Lavisa Thurman Boatwright Gulledge~A Southern Pioneer

Lavisa “Vicey/Vicy” Thurman was borne abt 1794 to John Thurman and his wife Anne Perkins of the  Chesterfield District, South Carolina.

As a young lady of 22, she married Drury Boatwright son of Lewis Boatwright and Sarah Lundy in the year of 1816. Her husband Drury served in the war of 1812. After the war, he came home and continue to farm and raise a family of four known children's; two sons and two daughters.

The exact death date of Drury Boatwright is unknown but we do know that he died shortly before 23 October 1832. 

In Chesterfield, at Blakeley’s Store, John W. Hudson, vice Murdoch Ray, removed; At Archibald Johnson’s, Hector M’Neil, vice Drury Boatwright, deceased;….

Based on these minutes from the House & Senate Meeting on 23-24 October 1832, we know that Drury Boatwright died before this date. We are still missing an EXACT date for his death.  We also know that he was alive at the enumeration of the 1830 Census.

After the death of Drury, Lavisa married Obediah Gulledge on 25 June 1840. Obediah, son of William and Basheba Watts was twice widowed when he and Lavisa married in 1840.  They jointly signed a marriage contract before the ceremony took place. It can be read here:

Obediah Gulledge died 25 June 1963 leaving Lavisa his widow. Lavisa would never remarried living the rest of her life as a widow. In 1880, she can be found in the household of her son-in-law Malachi “Mally” Rivers, husband of Sarah Ann Boatright, daughter of Levisa and Drury Boatwright. 

Lavisa Thurman Boatwright Gulledge died 20 December 1882. Lavisa and  Drury are buried in the Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
