Interrelationships Between the Brock and Prophet Families

A few days ago we had a Genealogy Serendipity moment when we found a document that revealed the maiden name of the wife of my 1st Cousin 3X removed.  Sarah Jane wife of Charles A. Brock had spent many years in my genealogy database without her maiden name.

The impact of this document was much more significant than we imagined at the time of its discovery. Sarah Jane’s maiden name was revealed to be PROPHET. When we look further into her lineage we found the Sarah Jane was the daughter of Zack Prophet and his wife Mary and that she had 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

After posting my blog post I received the following comments from Bonnie Young. Thanks Bonnie!!

I have a theory...I believe Mary PROPHET Female, Daughter, age 2, born in NC listed above in your post is Mary K. Proboff Brock buried in Old Saint David's Episcopal Church Cemetery (1st wife of Irvin Samuel Brock) mother of Mary Kizzie Brock Bullard. It would make sense then that Mary Kizzie Brock is listed as a niece in the 1880 census with Charles A Brock and his wife Sarah (listed above as Sarah Prophet). Also Sarah Brock lived with Mary Kizzie in her later years. It's Sarah Prophet Brock's sister's daughter.

Her theory turned out to be correct. In the 1860 Census we can visually see the family composition.

1860 CENSUS: Cedar Hill, Anson, North Carolina; Page:#241B & 242A (Stamped), Line:#36-40 & 1-4, Dwelling:#231, Family:#311; Zach PROPHET Male, head, age 38, Farmer, born in NC; Mary PROPHET Female, Wife, age 39,  born in NC; Sarah PROPHET Female, Daughter, age 16, born in NC; William PROPHET Male, Son, age 14, born in NC; John PROPHET Male, Son, age 12, born in NC; Charity PROPHET Female, Daughter, age 10, born in NC; Emma PROPHET Female, Daughter, age 8, born in NC; Richmond PROPHET Male, Son, age 5,  born in NC and Mary PROPHET Female, Daughter, age 2,  born in NC.

One of those sister, Mary, had married a BROCK named Ervin Samuel Brock. Ervin Samuel Brock and Mary K. Prophet were married about 1875. Their only child, Mary Kizzie Brock, was born August 1876. It cost Mary K. Prophet Brock her life. Mary K. Brock died 18 August 1876, which most likely is the day or day after Mary Kizzie was born.

For years, Mary K, Brock tombstone in the churchyard of St. David’s Episcopal Church had been miss transcribed as PROBOFF resulting in a dead end when trying to research her heritage. Today it has been updated and corrected on her FindAGrave memorial. Thank to a dedicated FindAGrave Volunteer.

Sarah Jane Prophet Brock, wife of Charles A. Brock, and Mary K. Prophet Brock, wife of Ervin Samuel Brock, are sisters.

Charles A. Brock, and  Ervin Samuel Brock are 1st Cousins.

In documents online Sarah J. Prophet referred to Mary Kizzie Brock as her niece. Mary first shows up in the 1880 Census as the 3 year old niece of Charles A. and Sarah J. Brock. She is listed as M. K. Brock.

Mary’s tombstone shows her to be the “Wife of Irvin Brock. Daughter of Z. and Mary Proboff.”

Reserach shows that she is the daughter of  Zack and Mary Prophet.

 Summary.

This one document shows that Sarah Jane wife of Charles A. Brock was a Prophett.

It also shows the Mary K. Proboff was Sarah’s younger sister is the 1st Wife of Ervin Samuel Brock.

Mary Kizzie Brock had been proven to be the daughter of Ervin Samuel Brock and Mary K. Prophet and has been placed with her parents.
