Court and was granted “Letters of  Administration de bonis non.” ²

2. That Letters of administration thereon was duly granted by the Ordinary of Chesterfield District to his brother David R. Davis.
3. That said estate has never been settled and David R. Davis has recently died intestate and letters of administration de bonis non on the estate of C. W. Davis are necessary in order to settle said estate and your petitioner is a son of the said C. W. Davis deceased and as such is entitled to said Letters.
Wherefore your petitioner prays that letters administration de bonis non upon said estate be granted to him.

It’s Family Time~Sally Dry and Jacob Kanoy

It was the Will of Johan Martin Dry that identified the husband of his daughter Sarah ‘Sally’ Dry. 

Item  7-- I will and bequeath to my son-in-law Jacob Kanoy the tract of land whereon he now lives containing two hundred and thirty three acres, adjoining George Eagle, Mathias Barringer and others on Bear Creek, but the said Jacob Canoy is to pay to my estate for said lands two years after the death of my wife the sum of three hundred dollars, to him and his heirs fore ever. 

Item 10 --  I will and bequeath to my Daughter Sally Kanoy wife of Jacob Canoy one hundred dollars.     

With the information from the Will surely finding and documenting the lives of Jacob and Sally would be a breeze. But it was not to be; after hours of research I had only found one marriage licensee and two census reports of their existence.

The 1860 census for Iredell County shows Jacob and Sallie with three children in the household:

Sarah CANOY, female, age 64, born in NC
Catharine E. CANOY, female, age 25, born in NC

The absence of Jacob and Sallie in the 1880 Census plus their age as recorded in the 1870 census suggests that the couple passed away sometime between 1870 and 1880. 

If you have information on this couple I would love to hear from you. 

Sallie Dry Kanoy is my 3rd Great grand Aunt.

Chesterfield County Military Veteran~Joseph Benjamin Harding

Military note: Served as a Private, Co. H, 3 Regt Va. Inf.; Spanish American War. ¹

Joseph Benjamin Harding was born and served in the War from Virginia. By 1913 he had migrated south to Cheraw, SC where he wooed and married Willie May McCall, age 20, on 16 February 1913. Willie May was born 18 December 1891, a daughter of James Francis McCall and Sarah Jane Privette. 

Joseph and Willie May had 6 children; 3 sons and 3 daughters. Joseph B. Harding died  from broncho-pneumonia on 29 January 1941 and was buried in Old St. David's Cemetery. His wife, Willie May would survive him by 41 years passing away at the age of 89 om 13 September 1982.
 
Willie May McCall, the wife of Joseph Benjamin Harding, is my 1st cousin twice removed.

Treasure Chest Thursday~William Honeycut to David Simpson, 1832.

I have seen some unusual deeds in my forty years of research but this one is the most unusual one that I have transcribed in all of those years.

William Honeycut to David Simpson
Know all men by these presents that I William Honeycut of the county Anson and state of North Carolina hath Bargained Sold and delivered unto David Simpson him his heirs or afsigns all my property as follows for the consideration of Four Hundred dollars in hand paid by the said David Simpson to the said William Honeycut – One Bay mare and sorrel mair <sic>, Seventeen head of cattle forty head of Hogs eight Head of geese, one Grind stone, one saddle, one Bureau, four tables one shelf Furniture, one loone and gear, 4 pails, 3 pots, 2 ovens all my corn and fodder and Rye straw four Beds and furniture which property I the said William Honeycut do warrant and defend the same to said David Simpson him his heirs and afsigns forever. Given under my hand & seal this 6^th day of March 1832.

John Dry

John Dry was born 8 October 1838, a son of Charles Andrew Dry and Leah Tucker Dry. He was the second born child of 6 children born to Charles and Leah.
 
John served in the Civil War enlisting in Company H, North Carolina 14th Infantry Regiment on 05 May 1861. After returning home from the War he married Orena “Rena” Hatley on 22 March 18698 in Stanly County, North Carolina. 

John Dry died on 25 January 1910 at the age of 71. 

John Dry is my 2nd Cousin 4 times removed.

