Honoring the Bravery of John Allen Crayton, Sr.

John Allen Crayton, Sr. was born 2 May 1833, a son of Isaac W. Crayton and Nancy S. Page.
He was a farmer, like his father and most other men of that time. About 1853, John Allen married Nancy Jane Starnes, daughter of Nathan T. Starnes and Margaret F. Myers.

In 1860, the family can be found in Stanly County with two children in the household.

His military war record on Fold3.com documents his death and shows that he died with honor. He was so admired that  "a medal was presented to his friends for his bravery." 1

I'm looking for information about this medal and the story behind the medal. If anyone has any information about this medal; is it still in the family; is it on display somewhere in Stanly County or North Carolina.
