Sarah Ellen White was born 16 July 1867, a daughter of Richmond White and his wife Ann Parsons. Ann was the sister of my 2nd Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Parsons Sellers.
She married 1st, W. H. White and had one son, Thomas Anson White born 17 Oct 1882. She then married Samuel William Lee about 1888. They had two children; one son and one daughter. Shortly after their marriage, Samuel and Sarah Ellen moved to Alabama.
The pension file provided a lot of information on this couple but there was no marriage date for Ellen and Samuel that I could find. The file did indicate that they married in SC and migrated to Alabama in 1888. They own their house and a 35 acre farm. The entire file can be accessed here if you are a member of Ancestry.com - http://goo.gl/UBaa1z
Sarah Ellen White Lee is my 1st cousin 3 times removed.

Amy Johnson Crow of No Story To Small has started a challenge of 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks.
From her blog “The challenge: have one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor. Honor Roll Addendum
While doing the “Honor Roll” posting for yesterday’s blog post I compared the names on the Chesterfield War Memorial with those listed on National Archive and records Administration (NARA).
The following personnel are listed on NARA’s “World War II Honor List of Dead and Missing Army and Army Air Forces Personnel” from Chesterfield County, South Carolina; but are missing from the memorial.
Since the "Honor Roll" is in remembrance of those who gave their lives for our freedom, I have revised to listing.

Sunday’s Obituary~J. R. New
James Robert New
b. 10 Dec 1875
d. 20 May 1933
J. R. New, age 57 years, died at his home here Saturday night at 9 o'clock following an illness of several weeks. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock in the Pageland Presbyterian Church, his pastor, the Rev. I. N. Clegg, officiating, assisted by a former pastor, the Rev. J. A. McIntyre of Chesterfield. Interment was in the Pageland Baptist Church cemetery. Mr. New was born in Meridian, Mississippi, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. C. New, who later moved to Jackson Springs, North Carolina. Mr. New came to this county in 1908, when Pageland was just beginning as a town. For a number of years he was connected with the lumber business in this and other sections of the county and state, and served during part of the 1932 Pageland Police Force, being given a leave of absence in November because of poor health. He was well known and liked all over the county and was a man of straightforward and honest character. Mr. New is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. J. W. McLaughlin of Jefferson, and Miss Atley New of Atlanta, Georgia; four sisters, Mrs. M.H. Dawkins, Darlington; Mrs. Edd McDonald, Kannapolis, North Carolina; Mrs. R.L. Hinson, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Mrs. Ben Gathings of Morven, North Carolina. The floral tributes were many and beautiful and a large crowd of friends gathered to pay their last tribute to the deceased. 1
James Robert New was the son of Rev. James Columbus New and Francis Jane “Fannie” Yates. His Father, Rev. James Columbus was a Methodist Minister.
James Robert New is my wife’s Great Grand Uncle.

Surname Saturday~Toler
I challenge you, my readers, to grab a cup of coffee or a glass of something cold, sit down at the computer and take on this challenge – Find Joel S. Toler and his new bride Catherine in the 1870’s census.
Joel S. Toler is the most mysterious individual that I have in my database. He married my Great Grand Aunt, Alice Catherine “Katie” Johns on 30 September 1869 in Bullock County, Alabama. 1
I think that Joel severed in the Civil War. I have so little information that I cannot tell if this is the Joel S. Toler or someone else. Regardless, his entire record on Fold3 consists of two pages, an Index page and this page.2
This document indicates that the above J. S. Toler served as a Private in Company A of the 29th Regiment, Alabama. 3
The document also indicates that J. S. Toler name appeared on a “ROLL OF PRISONERS OF WAR” of men employed in the Commissary Dept., meridian, Miss., Confederate States Army, commanded by Maj. A. E. Love, C. S., surrender at Citronelle, Ala., by Lieut. Gen. R. Taylor, C. S. A., to Maj. Gen. E. R. Canby, U. S. A., May 4, 1865, and paroled at Meridian, Miss., May 12, 1865.
Roll dated Meridian, Miss., May 12, 1865
Joel wife Catherine was named within a Chesterfield County, SC Land Deed on 3 December 1866 (Deed Book 6, page 177 and Deed Book 5, page 598). Ironically, Alice Catherine in December 1866 signed these deeds as A. C. Toler.
There are some TOLERS in Randolph County, Alabama; it’s a few miles north of Russell and Bullock County where Joel and Catherine and her parents were known to be. All three counties are in eastern Alabama or on the border with Georgia.
Joel and Alice Catherine Johns Toler had two Children:
- Mary Toler, b. 2 June 1871; d. 12 May 1955, Marlboro County, SC.
- William Shadrac Toler, b. 5 Apr 1974; d. 19 June 1955, Chesterfield Co., SC
Joel and Alice have not been found in any census. I have no birth date for Joel. There is an Alabama death date for a J. S. Toler of 29 January 1916 in Covington. I’m trying to obtain a copy of this death certificate.