Elisha Ellis Last Will and Testament
In the name of God, Amen.
I Elisha Ellis being of sound memory and mind And being desirous if disposing of my real and personal property in following manner, do make, publish and declare this to be my last Will and testament. Herby revoking all former wills by me made.
First. I want all my just debts and funeral expenses paid.
Second. All my real estate shall be equally divided between my Sons, John Carlile, Smith Douglas, Marion Richards, Robert Archibald and to my wife Annie Dora, share and share alike, the part allotted to my wife is to belong to her during her natural life, provided she does not marry again, And at her death it shall be equally divided between my sons above named, share and share alike, And it is to be understood that if the said Annie Dora Ellis do marry again her part of my real estate shall at once revert to my sons and to be divided between them as above stated.
Third. It is my will that all of my personal property of every kind and description be equally divided between my sons John Carlile, Smith Douglas, Marion Richards, Robert Archibald and to my wife Annie Dora and daughters Cathleen and Grace Miller, share and share alike.
Forth. It is my will that neither of my heirs herein named to whom my real estate is allotted shall sell their part of the land to any person except to a member of the family until my youngest son then living shall become of age.
Fifth. It is my will that each of my sons herein named shall pay Seventy five dollars to my daughter Grace Miller Ellis, and pay the same amount to my daughter Cathleen, said payments to be made in cash money of the United State <sic>.
Sixth. I hereby constitute and appoint my son J. Carlile Ellis and William A. Clark, Jr. as my Executor to this my last will and testament. To date, I haven’t learned a lot about this Elisha Ellis. His FindAGrave memorial shows that he was born Feb. 29, 1860 and died on Oct. 17, 1909. Looking at the for 1860 Censuses for Chesterfield County has this entry.

The Petition of Nancy J. Davis shows to the Court:
1. That Jesse D. Pittman died intestate in the County of Chesterfield, State of South Carolina, on the 6^th day of May 1907, leaving as his heirs at law and distributees his wife Sarah (Mary) F. Pittman who is insane and confined in the State Hospital for the Insane, and the following children to wit,
Your petitioner Nancy J. Davis, the wife of C. W. Davis, who is of age and resides in the County of Chesterfield , State aforesaid, and Thetis Pittman and Nettie Pittman daughters of Jesse D. Pittman who reside in the County who are 16 and 14 years of age respectively, and John Pittman and Kenneth Pittman and William Pittman his sons who reside in the state of North Carolina.
II. That the said Jesse D. Pittman left a small personal estate, to wit, about two hundred dollars’ worth, and a growing crop which under the law goes as Assets into the hands of the administrator (a one-horse crop), and the estate of the said Jesse D. Pittman has a claim against the S. A. L. Railway for damages for the death of the said Jesse D. Pittman.
Wherefore your petitioner preys that she be appointed as administrator of said estate.

It’s Family Time~John Allen Huneycutt

John Allen Huneycutt was born on 19 Jan 1864 in Stanly County, North Carolina. He was the only son of James W. Huneycutt and Sarah Elizabeth Page Huneycutt. James Allen Huneycutt had 4 siblings. Between 1870 and 1880, James Allen parents moved their family of 5 children from Stanly County, North Carolina to Chesterfield County, South Carolina, a distance of about 46 miles south of their present home. 

Both James Allen and his Father James W. were farmers. The 1900 census shows that James Allen married a young lady by the name of Lizzie, which is most likely Elizabeth, in 1892.

Note: After many years of research I have not found Lizzie's maiden name. There doesn’t seem to be a Death Certificate for her; but, her tombstone shows that she died 18 December 1944. 
 
James Allen and Lizzie had two children; one died young, a daughter Azalee, age 10, is listed in the 1920 census. But, in 1930, this daughter is shown as adopted.

John Allen Huneycutt died on 21 Nov 1932 at the age of 68 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina and was buried on at Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
 
His wife, Lizzie W. was born on 22 Jan 1869. She died on 18 Dec 1944 at the age of 75. She also is buried at Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery. 
 
If anyone has any information about this couple and their adopted daughter Azalee Huneycutt, born about 1910-11, I would love to hear from you.
 
James Allen Huneycutt is my Great Grand Uncle.

Sgt. John Mills was the son of Charlie Ross Mills and Mary Annie Jordan. he enlisted into the US Army on 26 October 1943. He was a member of  the 8th Engineers, C Battalion, 1st Calvary Division (Infantry).

Sgt. Mills also served in  Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. 

Sgt. Mills is buried in Pageland, South Carolina at the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.

Alexander J. and James Pervis/Purvis; Did These Two Men Survive The Civil War?

