Hardy J. Sellers, Soldier, Father and Esteemed Citizen Passes Away

Hardy J. Sellers was born 17 September 1831, a son of Elijah Sellers and Sarah Purvis. He was their first born son and the 2nd oldest of five siblings; 2 sisters and 3 brothers.

Hardy J. served in the 4th SC Cavalry, Confederate States Army, during the War Between the States. He enlisted April 22, 1862, was wounded at the Battle of Cold Harbor and sent to the hospital in Raleigh, NC 30 May 1864, then on  2 June 1864 he was sent to another hospital in Virginia.

After returning home from the War, Hardy married Elizabeth Smith on 16 March 1871.

Hardy J. Sellers and Elizabeth Smith had two children:

1. Maggie May Sellers, b. 23 May 1880; d. 27 May 1885.
2. William Arthur ‘Bud’ Sellers, b. 10 March 1882, d. 1 July 1959; married Letty Alliene Merriman about 1909.

Hardy J. died on 19 September 1910. Elizabeth lived another 11 1/2 years passing away on 12 February 1922. Both are buried at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Chesterfield. Sept. 20 – Hardy J. Sellers died at his home near here yesterday. He was a good soldier in the Confederate army in Company A, Fourth regiment. Mr. Sellers was 79 years old. In the death of Mr. Sellers Chesterfield county has lost one of her best citizens.

Its Family Time~Hardy J. Sellers

Hardy J. Sellers, son of Elijah Sellers and Sarah Purvis, was born on  17 September 1831.

Hardy along with his brothers, John E., Elijah and Phillip Albert all served in the War between the States.  Two of the brothers John E and Elijah gave their lives on the same day at Hawes Shop, Virginia in service to their country.

After the war, Hardy J. came home twice wounded and married Elizabeth Smith on 16 March 1871. 


Hardy J. Sellers and Elizabeth Smith had the following children:

i. Maggie May Sellers was born on 23 May 1880 in Marlboro County, South Carolina. She died on 27 May 1885 at the age of 5 and is buried at Bethel Methodist Church, Marlboro Co., SC.

ii. William Arthur "Bub" Sellers, born 10 Mar 1882, Marlboro County, South Carolina; married Letty Alliene Merriman; died 1 Jul 1959, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Phillip Albert Sellers, son of Elijah Sellers and Sarah Purvis died on 6 April 1896 leaving surviving him, his wife Anna Jane Douglass Sellers and 7 children; 4 sons and 3 daughters. 

Court Petition:

On 14 April 1896, Anna J. Sellers petitioned the courts for Letters of Administrations on the estate of her husband, Philip Sellers. Letters were granted to her to administered the estate.

The petition of your petitioner shows to this Court that Philip Sellers late of the state and county aforesaid died intestate on the 6^th day of April 1896 leaving your petitioner as his widow and leaving a personal estate amounting to about two hundred dollars, and your petitioner desires that Letters of Administration be granted to her.
Wherefore she prays that you will grant to her Letters of Administration on said Estate and she will ever pray &c.                                                   April 14^th 1896                                                                   A. J. Sellers

Three appraisers were appointed by the Courts on 16 May 1896 to appraise the personal estate of Philip Sellers. (Image 1607) Appointed were:

• A. D. Smith
• Ervin Oliver
• D. N. Douglass

The men proceeded to appraise the estate and presented their two page finding to the Courts. (images  1605-1606).

Distributions: 

The administratrix, Anna J. Sellers, made distribution on the estate in October 1906.

Seven of 8 children received distributive shares in the estate. One son, William had previously died in 1878. 
 
Anna Jane Douglass Sellers died on 7 February 1914 in Elba, Coffee County, Alabama. She went there to live with her son, James Douglas and his wife, after the death of her husband. She is buried locally in the Evergreen Cemetery. Her husband, Philip Albert Sellers, was buried in the Douglass Cemetery, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Elijah Sellers, son of Elijah Sellers and Sarah Purvis, married Harriett E. McNair sometime before June 1860. Harriett was the daughter of Neil McNair and Mary A. Crawford.

