It’s Family Time~James Jackson Patrick & Rose Ann Purvis Family


James Jackson Patrick, born 16 Apr 1816 in Colleton County, South 
Carolina was a son of Luke Patrick and Gracie Heaton.

Rose Ann Purvis born about 1811 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina was the daughter of James Purvis, Sr. and his unknown wife.

The Purvis family migrated from Chesterfield about 1818 and arrived in Mississippi in the early 1820’s. The Patrick Family left Colleton County and arrived in Mississippi between 1830 and 1840. 

James Jackson Patrick and Rose Ann Purvis were married 20 October 1837 in Rankin County, Mississippi. James was a farmer like his father. Rose Ann’s father, James Purvis, Sr and his brother Gilbert Purvis were also farmers.

Before the early death of Rose Ann Purvis, she and her husband James Jackson would raise a family of eight children; five sons and 3 daughters.

The children of James Jackson Patrick and Rose Ann Purvis are:

i. James Monroe Patrick was born on 19 Dec 1840. He died on 8 Apr 1923 at the age of 82 in Montgomery, Alabama.

ii. Rebecca Patrick, born 13 Dec 1839, Rankin, Mississippi; married John Wesley Bowman, abt 1857; married Unknown Walters; married Asberry A. Sevitzer, 3 Aug 1872, Leflore County, Mississippi; married George W. Carr, 30 Oct 1886, Sunflower County, Mississippi; died 1 May 1906.

iii. Mary S. Patrick was born about 1842. She died after 1880 at the age of 38 in Pelahatchie, Rankin, Mississippi.

iv. Preston Patrick was born on 18 Dec 1846 in Rankin County, Mississippi, United States. He died on 3 Feb 1865 at the age of 18 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio.

v. Dolphin Patrick, born 14 Oct 1848; married Ellen Elizabeth  Thorne; died 8 Mar 1892.

vi. Margaret A. Patrick, born 16 Mar 1851; married Joseph Baxter White, 3 Feb 1867; died 13 Jan 1934.

vii. William W. Patrick, born 14 Mar 1852, Rankin County, Mississippi; married Catherine H., abt 1873, Rankin County, Mississippi; died 16 Aug 1924.

viii. Alvin Patrick was born on 11 Jan 1855. He died on 25 Dec 1937 at the age of 82 in Rankin, Mississippi.

The death of his wife Rose Ann in 1862, left James Jackson, a farmer, in dire straits with several children under the age of twenty-one.

James Jackson Patrick married Catharine Summers sometime between 1862 and 1870. No known children were born of this union.

James Jackson Patrick passed away on  20 June 1882. He and his two wives are buried in Antioch Cemetery, Rufus, Rankin County, Mississippi.
