The Shocking Truth~Sarah, wife of Samuel Deese, Is Not a Daughter of John Hill and Huldah Jackson

 There are 138 Public trees on Ancestry claiming that Samuel Deese married Sarah Hill, born 1811 or 1815 the daughter of John Hill and Huldah Jackson. I believe all those trees are in error. Samuel Deese did marry a young lady by the name of Sarah but her maiden name is unknown. The only source giving “Sarah Hill” as the wife of Samuel Deese is the death certificate of four of their 9 children; three daughters and one son. 

Individual pages of the John Hill Family Bible are contained within his Revolutionary Pension File (W-18014).

The Family Bible:

She supposes her husband kept no date of their Marriage till after the birth of her first Child then a Register was kept of the family in a large Bible belonging to a family & the following is a true statement from the family Register,

John Hill was born February the 4th day 1749, Huldah Jackson now the wife of John Hill was born February the 7th day 1764, Married in the year 1780,

The following is correct from the family Register of the names & births of the Children of John Hill & Huldah Hill his wife,

John Hill the son of John Hill &Huldah Hill was born the 9th day of January 1781,

Sara Hill the Daughter of John Hill & Huldah Hill his wife was born the 23rd day April, 1783

Abraham Hill the son of John Hill & Huldah Hill his wife was born the 22nd day of July 1786,

Isaac Hill the son of John Hill & Huldah Hill his wife was born the ninth day of January 1788,

Jacob Hill the son of John Hill & Huldah Hill his wife was born the 21st day December 1790

Elizabeth Hill the Daughter of John Hill & Huldah Hill his wife was born the 12th day of November 1793

Jonathan J. Hill the son of John Hill & Huldah Hill his wife was born the 9th day of January 1795,

Jonathan Hill the son of John Hill & Huldah Hill his wife was born the 27th of February 1797,

Huldah Hill the Daughter of John Hill & Huldah Hill his wife was born the 6th day of October 1799,

William Hill the son of John Hill & Huldah Hill his wife was born the 7th day of September 1804,

Rebehah Hill the Daughter of John Hill & Huldah Hill his wife was born the 23rd day of April 1809,

That her husband John Hill died the 14th day of August 1817,

Sworn & subscribed before me the day of February 1839.

It’s clear to see that John Hill and Huldah Jackson did indeed have a daughter named Sara Hill; but. she was borne in April 1783 NOT 1811 or 1815 and that she died in October 1789.

Clearly, the Family Bible Extract and copies of the actual pages show that Huldah (Jackson) Hill last borne child, was her daughter, Rebecca, on 23 April 1809.

The following 4 images are from the transcribed Pension Application for John Hill (W-18014) transcribed by Will Graves, 3/15/08, rev'd 12/29/15.

The location of this Family Bible today is unknown.

John Hill died 14 August 1817. His wife, Huldah (Jackson) Hill died 28 August 1840. If her daughter Sarah (Hill) Deese was borne in 1815 she would have been 25 years of age in 1840 when her mother passed away. 

The following pleas and quarters document was executed upon the death of Huldah (Jackson) Hill. Sarah (Hill) Deese did not pass away until 6 Sept 1881.

By Norfleet D. Boggan Clerk of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions for Anson County certify that satisfactory evidence has been exhibited to said court that Huldah Hill widow of John Hill died on the 28th day of August 1840 and left John Hill, Isaac Hill, Jacob Hill, Jonathan J. Hill, Huldah Hill and William Hill who survived her.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my seal of office and subscribed my name is 15th day of July 1845.

If  the said Sarah (Hill?) Deese had been a daughters of Huldah (Jackson) Hill she would have been named in the above sworn statement. 

No daughter of John Hill and Huldah Jackson married Samuel Deese. Samuel married a young lady named Sarah about 1830 in Anson County. Her surname is unknown.

Amanuensis Monday~Deed, Crop Lien between Samuel Dees and Daniel M. Johnson

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is:

Today’s subject is a  Deed between Samuel Dees to Daniel M. Johnson, 1843.¹

Samuel Deese is my 2nd Great Grandfather. His wife was  Sarah “Sallie” Hill, b. about 1815, Anson County, North Carolina. The parents of Sarah “Sallie” Hill is one of my “Brick Walls”. For over 40 years no-one, including myself, has proven the parents of Sarah “Sallie” Hill. Yes, I know there are many online trees that says her parents are Rev. John Hill (1749-1817) and his wife, Huldah Jackson (1764-1840).

