The Wife of James F. Purvis is not Sarah Garrard James

Sarah Garrard James Does not Exist but there is a Sarah Garrard that married James Purvis thus becoming Sarah Garrard Purvis.

This marriage took place in Fleming County, Kentucky on 31 March 1808.

Today there are hundreds of on-line trees showing Sarah Garrard James married to James F. Purvis of Chesterfield, South Carolina.

The Wife of James F. Purvis, born 1760 in Chesterfield, SC; died abt Nov 1836 in Mississippi is Unknown.

Back in May 2011 I posted the following post on GenForum an active Genealogy message board at that time:
https://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/purvis/2047/

There is a lot of misinformation on the Wife of James F. Purvis. Most of this is caused by sloppy research and posting of misinformation on-line.
There is a Kentucky marriage licensee for a James Purvis to a Sarah Garrard.
Spouse 1:       Garrard, Sarah
Spouse 2:       Purvis, James
Marriage Date:       31 Mar 1808
Marriage Location:       Kentucky
Fleming County

Source Information:
Dodd, Jordan. Kentucky Marriages, 1802-1850 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 1997. Original data: Electronic transcription of marriage records held by the individual counties in Kentucky.

James F. Purvis, Sr. b. abt 1760 DID NOT marry Sarah Garrard James

The KY Marriage Licensee shows A SARAH GARRARD marrying a JAMES PURVIS; but he was not the James F. Purvis, Sr. that migrated from Chesterfield County, SC to Clarke County, Alabama and then on to Rankin County, MS where he died in November 1836. [Probate File; Probate Court, Rankin County, MS and RANKIN COUNTY, MS BOND AND WILL BOOK I, Page 52: Estate of James Purvis, dec'd. John Purvis, W. Purvis, W.B. Word, Charles A. Fulsom, bond $1,400.00.28 Nov. 1836. Condition:John Purvis and George W. Purvis, Admr's. make an inventory of estate].

James F. Purvis, born about 1760 in SC and Died in November 1836 was the son of John Purvis and Sarah Johnston/Johnson. THE NAME OF HIS WIFE IS NOT KNOWN. His brother was Gilbert Purvis who married Effica Howell. James, Gilbert and several other Purvis families migrated from Chesterfield, SC about 1818. They are not listed in the 1820 Census for Chesterfield County, SC. James and his family are listed in 1800 and 1810 and I can assure you he was married long before the 1808 Kentucky Marriage.

1800 Census;

James PURVIS, age 26-44

3 Male 0-10
1 Male 10-15
1 Male 26-44 (James)
2 Female 0-10
1 Female 16-25
4 Slaves

1810 Census:
James PURVIS Sr., age 26-44

2 Male 0-10
1 Male 16-25
1 Male 26-44 (James, Sr)
2 Female 0-10
1 Female 10-15
1 Female 26-44

Based on these two censuses we can see that James was married and had 6 children prior to 1800 and statistics points to a likely marriage date of about 1788-89. This is based on the assumption that the oldest female in the household is James Purvis wife.

Again we know that James is in SC and that he is married much earlier that 1808 and has a growing family in both 1800 and 1810. There is no record of James Purvis leaving South Carolina until he migrated with his brother about 1818-1820

Just a short look on the Internet shows that Sarah Garrard married James Purvis on March 31, 1808 in Fleming county, Kentucky, son of William Purvis and Jane Burk. These Purvis were from Culpepper County, Virginia.

Another website showing basically same information.

http://www.vangundy.net/familytree/GP/fam/fam01003.html [NO LONGER ACTIVE]

And I have no idea how SARAH GARRARD became SARAH GARRARD JAMES. I would suggest contacting one of the individuals posting this information. There are at least 7 public trees out there with this wrong information. [End of GenForum Post].

These 7 trees in 2011 have now morphed into hundreds. For the life of me I don't understand placing such misinformation in a personal tree. If you are not going to abide by the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS) when creating and maintaining a tree; why do it at all? Your time could be better used doing something for your community.

If your line is William Purvis and Jane Burk of Virginia then James Purvis and Sarah Garrard belongs in your tree.

If your line is James F. Purvis, b. 1760 Chesterfield County South Carolina; parents John Purvis and Sarah Johnston then  please remove Sarah Garrard as the wife of James; his wife is unknown. If you have PROOF otherwise, I’m all ears. Send me an email.

Parents of George Washington Purvis (1825-1861) Identified.

For many years George Washington Purvis, his wife and family have lingered within my genealogical database waiting for me to identify his parents and connect these together as a family. Many have tried and failed but if you really want to see some amazing fiction take a look at the 80+ individuals that has his parent as John Purvis and Elizabeth Lovett.

Based on the evidence below it is my conclusion that John Purvis and Mary Parks are the parents of George Washington Purvis.

First, A Probate Decree concerning the Estate of John W. Purvis. Said decree shows that John W. Purvis is the father of George Washington Purvis and the grandfather of his children. It also shows that Martha A. [Franklin] Purvis is the mother of the Children and thus wife of George Washington Purvis.

