It’s Family Time~The Joel Sellers Family

Joel Sellers, the 3rd born child of Phillip Sellers, Jr. and his wife Mary E. “Polly” Gulledge was born in June 1832. He had an older sister and brother and a younger sister and brother.

Joel’s father Phillip Sellers, Jr. passed away sometime before 1850 leaving his widow with 5 children to raise.

When the Civil War broke out in January 1861 Joel enlisted into Co "I", 43rd Reg't NC Troops on 25 February 1862.

Private Joel Sellers
Born in Chesterfield District, South Carolina and resided in Anson County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Anson County on February 25, 1862. Present or accounted for until discharged on August 14, 1862, by reason of "an excessive and remarkable congenital malformation of the chest." Later served as Private in 1st Company, 36th Regiment N. C. troops (2nd Regiment N.C. Artillery)

On 23 May 1864, Joel was discharged from the service by orders of  Genl. Whiting. [General William Henry Chase Whiting]

After his service to his country, Joel returned home and married, in 1866, a young lady by the name of Rachel Phillips. There were no known children born to this union.

Then in early January 1912, Joel passed away. For years I had narrowed his death date to a period of time between 5 May 1910 (Census) and 12 July 1912 (Statement of Wife in Pension file). 

The two documents that allowed me to narrow the time frame for Joel’s death are the:
1910 census enumerated 5 May 1910 showing Joel alive and living in Anson County and page 3 of Joel’s Civil war pension file where Rachel stated on 12 July 1912 that she was the widow of Joel Sellers.

• Joel Sellers died between 5 May 1910 (Census) and 12 July 1912 (Statement of Wife in Pension file). 

Then a friend and outstanding Genealogical researcher named Julie H. sent me an obituary for Joel's death. This obituary provided the exact date of Joel's death. Joel Sellers died on 6 January 1912.

Mr. Joel Sellers, a well-known citizen of Gulledge township, died at his home in that township Saturday. [torn] been ill for several [torn] been [torn] some time. Uncle Joel was a [torn] member of the Primitive Baptist Church and he was an honest and [torn] ileless as the days are long. He was a veteran of the war between the states and was a good soldier. His wife survives.

His wife, Rachel Phillips, daughter of Reuben and Hannah Phillips would live another 6 years passing away on 24 January 1918.

Joel Sellers is my 1st Cousin 4 times removed.

This Indenture made this the 21st day of Dec. in the years one thousand eight hundred and eighty one between Hannah Philips, Elizabeth Philips, M. A. Philips, Lively Philips, C. M. Tarlton & wife S. J. Tarlton, Joel Sellers & Rachel Sellers, of the county of Anson and State of North Carolina, of the one part, and W. B. Little of the county of Anson and State of North Carolina of the other part. Witnesseth, That the said parties of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of Eighty dollars, to the said party of the first part in hand paid – the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged  - hath sold and conveyed  and doth hereby sell and convey to the said party of the second part, all that tract or parcel pf land, lying in the County of Anson and State of North Carolina and bounded as follows; to wit: beginning at a stake in the center of the Wadesboro & Camden road and runs N. 87 Wt. 20.75 links to a stake formerly to a stake by a dogwood, thence S. 1 Wt. 11 chains to a stake by a large post oak stump, thence So. 87 Et.12.60 links to the center of the Wadesboro & Camden road, thence with said road to the beginning containing about fifteen acres be the same more or less.To have and to hold the same, with the appurtenances thereunto belonging, to the said party of the second part, and his heirs and assigns forever. And the said  party of the first part, for the consideration aforesaid, doth hereby covenant and agree to warrant and defend the premises aforesaid, to the said party of the second part his heirs,Executors, administrators, and assigns against the claim and entry of all persons whatsoever, and they doth further warrant that they are seized of the premises sin fee simple, and hath forever to make and convey such an estate by this Indenture, and hath  done the same by these presents to the said Wm. Tarlton, Joel Sellers &  wife Rachel Sellers personally appeared before me this day, and acknowledged the due execution of the foregoing deed of conveyance and  the said Sarah J. Tralton and Rachel Sellers, being by me personally examined, separate and apart from their said husbands, touching them voluntary execution of the same doth state that they signed the same freely and voluntarily, without fear or compulsion of their said husbands or any other person and that they do still voluntarily assent thereto. Witness my hand and seal this December 27th, 1881.