Rolin R. Sellers was born about 1825 to Roland Sellers and Margaret Eddins.
About 1848, Rolin married Sarah Pratt daughter of Samuel Pratt and Corinda Teal. His first born a son they called William was born about 1849; daughter Sarah was born in 1851. On 6 October 1854, at the age of 29, he was appointed Postmaster for the town of Morven, Anson County, North Carolina. 2 3
The family is enumerated in the 1860 census for Morven, Anson County, NC. Their son, William is missing which may be an indication that he has passed away. However, a new daughter, Sarah has been added to the family. 4
With the advent of the Civil War in January 1861, Rolin R. Sellers like many young men his age eagerly joined up for the cause. Rolin enlisted at Wadesboro, NC on July 1st, 1861 for one (1) year. At the end of that year, Rolin accepted his discharge at Trollinger;’s Station, NC (near Burlington, NC) and vanished. 5 6
Reports back home in Chesterfield was that Rolin R. Sellers enlisted into the war but never came home.
The 1870 listing of Sarah and her daughter Elizabeth is another indication that the man of the house is missing. 7
My long-time friend and fellow researcher Marie Wiggins, who passed away in 2001, had this to say about Rolin R. Sellers.
‘Rollen R. Sellers and wife, Sarah, lived in the Morven Township of Anson County, NC, and were listed in the 1850 and 1860 census. In 1850 they were listed with one child. Rollen enlisted in one of Anson County Regiments during the War Between the States. He was discharged from this unit after being wounded and later walked to Brunswick County, NC and enlisted with another group of Ansonians called 'The Okay Boys.' He did not return from the war, and we can only assume he was killed in the Battle of Fort Johnson or died in a prison.' Marie Wiggins.
Another trip to Fold3 website resulted no evidence if Rolin’s presence in the 31st Regt. N.C. Troops (the "O.K. Boys"). However, I did find him in the 3rd Artillery (40th State Troops). He enlisted into this outfit on 14 Aug 1863 at Fort Branch by Capt. Holland for the duration of the War. 8
Neither record, the 26th or the 3rd shows him suffering wounds in any way during the war nor is there any indication that he was captured and made a prisoner of war.
A search of his Civil war record on Fold3 and an exhaustive search of available resources on–line has revealed no additional evidence on the disappearance of Rolin R. Sellers. Did he accept the $38.83 at the time of his discharge, decide to abandon his family – Wife and daughter – back in Chesterfield, South Carolina and leave for parts unknown?
I have not been able to find any of the 4 individual in this family past 1870 Census. There is unsourced information on-line that Sarah Pratt died 1871 and 1882 and that Rolin R. Sellers died 11 August 1914. None of these dates are sourced and none of them can be confirmed.
If you have any information on Rolin R. Sellers I would like to hear from you.

52 Ancestors: #21, Thomas Davis
Amy Johnson Crow of No Story To Small has started a challenge of 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks.
From her blog “The challenge: have one blog post each week devoted to a specific ancestor. It could be a story, a biography, a photograph, an outline of a research problem — anything that focuses on one ancestor. Not only should this get me blogging more, but also to take a deeper look at some of the people in my family tree.”
The focus of my blog posting today is my 4th Great Grandfather Thomas Davis.
Thomas Davis was born 22 March 1760 to Davis Davis and Jane Miles. He was the youngest of seven (7) known children. His parents migrated from Pencader Hundred, New Castle Delaware to the Welsh Neck area of Chesterfield County South Carolina.1
Thomas married Nancy Rivers in 1787or 1788. Over the next 24 years they would have eleven children; six sons and five (5) daughters. Their first born a son, Samuel was born on 13 August 1790 and their last born also a son, John Calvin was born on 14 December 1812. 2
Thomas served as a patriot in the Revolutionary War. He was a private in 5th Company, Capt. Thomas Hall, Marion's Regt. 1779, The following account of his service is in his own words from his Revolutionary Pension application. 3
“That he entered the Service of the United States under the officers named & served as stated in the following account that he was drafted a short time before Christmas in the year [blank space] and serves as a Private under Capt. Morris Murphy & Maj. Robert Lloyd, that he does not recollect the regiment to which he belonged; that he was marched to a place called the "Long Bluff" on Pee Dee River in the State aforesaid, from there to Sea Wee Bay from there to Haddrells Point - and from there to James island near Charleston from which place he returned home having served in this tour nine weeks. That he was again drafted and marched as a Private under Capt. John Dewitt and Col. George Hicks to Cheraw in the District and State aforesaid where he remained one month & returned home. That he was again drafted as a Private & that on the 8th day of Feb'y (year not recollected) he marched under Capt. Ellerbe & Col. George Hicks cross Black River at Benbow & crossed Santee at Lenud’s Ferry & proceeded to Charleston - That he was in Charleston at the time it was taken by the British under Chiston where he was taken prisoner on the 11th day of May after his march & was discharged and paid on the 19 of same month having served this tour up to the time he was taken prisoner three months & four days.
That he served two tours, of two weeks each, as one of a scouting party. That he was again drafted and marched as a Private under Captain William Presswood to McCord's Ferry on the Congaree River in the State aforesaid, when Col. Washington took Command - that he returned home from McCord's Ferry having served this tour one month and remained at home two months.
That he was drafted again and served as a Private under Capt' Benton & Maj. Tristam Thomas for one month. That he never received a discharge. He hereby relinquishes any claim to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any other State.

After the war, Thomas returned to life as a farmer, caring for and raising his growing family. Starting in 1809, the children are reaching the age of majority, finding mates, moving out and raising their own family. The youngest, John Calvin married Charlotte Hurst on 31 January 1836 making the home an “empty nest.” Thomas is 76 years of age and Nancy is 69 years old.
Thomas died on 20 March 1845 leaving his widow and 9 children surviving his passing. His son Jonathan Daniel had passed away sometime in 1839-1840 and daughter Hulda was last found in the 1830 census. Nancy Rivers Davis died 15 December 1853.
Thomas and Nancy are buried in the Davis Family Cemetery, Chesterfield, South Carolina. 4