The Family Bible of Rev. John Hill is included in his Rev. War Records and yes he had a daughter Sarah that died young plus his will has no mention of a daughter Sarah living after his death in 1817.

I’m a dedicated researcher that has used land deeds to solve many genealogical problems. So, I went looking for Land Deeds executed by Samuel Deese, Sarah Hill or Sarah Deese. I found one and it was no help; but, I will share it here today.

Samuel Dees to Daniel M. Johnson

Anson County} This Indenture is made this the 14^th day of February 1843 between Daniel Johnson on one part and Samuel Dees on the other The following obligation are as follows, viz; I Samuel Dees do give bargain sell and release one brown Mare Mule and the crop that I expect to make this Season for the consideration of forty dollars paid to me Samuel Dees in hand also for the rent of the place on which the said Dees lines, Viz: twenty-five Hundred pounds Cotton in the Seed to be delivered as gathered from the field. The conditions of the above obligation are such as when the said Samuel Dees pays the above-named sum in money to the said Johnson together with the rent they are null and void but in otherwise to remain in full force and affect.             Daniel M. Who are the Parents of Sarah Hill, b. abt 1811 and d. 6 Sept 1881

Sarah Hill, age 15-19, married  Samuel Deese, born 1805 in/or about 1830 in Anson County, North Carolina. Samuel was a son of Stephen Deese and his wife, whom many say is, Sarah Alice Honeycutt.

The parents of Sarah ‘Sallie’ Hill are UNKNOWN. Sarah, the wife of Samuel, can be found in the 1850, 1870 and 1880 Census. Her age in these censuses in order is age 35, age 55, age 60. The 1850/1870 Census suggests she was born in the year 1815. Her death notice in 1881 says she is 70 years of age suggesting she was born in the year 1811.

Ancestry Thrulines shows Sarah Hill as a daughter of John Hill and Huldah Jackson.

But, there is not a paper trail to substantiate this and I DO NOT believe that John Hill and Huldah Jackson are her parents.

John and Huldah did have a daughter named Sarah, b.  April 23rd, 1783; died. Oct 1789.

John Hill served in the Revolutionary War. The Family Bible is included in John Hill Rev. War File W-18014

In 1838/1839 Huldah Jackson Hill, widow of John Hill deceased, submitted an application for a pension related to the Revolutionary War service of her husband John Hill. Included within this application (W-18014) was a copy of pertinent pages from the Hill Family Bible. The last child documented as born to this family was/is Rebecca Jackson Hill, born  23 April 1809; d. Oct. 1811.

    

Since there is absolutely no proof establishing Sarah Hill, b. 1811; d. 6 September 1881 is a daughter of John and Huldah Jackson Hill I would offer the following reasons why it's impractical.

First, The Birth, death, and marriage of the John Hill Family are meticulously documented in the Family Bible and there is no indication in the Family Bible that a second daughter was given the name of the first deceased Sarah Hill.

•  Surely, Huldah Jackson Hill wouldn’t omit the birth of the last child from the Family Bible if this was indeed her child.
• Also if this is her child why would she omit her from the pension application. 

John Hill died, according to the Family Bible, on 14 August 1817. The 1820 Anson County, NC Census for this family substantiates that John was no longer in the Household. It also substantiates that there was not a Female daughter in the Household under the age of 10.  To be precise there were 2 females in the household, 1 age 16-25 and 1 over 45+ [Huldy], head of Household.  

Finally, Huldah was age 47 and John was age 62 when the 2nd Sarah was born in 1811. 

A review of the 1820 Census shows 3 Hill families in the County (Anson). In addition to Huldy Hill, there is a listing for two of her sons, Jonathan J. Hill and John Hill. Both Jonathan and John had females in their home under 10 years of age. John Hill, Sr and Huldah Jackson had seven sons but none of these eight men left Wills or Probate records in Anson County. Jacob Hill did leave a Will in Catawba County, NC. Huldah Jackson Hill is named in the Will of her Father John Jackson.  

Sometime prior to 1844, several of the Hill children moved their families to Dickson County, Tennessee. 

The parents of Sarah 'Sallie" Hill, b. abt 1811, d. 6 Sept. 1881 is still a mystery. If you have any clues to the names of her parents I would love to hear from you.  