Treasure Chest Thursday~Joel Sellers, Civil War Pension File

Joel Sellers was born June 1831, a son of of Phillip Sellers, Jr. and Mary E. “Polly” Gulledge. Joel along with his brother Phillip enlisted in the Civil war on 25 February 1862. While I have no proof, I suspect that Joel was injured while in the military. On  23 May 1864, General William Henry Chase Whiting issued orders discharging Joel from the military for “an excessive and remarkable congenital malformation of the chest." 

Joel returned home and married about 1865, Rachel Phillips, daughter of Reuben J. Phillips and his wife Hannah.  

The last census that I could find Joel and Rachel in was the 1910 Census for Anson County. Joel was 74 and Rachel was age 72. They had been married for 45 years with no children.

No tombstone or death certificate had been found for Joel Sellers. His wife Rachel, did have a death certificate that shows she died as a widow on 24 Jan 1918 in Anson County, North Carolina.

For some years, Joel's death date has been recorded in my database as before 24 Jan 1918. So last week I made a concentrated effort to locate a death date for Joel. While I was unable to locate a precise death date I have narrowed the time line down to between 5 May 1910 and 15 July 1912; a 2 year 2 months time period. 

The two documents that allowed me to narrow the time frame for Joel’s death are the:

• 1910 census enumerated 5 May 1910 showing Joel alive and living in Anson County and
• page 3 of Joel’s Civil war pension file where Rachel stated  on 12 July 1912 that she was the widow of Joel Sellers.

This indenture made and entered into this the 25^th day of November AD 1881, by and between Charles S. Phillips and Miles W. Porter wife Mary Ella Porter, parties of the first part, and (1) Elizabeth Phillips (2) Mary Ann Phillips, (3) Lively Phillips, (4) Rachel Sellers wife of Joel Sellers, 5 Sarah Jane Talton wife of C. M. Talton, parties of the second part. All of the County of Anson and State of North Carolina, Witnesseth: That for and in consideration of the sum of Fifty Dollars to them paid by the parties of the second part the receipt of which is hereby acknowledge, the said parties of the first part have bargained and sold , and by these presents, do bargain, sale, alien, convey and confirm unto the said partied of the second part jointly, their heirs and assigns all the rights, title, claim, and interest which the said parties of the first part has in and to the tract of land hereinafter described, that is to say all the right, title, claim and interact that have in and to said land as heirs at law of Reuben Phillips deceased, and as heirs at law of R. J. Phillips deceased by virtue of a deed of conveyance from Reuben Phillips to R. James Phillips, dated December 1^st., 1855, and registered on the registers Office of Anson County, in Deed Book No. 14, on pages 539 and 540. Said land is situate in the County of Anson, State of North Carolina, on the waters of Jones Creek, and is bounded as follows: beginning at a pine on Joel Gulledges’ corner the first corner of said tract and runs N. 89 W. 12.80 chains to a stake the corner of lot No. 1 then S. 30 W. 10 chains to a stake the Beginning of No. 5 then N. 89 E. 35 chains to a stake 8 red oak pointer, then 1 East 11 chains to the old corner 2 pines and a pact oak pointer, then S,. 89 East 20.20 chains to the old corner 2 pines pointer, the with the Gulledges’ line N. 9 E. 19.50 chains to the Beginning containing Seventy Five acres more or less, these boundaries being copied from the registry of the deed above referred to. To have and to hold to them the said parties of the second part jointly, their heirs and assigns, all the title, right, claim and interest in and to the above described land, with all the privileges and appurtenances thereunto belonging. In testimony whereof the said Charles S. Phillips and Miles W. Lowry, a Justice of the Peace of said county touching the execution of said deed by the other grantors therein names, is adjudged to be in due form and according to law. Joel Sellers is my 1st Cousin 4 time removed. This land deed provided the maiden name of his wife Rachel.