During the past week I did some Civil War research  on the men of Chesterfield County, SC and specifically Alexander J. Purvis, son of William and Charlotte Vaughn Purvis. William and Charlotte had at least three and maybe four sons of age to serve during the War. Compounding these statistics is the fact that in 1900 Charlotte Vaughn Purvis stated that she had 15 children, 7 living. To date I have only identified 12 of these 15 children.
Within the military records of A. J. Pervis on Fold3 is this document.¹

Alexander J. Pervis/Purvis was born in 1842. he is listed in his parent household in both the 1850 and the 1860 censuses. When the Civil was broke out in January 1861 he was 19 years of age. He was 20 years old when he enlisted on November 1st 1862. ^{3 4}

The document above was interesting in that Alexander J. and James Pervis were in the same unit. Initially, I thought maybe they were siblings but further research shows that James was 18 years older than Alexander much too old to be a sibling. So who is James Purvis?

James Pervis is most likely the James Purvis in the household of Jane Pervis in 1850 and 1860.  ^{5 6}

He married Nancy Cranford on 18 April 1850.⁷

MARRIAGE: April 18th, 1850, At my residence in Cheraw, James PURVIS to Nancy CRANFORD, all of this district. "St. David's Parish, South Carolina, Minutes of the Vestry 1768-1832, Parish Register 1819-1924, Brent H. Holcomb, C.A.L.S., 1979, Southern Historical Press, Greenville, SC, Page 103".

Ironically, I can find no trace of Alexander or James beyond the Civil War. There is no indication they died in the Civil War but neither man can be found in the Census after the Civil War. 

Broken Fortunes by Randolph Kirkland on page 283 does show a Pvt. James Purvis, Killed in Action at Drury’s Bluff,  Virginia on 16 May 1864. He was assigned to Co. “E”, 21st SCV. Also Hagood’s, “War of Succession”, page 408. ^{8 9}

Fred Mark Rivers was born 17 June 1902 in Sumter, Sumter County, South Carolina. He was a son of William James and Sarah “Sallie” Spears Rivers and a grandson of Mark Rivers and Annie Parker.

You are hereby required to appear at the Court of probate, to be holden at Chesterfield Court House for Chesterfield County, on the 27^th day of December, A. D. 1872, to shew cause, if any you can. why the Real Estate of John Ellis deceased, Situate in Said County on Bear Creek, bounding lands of A. M. Tucker, Elisha Ellis, Sr., W. B. Davis and others and containing four hundred [400] acres more or lefs Should not be divided or Sold, allotting to the Said heirs at law the Share or Shares to which each one is entitled according to their respective legal rights.

Rosa Ann Thurman Gainey died on 2 October 1883 leaving her 3 children and grandchildren; children of her daughter Susannah “Susie” Gainey deceased wife of  Capt. William B. Davis.
Rosa Ann’s husband James P. Gainey had died about September 1850 in Barbour County, Alabama. After the death of her husband, though pregnant with another child, Rosa Ann came back home to Chesterfield County, South Carolina where her daughter, Susannah was born on 10 May 1851.
Phillip James Hurst was named Executor of the Estate. He was the husband of Rosa Ann daughter Mary Ann Gainey.

The petition of Phillip J. Hurst respectfully shows to this court;
1. That Rosana Gainey a resident of the county and State aforesaid departed this life on or about the second day of October A.D. 1883, leaving a small personal and some real estate and letters of administration upon said personally is necessary in order that said estate may be settled.
2. That the intestate left as her heirs children and grandchildren to wit: Mary A. Hurst. A daughter of (inserted), the wife of your petitioner, Lewis J. Gainey, a son of residing somewhere in the state of Texas, Jane Hancock, a daughter, wife of R. F. M. Hancock and James Davis, William Davis, Minnie Davis and Lillian Davis who are grand children of the intestate and children of a daughter of intestate called Susanna the said Susanna having intermarried with William B. Davis, Junior and pre-deceased her mother several years.
Wherefore your petitioner prays that letters of administration upon said estate be granted him.

It’s Family Time~William James Rivers

William James Rivers was born 6 October 1849 in Chesterfield South Carolina, a son of Mark Rivers and his  wife Annie Parker. William James joined an older sister Mary Ann born two years earlier in May 1847. 

In January 1864, William James, age 14, and his six sibling lost their Mother. Their Father, Mark Rivers was a soldier in Co. B 26th Regiment, SC Volunteers.
In early 1880’s Mark and his new wife Caroline moved from Chesterfield County across the Pee Dee Rivers to Marlboro County. It was there that William James Rivers met Sarah Ella Spears daughter of  Harris N. Spears and Mary Ann Frazier.
On 20 Dec 1883 William James Rivers and Sarah Ella Spears were united in Holy Matrimony in Bennettsville, Marlboro County, South Carolina. 

