It’s Family Time~The George Winfield Baker Family

Mrs. George W. Baker of Rowan County, North Carolina was my 2nd Cousin 3
times removed. She was born Margaret Anne Sellers on 9 February 1871, a daughter of Phillip Albert Sellers and his wife Anna Jane Douglass. She had 8 siblings; 3 sisters and 5 brothers. She was the 3rd born of the 9 children born to Phillip and Anna Sellers. 

On 19 November 1890, Margaret Anne Sellers and George W. Baker were married in Chesterfield, South Carolina. He was a prominent citizen of Chesterfield  and at one time the editor of The Chesterfield Advertiser, a local Newspaper. 

They spent the early years of their marriage in Chesterfield County where he served as the County Superintendent of Education. Shortly before 1910, they moved to Rowan County, North Carolina where he was a Grocery Store Merchant and they spent the rest of their lives. 

George Winfield Baker and Margaret Anne Sellers had the following children:

i. Sallie J. Baker, born Oct 1891, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married John Mebane Beasley, 23 Nov 1912, Rowan County, North Carolina; died 26 Sep 1937, Los Angeles, California.

ii. Annie Mae Baker, born Nov 1893, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Robert Miller Jones, 30 Jun 1920, Rowan County, North Carolina.

iii. Hattie O. Baker, born 15 Oct 1895, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married John B. Fisher, 23 Apr 1924, New Hanover, North Carolina; died 9 Jan 1945, Granite Quarry, Rowan, North Carolina.

iv. George Winfield Baker, Jr.  was born on 5 Jun 1899 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. He died on 19 Apr 1936 at the age of 36 in Salisbury, Rowan, North Carolina.

v. Mary Louise Baker, born abt 1908, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married John Howard Lyerly, 23 Dec 1923, Rowan, North Carolina.


George Winfield Baker died on 23 May 1914 in Salisbury, Rowan county, NC.  

Margaret Anne (Sellers) Baker died 5 June 1935 in Salisbury, Rowan county, NC.  


NOTE: The Tombstone for George has his middle name as William; but, Margaret (Sellers) Baker’s obituary shows his name to be Winfield as well as many other online records. The obituary also says they were married  on 19 November 1890.