Second, the 1840 census for John Purvis in Rankin County, MS shows a 14 year old male in John's household.

Name: John Purvis

Home in 1840 (City, County, State): Rankin, Mississippi

Free White Persons - Males - 5 thru 9: 1 -- unidentified

Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 14: 1 -- George Washington Purvis

Free White Persons - Males - 20 thru 29: 1 -- Clemmons Purvis

Free White Persons - Males - 40 thru 49: 1-- John Purvis

Free White Persons - Females - 5 thru 9: 2 -- Lucy Ann Purvis, 1 unidentified

Free White Persons - Females - 10 thru 14: 2 - Martha Purvis

Free White Persons - Females - 40 thru 49: 1 - Mary [Parks] Purvis

Slaves - Males - Under 10: 1

Persons Employed in Agriculture: 3

Free White Persons - Under 20: 6

Free White Persons - 20 thru 49: 3

Total Free White Persons: 9

I believe that I have identified 7 of the 9 individuals in this household in 1840.

Third, The 1866 Mississippi State Census shows Mrs. Martha A. Purvis as a close neighbor of John Purvis and his boys. I believe Martha's presence and close proximity, after her husband's death in 1861, is indicative of the close family relationship of the Purvis family and suggest a familial relationship between Martha A. Purvis, John Purvis, Alexander Purvis and Clemmons Purvis.

If John W. Purvis had twelve heirs-at-law as suggested in the probate docket, then I am missing some children.

Fourth, Rankin County Deed Book 24, Page 299 & 300 lists the heirs-at-law- of John W. Purvis. This Deed was for the sale of John P/W Purvis and Mary Park Purvis land and settlement of the estate. The Deed reference John Purvis’ Land and also names his children and Grandchildren plus daughter-in-law Martha Adaline Franklin Purvis as heirs-at-law.

It’s Family Time~Richard and Rebecca Sellers Family

Very little is known of Richard and Rebecca Sellers family. Richard was born about 1792 in Chesterfield County, SC, a son of Hardy Sellers and Mary Cook, daughter of Abram Cook and Feebe Mastin.

He married a young lady by the name of Rebecca about 1814 in Chesterfield County. After the birth of two children, Phebe E. in 1815 and Frances “Fanny” Sellers in 1817 the family moved to  Perry County, Tennessee's where they can be found in the 1820 Census.

The 1820 Census Family Composition is:

1 male 24-44 – Richard Sellers

1 female – 16-25 –Wife – Rebecca [Maiden Name Unknown] Sellers

1 Male under 10 – Son, Hardy Sellers

3 Female under 10 – daughters, Phebe E.; Frances “Fanny” and unknown Sellers

In the next Census for 1830 we find that the family has moved to Wayne County, Tennessee and has grown from 6 free whites to nine (9); two new sons and a daughter.

The 1830 Census Family Composition is:

1 male 30-39 – Richard Sellers

1 female – 30-39 –Wife – Rebecca [LNU]

2 males under 5 – John, Unknown

1 male 5-9 -

1 male 10-14 – Son, Hardy

1 female 5-9 – Daughter, Jane

2 females 10-14 – daughters, Phebe E.; Frances “Fanny”

Up until this point we know the family composition but we are missing two children, both males, one under the age of 5 and one between the age of 5 – 9. It quite possible these children either died as infants or at a very young age.

Looking at a Tennessee county map we can see that even though Richard and Rebecca had moved that they hadn’t moved very far. But, they have not yet settled down into their finial resting place and in 1836 and 1839 we find them in a Carroll County, Tennessee tax List.

1836 Tax List, Carroll County, TN – Richard Sellers

Their rambling days are not over and the urge to moved to greener pastures has bitten again. This time Richard and Rebecca are headed for Mississippi. There in 1845 Mississippi Census we find the family enumerated in Tishomingo County. The 1845 Census shows 6 males and 6 females in the household.

There in the 3rd Column, Line 9 we find Richard Sellers and next we have Richard Sellers family entry for the 1850 Population Census:

I have identified 9 children for this Couple. If the family consisted of 6 males including the Father and 6 females including the Mother then I am missing one son. Mostly likely the one under 2 in the 1830 census.

The children I have identified for Richard and Rebecca Sellers are:

        i.    Pheba E, Sellers, born abt 1815, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Jesse F. Beelar, 25 Aug 1847, Grainger, Tennessee.

ii.    Frances "Fanny" Sellers was born about 1817 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
iii.    Hardy Sellers, born 1820, Perry County, Tennessee; married Matilda  Springer, 30 Oct 1856, Alcorn County, Mississippi; married Nancy Johnson, 7 Dec 1845, Alcorn County, Mississippi; died 22 Mar 1884.
iv.    Jane Sellers was born about 1821 in Tennessee.
         v.    John Sellers, born 4 Mar 1828, Tennessee; married Lucy [LNU]; died 28 Dec 1916, Clarksdale, Ms.
vi.    Henrietta Sellers was born about 1832 in Tennessee.
