Treasure Chest Thursday~Marriages of Alexander L. Brock

Alexander L. Brock was born  21 August 1855, a son of James Brock and Martha Jane Teal. He had 13 siblings; 5 brothers and 8 sisters.

Alexander L. Brock married 1st Amanda Knight on 30 December 1880 in Barbour County, Alabama. I have found no evidence of a death date for Amanda; but, on 17 May 1911, Alexander L. Brock married Sally White in Barbour County, Alabama.

Alexander’s first wife Amanda Knight was the daughter of  Harbert S. C. Knight and Mary Zitterow. Her father died 2 Dec 1879; her Mother passed away on 15 November 1880; Amanda and Alexander were married on 30 December1880. Both of her parents were deceased when she was first married.

As stated previously we don’t have a date of death for Amanda Knight Brock but we do know that Alexander was a widow in 1910; so Amanda passed away before 20 April 1910.

Amanuensis Monday~Trust Deed Between William A. Purvis and a Local Business called Marshall and Richardson, 1879

Amanuensis Monday is a genealogy blogging theme. It was started by John Newmark who writes the TransylvanianDutch blog.

His definition of Amanuensis is:
Amanuensis: A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

Today’s subject is an Anson County Trust Deed between William A. Purvis and a Local Business called Marshall and Richardson, 1879.1

William A. Purvis is my 2nd great grandfather. He and his son, William James (my great Grandfather) are trying to make a living farming approximately 100 acres of land. From what I can see in the available Trust Deeds they did manage to eke out a living from year to year.

Before turning to farming, my 2nd Great grandfather listed his occupation as a shoemaker. When this failed to provide for his growing family he turned to farming.

On 23 September 1899, William A. Purvis and his wife Betsy sold to J. D. Rhyne 12 acres of land for Fifty-four dollars (DB 33:370). These 12 acres were sliced off of the last 30 acres remaining in his ownership. Eighteen acres were preserved to support his 2nd wife Betsy and daughter Ella Frances. A year later Betsy sold the remaining  18 acres to J. D. Rhyne and moved in with her daughter and new son-in-law, Tom Tarleton.

William A. Purvis is not listed in the 1900 Census and Betsy is listed as a widow. The census was enumerated on 28 June 1900.

William A. Purvis died between 23 September 1899 and 28 June  1900. No grave, tombstone or death notice has been found.

William J. Gulledge Civil War Pension

William J. Gulledge was born about 1846, a son of William D. Gulledge and Martha A. Brock. His mother, Martha A. Brock was the daughter of Benjamin Brock and Temperance [LNU].  William J. were the oldest and first born child of William and Martha. William J. Gulledge had 10 siblings; 4 brothers and 6 sisters.

When the Civil War broke out, William J. Gulledge enlisted into Company "B", 57th Alabama on 6 May 1863.

After the war, William J. came home to marry Susan O. Hughes on 28 January 1866. in Pike County, Alabama.

In June 1903, William J. Gulledge made application for the Relief of Confederate Soldiers and Sailors.

After several iterations with the Pension Board, William J. Gulledge was approved for a pension.

In one instance, they referred to his military record as vague, uncertain and inaccurate. I can see why, I have found no record of him in the 57th Alabama.

William J. Gulledge is my 1st Cousin 3 times removed.

It’s Family Time~Hawley Rivers

Sometimes research is simple; at other times it’s very complex. Such is the case here.  Not much is known of Hawley Rivers, her marriage and the birth of her children. What I have been able to find is presented here. Two things are certain; she led a difficult life and she was a very resourceful woman.

Hawley Rivers was born about 1815, a daughter of William Rivers and Elizabeth “Betsy” Rivers.

Hawley Rivers and Robert Rivers were married about 1834 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Robert Rivers, son of Isaac Rivers and Nancy Parker, was born (date unknown).

Robert Rivers and Hawley Rivers had the following children:

        i.    William Rivers was born in 1835 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.
ii.    Nancy Rivers died before 1850. She was born in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

In 1880, Hawley age 66, is enumerated within the Household of Michael Davis. This may seem illogical until you realized the Michael wife’s Hulda is the sister of Hawley Rivers.

The exact date of Hawley's passing is unknown but is believed to be sometime in the mid-1880s. No tombstone or grave has been found for Hawley Rivers.

