In the 1850’s sometime after the Census was taken Luke Rivers and his wife Mary Selina Johns moved their family from Chesterfield County, South Carolina to Jones County Mississippi joining his brother Mark and sister Emelia ‘Milly’ Rivers Holifield.
Luke, Mark, and Amelia were sons and daughter of Mark Rivers and Annie Parker of Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
Luke Rivers and his family can be found in the 1860 Census for Jones County, Mississippi.
In the Census above, two of Luke’s children, the two oldest daughters, have married and moved from within the household of their father. The two youngest children are still at home but Sarah Catherine will not be there very long.
In 1862, Sarah Catherine marries James M. Holifield, son of John C. “Cow John” Holifield and his wife Mary A. Brown. James M. Holifield and Sarah Catherine Rivers were both 18 years of age.
James M. Holifield and Sarah Catharine Rivers had the following children:
i. Almeda M. Holifield was born about 1866 in Jones County, Mississippi. She died before Apr 1888.
ii. Ira M. Holifield was born about 1872 in Jones County, Mississippi. She appeared in the census in 1920 as an Inmate in the East Mississippi Insane Hospital.
iii. Mary Jane Holifield, born abt 1874, Jones County, Mississippi; married Charles Matthew Barnes; died 1 Jan 1955, Miami, Dade, Florida.
iv. Vincent David Holifield, born 20 Jun 1881, Jones County, Mississippi; married Mattie Page, 1908; died 5 Nov 1930, Gulf Hammock, Florida.
v. Henry Wyatt Holifield, born 10 Jun 1883, Jones County, Mississippi; married Louise Bertie Speed; died 2 Apr 1965.
John M. Holifield is my 3rd cousin 3 times removed. Sarah Catherine Rivers is my 1st Cousin 5 times removed.