Its Family Time~ William Bogan Deese

William Bogan Deese was born about 1837 a son of  Samuel Deese and Sarah ‘Sallie’ Hill of Anson County, North Carolina. He was a farmer.

On 3 October 1861, at age 24, William Bogan Deese enlisted with Company B, North Carolina 31st Infantry Regiment.

DEESE, WILLIAM B., Private
Resided in Anson County where he enlisted at age 24, October 3, 1861. Died in hospital at Wilmington on or about September 3, 1863, of “pneumonia.”[North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865: A Roster, Volume 8, page 440]

He died in July 1863, at the age of 26, in Wilmington, North Carolina. He was enlisted by E. R. Liles for the duration of the War. It is not known where William Bogan Deese was buried.

It’s Family Time~Frank and Sarah E. Deese Melton

The tombstone for Sarah E. (Deese) Melton at Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery in Lilesville, North Carolina shows that Sarah was born on 15 February 1829.

Sarah E. Deese is the daughter of  Samuel Dese and Sarah Hill. The family is enumerated in the Sandy Point District of Anson County in 1850. At the time of this enumeration, Sarah was age 9 and Samuel and Sarah Hill had been married for almost 20 years.

Sarah E. Deese and Frank Melton were married in 1873 per their response to years married on the 1900 Census which was reported as 27 years with 6 children with 5 living.
Prior to her marriage to Frank Melton, Sarah had a son,  Robert Ofnile Aycock. His death certificate shows his parents to be Robert Aycock and Sarah Deese. 

Frank F. Melton and Sarah E. Deese had 6 children of which 5 were living in 1900. Sarah’s son Robert is included in this count. 

Frank F. Melton and Sarah E. Deese had the following children:
i. Sarah Melton, born 22 Mar 1874, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married William Samuel Luther; died 17 Jul 1958, Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina.
ii. W. Hampton Melton was born on 10 Sep 1877 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 19 Feb 1919 at the age of 41 in Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina.
iii. James Marshall Melton, born Dec 1879, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Ella Francis Luther; died 15 May 1952, Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina.
iv. George Bunyon Melton, born Jun 1884, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Ollie Teal; died 6 May 1979, Montgomery County, North Carolina.

It’s Family Time~Nancy Deese Short

Nancy Deese was born about 1843, a daughter of Samuel Deese and Sarah ‘Sallie’ Hill. Nancy, age 7, is listed along with 5 other sibling in the household of her Grandmother in 1850 Anson County. 

In 1870, Nancy Deese is newly married to Sam Short, no children, enumerated in the Gulledge township of Anson County, North Carolina.




In the 1900 Census for Anson County, Nancy says she is a widow and that she is the Mother of 10 Children with 1 Living. I know this is wrong because in 1910 she has her daughter Dora Ann and Son-in-law Solomon R. Williams in her household.  Also in the 1910 Census she reports that she is the Mother of 6 children with 1 child still living.

Between the 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920 census I have identified 4 children of Samuel and Nancy Deese Short

• Eller Short, b. 1870
• Dora Ann Short, b. 1876
• Willie Short, b. Dec 1879
• Annie D. Short, b. Jun 1883

Nancy reported that she was a widow in the 1900 census but I have found no record of her husband’s death. Her brother, John Calvin Deese (My Great Grandfather) was the informant on Nancy's death certificate. No date of burial or place of burial were reported. I have not located a tombstone for Nancy Deese Short. Her burial site is unknown and we know from her death certificate that she died on 16 May 1921 in Morven, Anson County, North Carolina.

It’s Family Time~William Bogan Deese

William Bogan Deese, son of Samuel Deese and Sarah ‘Sallie’ Hill was born about 1837 in Anson County, North Carolina. He was the second born of 9 children and his oldest sibling was a sister. He had 4 brothers and 4 sisters.

Samuel, his wife Sarah and their children can be found in the 1850 census for Anson County in the household of Samuel's sister Mary Deas.

William Bogan was the only son old enough to serve in the Civil War. He enlisted on 3 October 1861 into Company ‘B’, North Carolina 31st Infantry Regiment. 

William Bogan Deese was a single man when he left home to serve during the Civil War. No record of a marriage has been found for William; however, many researchers has combined his record with that of a married Bogan Deese from Stanly County, NC.  

William Bogan Deese died of pneumonia, September 3, 1863, General Hospital No. 4, Wilmington, North Carolina.

William Bogan Deese is my Great Grand Uncle.