Elijah enlisted on 26 December 1861 to serve in the Civil War with Company A, 4th SC Calvary. He was killed in action (KIA) on 28 May 1864 at the Battle of Haw's Shop, Virginia.^{1 2 3}
Elijah left behind his wife, Harriett and a daughter Sarah E. Sellers, b. 24 February 1861. This was their only child. She died 8 October 1862. Harriett, never remarried and died at age 89 on 6 January 1823.^{4 5}

They both are buried in the McNair Family Cemetery, Ruby, Chesterfield County, South Carolina.^{6 7}

John E. Sellers was born about 1833 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, a son of Elijah Sellers and Sarah Purvis. He was the fourth born of seven children with 2 sisters and 4 brothers. Both he and his younger brother, Elijah Sellers were Killed in Action (KIA) on 28 May 1864 at the Battles of Haw’s Shop also known as the Battle of Enon Church.^{1 2}

John E. Sellers enlisted on 26 December 1861 at Cheraw, South Carolina as a 3rd Sgt. into Company “A”, Rutledge’s Regiment Cavalry, also known as 4th cavalry. He was Promoted to 2nd Sgt on 1 December 1862 and to 1st Sgt prior to May-June 1863.  

Both John E. and Elijah Sellers are shown as buried in the McNair Family Cemetery. Elijah was married to Harriett E. daughter of Neil McNair and Mary Crawford. John E. Sellers was never married.

Lavicy Sellers was born 14 February 1828, the fist born child of Elijah Sellers and Sarah Purvis. She had five siblings, one sister and four brothers.

Shortly after May 1860, Lavicy married William “Billy” Hurst. Their first born, a son William B. “Willie” Hurst was born on 30 October 1861. They would raise a family of eight children.

Surname Saturday~Hurst-Rivers-Sellers-Purvis

William “Billy” Hurst was born on 8 Aug 1813, a son Phillip Hurst and his wife Elizabeth [LNU] ¹of Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

About 1830, when Billy was seventeen years of age he married Nancy Rivers, a daughter of Isaac Rivers and Nancy Parker. Billy and Nancy had two children:

• Phillip Hurst, b. 8 August 1830
• Isaac F. Hurst, b. 1833

The1850 census shows the family listed in household # 1155 and doing very well compared to other small  farmers in the county.

Then in May 1860, tragedy strikes the family and Nancy dies from an attack of FLUX.^2 3

Nancy Rivers Hurst was buried in the Hurst cemetery. No tombstone marks her grave.
On December 20, 1860, South Carolina succeed from the Union.

The Confederate States of America is formed in February 1861 with Jeff Davis as it’s President.

On April 12, 1861, a contingent of  Confederates fired upon Fort Sumter initiating the start of the Civil War. 

On 26 December 1861, age age 27, Isaac F. Rivers enlisted into Capt. James C. Craig’s Company, South Carolina Volunteers. (4th SCVI) ⁴  Nine months and 8 days later Isaac F. Hurst would die of disease in Georgetown, South Carolina.

Sometime between May 1860, when Billy’s wife Nancy Rivers died and February 1861, Billy married Lavinia ”Lavicy”, “Vicy” Sellers, daughter of Elijah Sellers and Sarah Purvis. 

Lavinia was born on 14 February 1828 and most likely named after her grandmother Vicey Purvis.

Billy’s and Lavicy’s first child, a son, William B.  “Willie” Hurst was born on 30 October 1861.  

Billy and Lavicy Sellers Hurst had the following children:

2. Lucy Hurst also passed away before her Father; yet, no record of her death has been found. 

On 4 March 1884 William “Billy” Hurst passed away and was buried in the Hurst cemetery. His wife, Lavicy Sellers Hurst lived another 14 years passing away on 28 October 1898. She was laid to rest beside her husband. ^{7 8 9 10}

Lavicy Sellers Hurst is my 1st cousin 4 times removed.