William James Rivers and Sarah Ella Spears had the following children:

I. Willie Harris Rivers was born on 2 May 1890 in Bennettsville, Marlboro, South Carolina. He died on 19 Apr 1913 at the age of 22 in Bennettsville, Marlboro, South Carolina. Unmarried
ii. Porter Rivers, born 25 Aug 1895, Bennettsville, Marlboro, South Carolina; married Ruth Helen Allen, 4 Apr 1923, Sumter, Sumter, South Carolina; died 2 Nov 1973, Sumter, Sumter, South Carolina.
iii. Edgar Spears Rivers, born 6 May 1899, Sumter, Sumter, South Carolina; married Pearl Davis, 9 Oct 1931, Summerton, South Carolina; died 11 Sep 1993, Florence, Florence, South Carolina.
iv. Fred Mark Rivers was born on 17 Jun 1902 in Sumter, Sumter, South Carolina. He died on 16 Jun 1968 at the age of 65 in Wahiawa, Honolulu, Hawaii. FindAGrave Memorial# 94940116

                                A paper writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Esther Dry is this day … in open Court for probate by Lawson W. Dry which is in the following means & figures
“Know all men by these presents that I Esther Dry in the county of Cabarrus and state of North Carolina being infirm tho of sound and disposing memory mind and memory do make and publish this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me at any time heretofore made and as to my worldly goods Estate and all of the property real personal or mixed of which I shall die seized and posefsed or to which I shall been titled at the time of my decease I devise, bequeath and dispose thereof in the manner following to wit.
I give devise and bequeath to my son Tobias Dry fifty cents to be paid to him by my executor herein after named Six months after my decease to have and to hold the same to him his executors administrators and afsigns forever.
I give devise and bequeath to my son P. W. Dry fifty cents for him to hold his heirs and afsigns forever to be paid to him as above mentioned.
I give devise and bequeath to my son John Dry fifty cents for him to his heirs and afsigns forever to be paid to him or his heirs as above mentioned.
I give devise and bequeath to my son H. W. Dry fifty cents for him to hold to his heirs and afsigns forever to be paid to him as above mentioned.
I give devise and bequeath to my son Lawson W. Dry  all of my land and house thereon and to his bennefits <sic> derived there from for him to hold to his heirs and afsigns forever situated and lying as follows:   Beginning a No Abraham Dry corner then N 57 W 200 poles to a BC N 62 W 23 22 poles to a stake then to 40 W 27 poles to a P. O. S 52 E 121 poles to a W. O. then South83 poles to a B. O. runs S 83 E 34 poles to w willow Oak runs N 23 E 51 poles to a stake Then S 51 E 51 poles to w pine knot in said Dry line then N 20 E 61 poles to the beginning corner containing Eighty acres lying in County and State above mentioned,
I give and bequeath to my daughter Sarah Dry fifty cents for her to hold for her heirs and afsigns forever. 
I give and bequeath to my daughter Catherine Dry fifty cents for her to hold to her heirs and afsigns forever. 
And lastly I do nominate and appoint my said son Lawson W. Dry to be the Executor of this my last will & Testament  Subscribed my name and  affixed my seal this the sixth day of June one thousand eight hundred and seventy-three.

The Last Will & Testament of Esther Melchor Dry, deceased widow of Solomon Dry, was admitted for probate on Oct. 6, 1878 in Open Court, Cabarrus County, NC, and ordered to be recorded and filed. ²
Esther Melchor and Solomon Dry were married on 11 Dec 1821 in Cabarrus County.
Solomon Dry and Esther Melchor had the following children:
i. Tobias Augustus Dry, born 22 Sep 1822, Cabarrus County, North Carolina
ii. Philip Wiley Dry was born on 22 May 1824.
iii. Sarah Ann Dry was born about 1828. 
iv. Henry W. Dry was born about 1829. 
v. Mary Catherine Dry was born about 1833. 
vi. Christena Dry, born 5 Aug 1834.
vii. Margaret Dry was born about 1835.
viii. John Dry, born abt 1836, Cabarrus County, North Carolina.
ix. Lawrence W. Dry, born abt 1840, Cabarrus County, North Carolina.
All of the nine children, named above, are mentioned in the Will above or signed the Will in the case of Christine Bost with the exception of Margaret Dry. I have not found any mention of Margaret beyond the 1850 census and believed that she passed away before 1860.