Hawley Rivers is my 3rd Great Grand Aunt.

Treasure Chest Thursday~The Marriage of Valentine Brock and Nancy W. Vandigriff

Today’s treasure chest document is the marriage of Valentine Brock and Nancy W. Vandigriff.

Valentine Brock b. 2 Feb 1815 was the son of Valentine (bef 1775-bef 1830) Brock and Elizabeth Lundy (3 Feb. 1780-25 April 1850).

Nancy W. Vandigriff, b. 22 March 1817 was the daughter of John Vandigriff and Margaret Crockett.
Valentine Brock and his wife Elizabeth Lundy had migrated from Chesterfield County, SC to Henry County, Georgia. I believe this move took place after 1820. In 1820, Valentine and Elizabeth are still living in Chesterfield County.

---------------Recorded 11th Febry 1892-----------------

This is an interesting Land Deed in that it identifies an ancestor that I was not aware of or have found a record of during my research. The oldest James A. Brock in my database was born 6 December 1829. That means that James A Brock mentioned within the Land Deed is missing from my database.
it being a tract of land conveyed to James A. Brock by James Brock by deed bearing date twenty fifth day of August AD 1830…

The James Brock mentioned is most likely James Valentine Brock, b. 13 Sep 1749.

This James A. Brock had to be born prior to 1809 to have land deeded to him in 1830.

“Under British common law, full majority was reached at the age of 21.  Anyone under 21 was legally an infant.  Only persons who had reached majority could perform certain legal actions: [2]
  • Buy or sell land without restriction”

Samuel W. Brock, Sr. is my 3rd Great grand uncle. The witness, Joel W. Brock is a son of  Samuel W. Brock.

Chesterfield County SC Estates~Estate Folder #80~Samuel Boatwright

This is a new series of posting, appearing every Sunday, on selected Estate Folders from the Estate files of Chesterfield County. No known estates exist for the period before the Civil War. They were destroyed with the burning of the Courthouse. There are a few “Equity Records” in the State Archives. Do not overlook this valuable resources if you are looking for ancestors in Chesterfield County, South Carolina.
Today we will be looking at the following Estate folder:

Folder #80
Samuel Boatwright 1

This estate folder begins at image #367 and ends with image #371. (images 367-371)

Estate of Samuel Boatwright

Samuel Boatwright was born 5 August 1832, a son of Lewis Boatwright, Jr and his wife Elizabeth Rebecca Davis.

He married Sarah Ann Hurst daughter of Isaac Hurst and Henrietta Rivers.

On 19 February 1863, Samuel Boatwright, age 30 passed away. We have no record from that period; so we don't know how Samuel died. Most likely it was either a heart attack or some sort of accident.

Samuel’s probate folder (#80) consists of only 4 pages of which only one page contained significant data. That page is image #370. This page shows outstanding notes due to the estate and verification by the administratrix that this is a true and factual listing. Double Click the images to enlarge.

Boatwright, Samuel, Probate, SC 1863

Samuel's death left his widow, 3 sons, and two daughters.

Samuel Boatwright is my 1st cousin 4 times removed.

Who Did George Washington Purvis Marry?

There are many George Washington Purvis but only one is the son of James F. Purvis, Sr, b. 1760.
This George Washington Purvis was born about 1810 and died in 1897. An exhaustive search for birth and death dates other than the year was futile to date.  The birth and Death year that we have are from his tombstone in the Antioch Cemetery, Rufus, Rankin County, Mississippi.

George W. Purvis

George Washington Purvis was twice married. His first wife was Mary Ann Patrick (1817-1859), daughter of  Luke Patrick and Gracy Heaton. George and Mary Ann were married 19 October 1838 in Rankin County, Mississippi. This twenty-one-year union produced 8 children; but Mary Ann did not survive the birth of her last child, a daughter, given the name Lucy Purvis.

The Death of Mary Ann in 1859 left George a Widow with 8 children ranging in age from infant to 20 years. The oldest child, Martha, age 19-20, was able to care for the children.

After 8 years of widowhood, George decided to marry again in 1867.

But, who did George take as his second wife?

