Thompson Powell, Early Chesterfield, SC Settler

Thompson B. Powell was born about 1802 in SC. He appeared in the 1850 & 1860 Census in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, United States.[1][2]

Thompson died about 1866 at the age of 64 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, United States.

His estate[3] was probated with Letters of Administration issued to R. T. Powell on 11 June 1866.

His estate was appraised and all items were sold at auction on 25 June 1866. 

Legal heirs to the estate were: 

Mary [Boatwright] Powell, [his wife]
William M. Hurst and Wife Mary E., [Powell]
Richard T. Powell, [Son]
Ann R[ebecca] Powell, [Daughter]
Ellen Powell [Daughter]

Thompson B. Powell and Mary Boatwright were married about 1834 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, United States. Mary Boatwright, daughter of Lewis Boatwright and Sarah Lundy, was born about 1810 in SC. [4][5] It is not known when she passed away but is believed to happen prior to 1870. The 1870 Census has Richard and Ellen living in a household and the other children are married and living with their families. 

Thompson B. Powell and Mary Boatwright had the following children:

                i.              Mary E. Powell, born 3 Dec 1835, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, United States; married William Monroe Hurst; died 9 May 1917, McFarlan, Anson County, North Carolina.
                ii.             Richard Thompson Powell, born abt 1841, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, United States; married M. W. T. [LNU, last name unknown] , abt 1875.
                iii.            Ann Rebecca Powell, born 9 Jan 1847, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, United States; married Ferguson Hale Smith, abt 1871; died 24 Feb 1902, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, United States.
                iv.           Ellen E. Powell was born on 11 Oct 1851 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, United States. [6][7][8] She died on 9 Dec 1940 at the age of 89 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina, United States. A Memorial has been created for her at www.findagrave.com.

Her obituary was published in local newspaper and a copy was found in the Scrapbook of Ella Jane White, daughter of Henry Wiley White and Emma Hudson Eddins White.

Miss Ellen Powell, 92, died at the home of her great-nephew, Lee Jenkins, just west of Chesterfield, early Monday morning and was buried at Pine Grove cemetery Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. Miss Powell was the youngest child of the late Thompson and Polly Powell, who were among the earliest settlers of this county. She had one brother, Richard Powell who was a captain in the Confederate Army and for years engaged in business in Cheraw. She was distantly related to Drewery Boatwright whose monument in the Boatwright cemetery bears the date 1812. She was the aunt of Miss Artie Hurst, Mrs. Jesse Jenkins, Miss Garphilia Smith and Miss Nettie Smith. She was distantly related also to the Powells of Columbia , Bennettsville and Cheraw, and to the Rivers family of Chesterfield.

She never married and was a lifelong resident of Chesterfield County.

She is buried in the Pine Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

  1. Richard T. Powell's CSA marker is in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. It along with Brury Boatwright was moved from S.C. Highway 9 in 1974. There are no dates on his stone.
