Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #112–Cameron Adams

This is a new series of posting, appearing every Sunday, on selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resources if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
Today we will be looking at the following Estate folders:

Folder #112
Cameron Adams 1

This estate folder begins at image #614 and ends with image #631. (images 614-631)

Cameron Adams and  Jane Copeland were married about 1830 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Over the next 14 years (1830-1854) Cameron and Jane would have a family of 11 children; 6 sons and 5 daughters.

Between 1854 and 1860, Cameron passed away. I have not been successful in finding an exact death date for Cameron or his wife Jane Copeland.

The “Adams Family Cemetery”  has 12 markers within the cemetery. None are for Cameron or Jane Adams.

There was a Probate of the Estate of Cameron Adams and it can be found here:

There are some clues to his death date but again no specific date of death is recorded.

First is Image 621:
This image, dated 1861, is a document showing that Alfred M. Lowry had surveyed the lands of the estate of Cameron Adams for $10.28.

1860 Census:
The 1860 Census for Chesterfield County shows that Cameron is no longer present in the household in 1860. The census was enumerated on 16 July 1860. Cameron absent from the Census suggests that he was deceased prior to 16 July 1860.

1860 Household of Jane Adams

Susannah E. Adams Grigg
The death certificate for Susannah E. Adams, the last known child of Cameron Adams and Jane Copland, shows that she was born on 20 May 1854.

This document suggests that her Dad was last known to be alive about September 1853. I think its safe to say that Cameron Adams died between Sept 1853 and 16 July 1860.

There were several minor children involved here and if Gen. Sherman had not burned the Courthouse in 1865 there would be Orphan Court records that would narrow down or list the exact date that Cameron Adams passed away. If you have any information on the death of Cameron Adams I would love to hear from you.

Read the probate record. There’s some very interesting information contained within.

  1. In the jacket are some pages with listing of notes of which are due to be paid into the estate. One is dated 5 Jan 1857 and due 1 Jan 1858 and is TO "Cam Adams".
There are several others dated 11 Feb 1858 with due dates of 11 months after that date and the are TO "T C Adams and Jane Adams Adstr's". Notes would not be made to Administrators unless there had come a need for an estate to be administered. Therefore Cam Adams died between 5 Jan 1857 and 11 Feb 1858. I suspect the existence of several notes to the Administrators is for the sale of property of the estate "on credit".
