Nancy Deese was born about 1843, a daughter of Samuel Deese and Sarah ‘Sallie’ Hill. Nancy, age 7, is listed along with 5 other sibling in the household of her Grandmother in 1850 Anson County.
In 1870, Nancy Deese is newly married to Sam Short, no children, enumerated in the Gulledge township of Anson County, North Carolina.
In the 1900 Census for Anson County, Nancy says she is a widow and that she is the Mother of 10 Children with 1 Living. I know this is wrong because in 1910 she has her daughter Dora Ann and Son-in-law Solomon R. Williams in her household. Also in the 1910 Census she reports that she is the Mother of 6 children with 1 child still living.

Charlie, it sounds like the census records were inaccurate for Nancy. I wonder if she gave them wrong information or if they wrote down the wrong thing. Was John Calvin a half brother? I notice the different surnames, Deese & Calvin.
ReplyDeleteColleen, I agree, the census records are wrong. John Calvin was her brother. I went back and added the Surname Deese after his name. I need to start ensuring I do this because everyone reading the blog are not familiar with the individuals named. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI think this was an interesting post. We also have ancestors from Anson County, North Carolina.
ReplyDeleteI am a little confused about something. Where you said, "In 1870, Nancy Deese is newly married to Sam Deese, no children...", did you mean Sam Short? The first paragraph says that Samuel Deese is her father, that is why I am confused.
Have a blessed day. :)
Suzanne, thank you very much for pointing out my mistake. Yes, it should have said Sam Short. I fixed it. Thanks again.