This is a major controversy in this lineage. Did he marry:
Sarah E. Williams (18 Jun 1830 - 9 Jun 1906)
or
Sarah A. Williams (1 June 1830 - 3 June 1888)

Clearly, there is only one answer.

The correct Answer is that George Washington Purvis married Sarah the Widow Huff born 1830 died 1888. She is listed in the Census with both the middle initial “A” and Middle initial “E”.
On 31 August 1867, G. W. Purvis married the Widower Sarah Huff in Rankin County.

G. W. Purvis- Sarah E. Huff Marriage 1867

The Rankin County 1870 Census shows this blended Family. It also shows Sarah as Sarah E., age 37, b. 1833.

1870-Purvis-Rankin
Sarah Huff was the widow of Washington G. Huff who died in the Civil War.

It was obvious that I needed to see the Tombstones in place in the Cemetery. So on 30 Dec 2014 while en-route home after spending time with my daughter in Texas my wife and I stopped and visited the Antioch Cemetery.

The Tombstone for the female (wife) buried beside George W. Purvis reads:
Sarah A. Purvis
Geo. Purvis
Born
June 1, 1830
Died
June 9, 1888

This is the Family Plot for George Washington Purvis and Sarah A. (Huff) Purvis (Maiden name unknown). Some researchers say her maiden name is Williams.

George W. Purvis Family Plot

The other Sarah wife of another’s George Purvis has a Flat stone similar to the stone of George in the above picture.

That Flat stone, located somewhere in Antioch Cemetery reads:
SARAH E.  WIFE OF
GEORGE PURVIS
JUNE 18, 1830
JUNE 9, 1906

This stone can be viewed by looking at FindAGrave memorial # 2937292. I did not find the stone when I visited on 30 Dec 2014.

But, it doesn't say George Washington Purvis or George W. Purvis.

At present, I have no idea who the George Purvis is that married Sarah E. Williams (18 Jun 1830 - 9 Jun 1906).

Sarah A. Huff, second wife of George W. Purvis (1810-1897) died 9 June 1888 in Rankin County, Mississippi.

John W. Purvis Estate~Guardianship of His Three Children Grandchildren (Update)

Yesterday's post was on the Guardianship of three children John W., James F. and Emily M Purvis who based on the document portrayed suggested they were the children of John W. Purvis.  After further research I now know that is not true.

https://carolinafamilyroots.blogspot.com/2019/01/john-w-purvis-estateguardianship-of-his.html

The there children are the sons and daughter of George Washington Purvis and his wife Martha Adaline Franklin Purvis. They are the Grandchildren of John Purvis who most probable is John W. Purvis.

George Washington Purvis father of the children, Husband of Martha Adaline Franklin is the son of John Purvis.

John Purvis, Sr. died 23 September 1872 per page 2, Petition for Letters. His son, George Washington Purvis, died 14 February 1862 per his Tombstone in the Antioch Cemetery, Rufus, Rankin County, Mississippi.

John W. Purvis Estate~Guardianship of His Three Children

In August 1860 the George Washington Purvis and with Martha Adeline Franklin was visited by the “Census Taker” in Smith County, Mississippi. He documented this Family as Dwelling 599, Family 599, Line 23, Smith County, Mississippi. This is a listing of the Family from the 1860 Smith County Census.

1860 Smith, MS -G. W. Purvis

For many years until last week, I and many other researchers made the assumption that all the Children listed within the family were children of George W. and his wife Martha A. Purvis. After all, they seem to be born in a very common natural sequence within the family. This turned out to be a bad assumption as the forthcoming document will show.1

While doing a “page by page” review of Rankin County, MS probate records I came upon a Guardianship decree for John W. Purvis, James F. Purvis and Emily M. Purvis. This document was found in Rankin County “Accounts 1872-1894” film on FamilySearch, Image 48, pages 74 and 75 of the Accounts book. This document shows that these 3 children, John, James and Emily, are heirs at law of John W. Purvis, deceased.

This George W. Purvis is a real enigma. Many a researcher has looked for the parents of George Washington Purvis, age 25, born in Alabama without success. Many of these same researchers say he is a son of John Purvis, Jr. and  Elizabeth Lovett but this is doubtful. If you have any information about George or his wife  Martha Adeline Franklin I would like to hear from you. There is an E-mail link in the top right corner of this page.
