52 Cousins~Ann E. Freeman Hall and Her Husband, Joseph Hall

Ann E. Freeman first shows up in the 1850 Census with her parents Jesse and Jane (nee Sarah Jane Davis) Freeman and some of her older siblings.

Ann was an infant age 2/12 in 1850 Census taken on 28 Oct 1850, making her born in August 1850. In the 1900 Census, Ann states that she was born May 1849.

1850 CENSUS: Chesterfield, Chesterfield County, South Carolina;  Roll  M432_851; Image: 273, Page: 134B/135A; Line 33, Dwelling 560, Family 560;  Jesse FREEMAN, age 46, farmer, born in SC; Jane FREEMAN, age 45, born in SC; Lewis FREEMAN, age 18, born in SC; Jane FREEMAN, age 16, born in SC;  William FREEMAN, age 14, born in SC; Jesse FREEMAN, age 12, born in SC;  Christian FREEMAN, age 11, female, born in SC; John FREEMAN, age  8, born in SC; Effa FREEMAN, age 2, female, born in SC; Sarah A. FREEMAN, age 2, female, born in SC; Ann E. FREEMAN, age 2/12, born in SC.

On the 1870 Census, Ann is listed as age 25 with a son J. A. FREEMAN, male, age 8, born in SC. J. A. Freeman died before 1880. In the 1900 Census she stated that she was a widow, mother of 9 children of which 8 were living.

In 1873, Ann E. Freeman had another son John Wesley Freeman borne March 1873.

Sometime in 1874, Ann E. Freeman married Joseph Hall; age unknown but in 1880 he is listed as age 20. If this is true he was 14 when he married Ann E. Freeman.

In 1880, Ann E. Freeman is Ann Hall, age 30 and her husband Joseph Hall is age 20; the two Freeman boys, Jesse [Coleman] and John Wesley are shown as stepsons and Joseph and Ann have added 3 more children to the family, Barney, Nancy and Calvin Hall. The 2 surviving Freeman boys plus J.A Freeman along with Barney, Nancy and Calvin Hall makes 6 children and the last two, Joanna and Henry Thomas make 8 of the nine children being identified.

In July 1881, Jesse Freeman; father of Ann E. (Freeman) Hall passes away.

On 25 Oct 1881, a Bill of Complaints was filed against the estate of Jesse Freeman by his Heirs-at-Law. Ann Hall wife of Joseph Hall is named as one of the daughters of Jesse within that Bill of Complaint.

“II. That the said Jessie Freeman left Surviving him as his heirs at law and Distributees His Widow Mary Freeman and the following children to wit:

William Freeman Louis Freeman Christine Turnage the wife of Robert Turnage, Ann Hall the wife of Joseph Hall Elizabeth Poston the wife of Elisha Poston and your Complainants Mary Ann Wadsworth and Effie Purvis and also and <sic> granddaughter named Temple Parr, the wife of Samuel Parr who is a child of a daughter of testor named Jane  which said daughter of testator had been intermarried with one Benjamin Brock and predeceased her said father Jesse Freeman.”

By 1885, Joseph and Ann have added two more children to the family, a daughter, Joanne and a son, Henry Thomas Hall.

A confusing aspect of this family is that the male Hall children, all at some time in their life were known by the surname Freeman rather than Hall their ethnicity surname.