It’s Family Time~Stephen Deese

Never have I found so little information as I have on my 3rd Great Grandparents; the parents of  Samuel Deese born about 1805. The consensus of most researchers is that Stephen Deese is the father of Samuel Deese and that Stephen's wife is unknown. 

But to tell you the truth from my point of view there seems to be a lot of speculation. I have found Stephen Deese in two census; the 1830 Robeson County, NC Census and the 1840 Anson County census.^{1 2}

Thanks to my friend and fellow researcher Julie Hampton we do have a date of Death for Stephen Deese even though almost every tree on Ancestry is WRONG and shows that he died in 1845. 

Stephen Deese actual date of death is  24 July 1847. ³

Stephen Deese and his wife had the following children:
 
i. James Deese was born about 1795 in Anson County, North Carolina
ii. Samuel Deese, born abt 1805,  Anson County, North Carolina; married Sarah Hill, 1830, Anson County, North Carolina; died abt 4 Jun 1888.
iii. Mary Deese was born about 1810 in Anson County, North Carolina
iv. William Deese was born about 1815 in Anson County, North Carolina.
v. Thomas Deese was born about 1815 in Anson County, North Carolina.

52 Ancestors: #47, Samuel Deese

It could be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem — anything that focuses on one ancestor. Not only should this get me blogging more, but also to take a deeper look at some of the people in my family tree.”

The focus of my blog post today is Samuel Deese. 

Samuel Deese was born about 1805 in Anson County, North Carolina.¹ He and his family were found in the 1830-1880 Censuses for Anson County, North Carolina. ^{2 3 4 5} While it has not been confirmed he is thought to be the son of Stephen Deese and his wife Sarah (LNU).

Samuel Deese married and Sarah "Sallie" Hill about 1830 in Anson County, North Carolina. This date is based on the birth of their first child, Martha in 1831.

Sarah "Sallie" Hill was born about 1811 in Stanly County, North Carolina.^{6 7 8} Her parents are unknown, Sallie (Hill) Deese died on 6 Sep 1881 at the age of 70 in Anson County, North Carolina.

Samuel Deese and Sarah Hill had the following children:

i. Martha Deese, born abt 1831, Anson County, North Carolina; married Alex Melton; died 9 Apr 1915, Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina.
ii. William Bogan Deese was born about 1837 in Anson County, North Carolina.⁹ He served in the military Company B, North Carolina 31st Infantry Regiment in 1861–1865. He died on 3 Sep 1863 at the age of 26 in Wilmington, North Carolina.
iii. Sarah A. Deese, born abt 1841, Stanly County, North Carolina; married Frank F. Melton, 1873; died 18 Nov 1916, Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina.
iv. Nancy Deese, born abt 1843,  Anson County, North Carolina; married Sam Short; died 16 May 1921, Morven, Anson, North Carolina.
v. James Hamilton Deese was born about 1845 in Anson County, North Carolina.¹⁰
vi. Henry Harrison Deese Sr., born 4 Aug 1845, Anson County, North Carolina; married Nellie Isabella Huneycutt, 1 Feb 1875, Morven, Anson, North Carolina; died 21 Jun 1913, Morven, Anson, North Carolina.
vii. John Calvin Deese, born 10 Nov 1852, Anson County, North Carolina; married Louvena Huneycutt, 9 Apr 1884, Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina; Louvena died from complication at childbirth on 16 October 1889. John Calvin then married Sarah Frances Gathings, 4 Feb 1892, Morven, Anson, North Carolina; died 1 Apr 1930, Morven, Anson, North Carolina.
viii. Zachariah T. Deese, born Oct 1854, Anson County, North Carolina; married Clara W. Gathings, 22 Dec 1890, Morven, Anson, North Carolina; died 22 Jun 1923, Lilesville, Anson, North Carolina.
ix. Elizabeth Deese was born about 1861 in Anson County, North Carolina.¹¹

No tombstone has been found for Samuel and Sallie and their death occurred many years before death certificates were mandatory in North Caroline. There was a death notice posted for Sallie in the local newspaper.

No death notice or obituary had been found for Samuel Deese but we know he died about 4 June 1888 at the age of 88 because of this clipping.
Found in Anson County Commissioner Proceedings Volume A, page 338 - June 4, 1888 - Ordered by the Board of Commissioners that the treasurer pay William McGregor two dollars 25 cents for coffin for Sam Dees. Facebook posting by Steve Bailey.
