Isaac F.
Hurst was born in 1833 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina,. He was a son
of William “Billy” Hurst and Nancy Rivers. He had an older brother Phillip born
about 1830 in Chesterfield. His Mother, Nancy died in May 1860 from Flux. [1] [2]
Isaac
F. Hurst was recruited by Capt. James C. Craig for service in the Civil War. On
December 26, 1861, at Cheraw, SC, Isaac F. Hurst enlisted into Company “A”, 12th
Battalion SC Cavalry for 12 months.
He
was shown as present on Company Muster Rolls for Jan. 25, 1862 and in July-August
1862.
His
horse was valued at $150.00 and his equipment was valued at $25.00. Also in the
same unit was Phillip Hurst, age 20. At first I thought this was his brother Phillip;
but, it’s not, this is Phillip J. Hurst, son of Isaac Hurst and Henrietta
Rivers. Isaac F. and Phillip J. Hurst are first Cousins.
The
September-October 1862 Company Muster Rolls reported that Isaac F. Hurst died on 4 Oct 1862 at the age of 29. No reason
was given for his death.[3]
An
excellent book on the death of South Carolina Civil War personnel is Randolph W.
Kirkland; Jr. book entitled “Broken
Fortunes”.[4] A review of Broken Fortune shows Isaac F. Hurst name recorded on page 173. It further shows that Isaac F. Hurst died 10/04/1862
at Georgetown, South Carolina. Cause of death as DOD (died of disease). His sources
for this information were ROH, PP.[5]
The
following letter was also contained within the military files for Phillip Hurst.
After the War, Phillip married and
moved to Collin County, Texas.
