In 1927, Harry Alexander Davis published a book entitled “The Davis Family (Davies and David) in Wales and America: Genealogy of Morgan David of Pennsylvania”
Today, researchers all over America and beyond are using this 445 page tome as a “roadmap” in their Genealogy research. If you use this book be aware that it does contain errors; so use but verify.
During the past several weeks I have been researching my 2nd Cousin 5 times removed, Eleazer David. Eleazer David was borne abt 1764, a son of Hugh Eleazer David and Catherine Evans.
Harry A. Davis in his book say that Hugh Eleazer and Catherine had two children, a daughter, unnamed, who died young and a son, Eleazer David born abt 1764.
He further stated that this Eleazer David was twice married; first to Ann Liston abt 1786. Ann (Liston) David died about 1797 and he married second (2) Mary, daughter of Robert Johnson. This does not match some of the documents I found. Adding to this confusion is online trees naming Isabella Keith as the 1st Wife of Eleazer David.
The only wife that I have proven, at this point, is Mary Johnson (2nd Wife) Daughter of Robert Johnson. But, I DO NOT have a marriage date for Eleazer and Mary. I do know that the last two children borne, daughter Mary and son Benjamin David, are children from this marriage.
Two names are often associated or said to be the 1st wife of Eleazer David. Those two names are Isabella Keith and Ann Liston. Harry A. Davis in the "Davis Book" names Ann Liston while online trees today says that his 1st wife was Isabella Keith. No sources were provided to prove that either lady, if they exist, were married to Eleazer David. Several land deeds do exist to show that there were indeed a close assoiciation between Eleazer David and two Liston's families; Edmund Liston and Abraham Liston and his wife Elizabeth. We also know that Abraham and Elizabeth had 8 children.
EUREKA: Eleazer David 1st Wife was proved while researching for this blog post. Proven 1st Wife of Eleazer David is Isabella Keith, widow of John Keith. The widow, Isabella Keith and Eleazer David was married in February 1779 by a minister.
No record of an Ann Liston marriage to Eleazer David has been found.
Further, this is proven by the probate file.
In NewCastle County Md Deed Book W1:401 [dated 23 August 1834] we find the following:
(pg 401) Whereas Eleazer David late of the Hundred, County and State aforesaid was in his life time, and at the time of his death, seized in his demeanor as of fees of and in sundry tracts parcels and pieces of land, marshes and swamps in the Hundred aforesaid, and being so seized died, having first made his last will and testament in writing and left to survive him a widow Mary and five children. Keith David, Ann Lockeman, Eleazer David, Mary David, and Benjamin David. The two last of which are parties hereto, the said Mary the younger having since intermarried with the aforesaid James Richards party hereto, the said widow Mary having deceased, the said lands and premises becomes the sole right of said children, being bounded, and described as follows, viz: ??
In NewCastle County Md Deed Book H5:241[Dated 11 June 1840] we find this additional information:
Eleazer has passed away, leaving his wife Mary (2nd Wife) and 5 children:
1. Keith David
2. Ann Lockerman
3. Eleazer David
4. Mary David (Mary has also married James Richards)
5. Benjamin David
(Page 241} Whereas Eleazer ….. at the time of his death seized in his, deneme as of fee of and in sundry tracts, parcels, ….of lands, marshes, and swamps, in Said Hundred, and being so thereof seized did having first made his last will and testament in writing, and left to survive him, a widow Mary David and Benjamin David, parties hereto the said widow Mary has since died; and the said lands and premises, becomes the sole right of said children, whereby the said Keith David entitled unto an undivided fifth part of all said lands, according to the said Will, being bounded and described as follows viz.
In NewCastle County Md Deed Book S-4:405 [dated 23 August 1834] we find the following:
Whereas Eleazer David late of the Hundred, county and state aforesaid was in his life time, and at the time of his death, seized in his demesne as of fee, of and in sundry tracts, parcels and pieces of lands, marshes and swamps in the Hundred aforesaid, and being so wired died having first made his last will and testament in writing, and left to survive him a widow Mary and five children, Keith David, Ann Lockerman (who was the mother of the said Benjamin Lockerman and Eleazer Lockerman, which are party hereto. Eleazer David, Mary Davis, and Benjamin David (who is party hereto, the said widow Mary having deceased, and the said lands and premises become the sole right of the said children, and Whereas the said Ann Lockerman, and her husband Garrett Lockerman, have died intestate, leaving to survive them, three sons only, namely the said Benjamin Lockerman and Eleazer Lockerman and Garrett Lockerman, which three sons are entitled to the one fifth part of all the said lands and premises which the said Eleazer David [Sr.] died seizes of, being bounded and described as follows,
Here we are told:
- that Eleazer David is dead
- Surviving are his wife, Mary and 5 children
- That Ann Lockerman is the mother of the said Benjamin Lockerman and Eleazer Lockerman
- Ann Lockerman and her husband Garrett Lockerman, have died intestate, leaving to survive them, three sons only, namely the said Benjamin Lockerman and Eleazer Lockerman and Garrett Lockerman
This proves that Ann David, daughter of Eleazer and his 1st wife married Garrett Lockerman and they had three sons and Eleazer Lockerman, Benjamin Lockerman and Garrett Lockerman.
Several Questions have been left unanswered.
1. Who is Ann Liston?
2. What happen to Eleazer David, Jr. b. abt 1793; married Catherine Test bef 1813? (Deeds, Lib. Q4, fol. 273.) A Newcastle, Delaware Land Deed executed on 2 March 1813 show that Eleazer David, Jr. wife Catherine Test was deceased.
Deed Snippett –DB Q-4, page 273

[Appoquinimink] Hundred County of Newcastle and State of Delaware and Catherine, his wife (late Catherine Test) of the one part and John Lancaster of same Hundred and county afsd of the other part.”
