It’s Family Time~Ellen F. Previtte

Ellen F. Previtte was born abt 1848 a daughter of William Previtte and his wife Catherina [LNU]. Ellen can be found in her parents home in the 1850 and 1860 Census. In 1860, she is 12 years of age and her parents are believed to have died in the early 1860’s. She was also listed in the home of her brother John Washington Previtte and his wife Elizabeth “Bette”Davis.  

Ellen became elusive after the 1860 Census and was not found again until the 1900 unless the E. Previtte, Female, age 28 is her in this 1870 Census. This doesn’t match her said birth year of 1848. If she was born in 1848 she would be 22 years old not twenty-eight.

the 1900 Census was a SHOCKER. Not only did Ellen F. Previtte reappear but she was found living with a daughter Hattie E. Previtte born December 1873 and three grandchildren. No marriage record has been found for Ellen F. or her daughter Hattie E. before this 1900 Census; but that is about to change. Both women lists themselves as SINGLE in the 1900 Census.

On 21 October 1903, Hattie E. Previtte and Gilliam Philmore Carpenter, Sr. were married in Wadesboro, Anson County, North Carolina. Gilliam Philmore Carpenter was a married man; he had married Sarah Catherine Gaddy and had two sons. However, he and Sarah Catherine had recently divorced. He and wife Sallie Carpenter were divorced in 1898, per the Wadesboro Messenger Intelligencer issue of 3 Nov 1898.

MARRIED IN TEN MINUTES AFTER DIVORCED

Philmore Carpenter, of Gulledge township, procured license to marry Hattie Privette, also of Gulledge township, Tuesday. The license was issued by Register of Deeds Moore about ten minutes after a decree, divorcing Carpenter from a former wife, was signed by Judge Cook. Carpenter has been divorced from two wives. Wadesboro Messenger 
He and wife Sallie Carpenter were divorced in 1898, per the Wadesboro Messenger Intelligencer issue of 3 Nov 1898.
 
He and wife Mattie Carpenter were divorced in 1903 and 10 minutes later he married Hattie Privette, per the Wadesboro Messenger Intelligencer article dated 6 Nov 1903.

In 1910, the first census in which Hattie and Philmore appear they have 4 additional CARPENTER children plus her 4 PREVITTE children. All the children are using the Surname CARPENTER; the PREVITT children having dropped their PREVITT surname.

Hattie, we presumed has informed the Census taker that she has been married 7 years, has 8 children of which 7 are living. Those children in the 1910 household are:

Mary M. CARPENTER [PREVITT], Step-Daughter, age 17, born in NC; Eligah CARPENTER [PREVITT], Step-Son, age 14, born in NC; Bennie CARPENTER, Son, age 5, born in NC; David CARPENTER, Son, age 3, born in NC; Robert CARPENTER, Son, age 2, born in NC and Lester CARPENTER, Son, age 4/12, born in NC.

Not listed but named elsewhere are:

1. James Douglas PREVITT, b. April 1888
2. I. T. PREVITT, b. October 1898 [WWI Draft Reg. Card/].

In October 1903 while applying for a marriage License Hattie Previtt stated that both her father and Mother were deceased. The marriage licensee narrows down the time period for the death of Ellen F. Previtte, she was alive on 14 June 1900 (1900 Census) and died before 21 Oct 1903 (Marriage of Hattie to Philmore Carpenter).

Ellen F. Previtte died between 14 June 1900 (1900 Census) and 21 Oct 1903 (Marriage of Hattie to Philmore Carpenter). Her exact death date has not been found. No grave site has been found.

Ellen F. Previtte is my 2nd Great Grand Aunt.
