Treasure Chest Thursday~ Marriage of Phillip May and Susannah Lewis

One of my favorite genealogical resources is the county Land Deeds. I have been amazed at the data I have found in land deeds and their ability to aid immensely in the reconstruction of families and sometimes generations. During the past week while researching a connection between my Graves grandparents and Thomas Lewis I came upon this deed from Anson County, North Carolina. The deed is recorded in Deed Book Z, page 585 but the instrument IS NOT a Land Deed; it’s a Power of Attorney and this Power of Attorney has a brief statement about the marriage of Phillip May to  Susannah Lewis, daughter of Thomas Lewis. 

The power of attorney was related to the division of property of Thomas Lewis, deceased. Thomas Lewis died on 12 January 1836.

206. Anson County NC Superior Court, Spring 1837. Thomas Hubbard and wife Nancy vs. Moses Moore and wife Elizabeth and others. That Lewis Melton & wife Rebecca, Harmon Adams and wife Rachel, Lewis Graves and wife Miriam, Phillip May and wife Susanna, Jonathan May and wife Catherine, Willie Mangrum and Thomas Lewis defendants. Petition of Real Estate.

I have only transcribed that portion of the document related to the marriage of Phillip May to Susannah Lewis.

MARRIAGE: 

State of Tennessee}

Stewart County} This day personally appeared before me Daniel LEWIS, Peyton R. ATKINS an acting Justice of the Peace in and for said county and on his oath did say that he was personally acquainted with Phillip MAY and Susannah MAY and that Susannah MAY is the daughter of Thomas LEWIS of Anson County of North Carolina and that the said Phillip MAY did marry her in Stewart County, Tennessee. Sworn to and subscribed before me this 23rd day of November 1837.
