 Last Saturday’s “Family Time” blog post provided insight into the family's of Alsey and Lucy (Morris) Brock and named their two sons and their wives.

Today, we will look at the family of the two sons, Pleasant A. and Charles A. Brock/

The Alsey Brock family was a close knit family. 

Charles A. and  his younger brother, Pleasant A. Brock were business men doing business in Cheraw, South Carolina under the name Charles A Brock & Bro.  They owned several town lots in the area of Market Street and  Front Street. Among those owned were Lots 9, 10, 11, 12, 241, 242, 246, 280, 281. Charles also managed the Cheraw dispensary.

Pleasant A. Brock married Martha Eugenia Horne on 10 February 1869 in Wadesboro, North Carolina. Martha was born 3 March 1852 a daughter of William E. Horne and Sarah Hamilton of Wadesboro, North Carolina. There were no children borne to this union most probably due to the short time of marriage. Pleasant A. Brock passed away on 28 February 1873. He and Martha had been married 4 years 12 days. His death was due to Typhoid fever. His death date and cause was recorded in the Pleasant A. Brock's Bible in possession of a Mr.  Gandy, Society Hill, South Carolina. 

His widow, Martha Eugenia (Horne) Brock married Thomas Ashton Gandy on 20 July 1875 in Chesterfield, South Carolina. This date is also included in the Family Bible. Martha Eugenia (Horne) Brock and Thomas Ashton Gandy had 4 children; 2 sons and 2 daughters.

In the settlement of Pleasant A. Brock estate, his widow, Martha Eugenia (Horne) (Brock) Gandy was deeded possession of Lots 9 & 10 in the Town of Cheraw, South Carolina.[DEED BOOK #4, Pages 767, 768 and 769]

Brock were seized and possessed of various Town Lots in the Town of Cheraw in the State aforesaid, and whereas the said Pleasant A. Brock has departed this life, Intestate leaving as his Heirs at law his Widow Martha E. who has since intermarried with the said Thomas A. Gandy; his mother, Lucy Brock and his brother the said Charles A. Brock, and whereas the individual half interest, of the said Pleasant A. Brock in the said Lots has thereby become desirable amongst his said Heirs at Law and whereas it has been agreed by the sad Charles A. Brock, as Senior of the said Partnership and by the said Heirs at Law to divide the said Real estate, so as to set apart to the said Martha E in Severalty, her share therein, and whereas the said Martha E. has agreed to take, in full of her share therein the two Lots known as Numbers Nine (9) and Ten (10) and in consideration there to release to the said Lucy Brock and Charles A. Brock all her right, title, share and interest in the remaining Lots know as Numbers Eleven (11) Twelve (12) two hundred and forty six (246) two hundred and eighty (280) two hundred and eighty one (281)here after more particularly described .

Charles A. Brock married Sarah Jane, aka “Sallie" [Maiden name unknown] sometime before August 1866. We know from Chesterfield County, SC Deed (DB 1, page 15) posted in last weeks “Family Time” post that Charles A. Brock and Sarah Jane “Sallie [Last name Unknown] were married before execution of this deed on 4 August 1866.

Charles and Sarah had no children. However, Charles A. and Sarah took a very special interest in Mary Kizzie/Kerry Brock.

Lucy BROCK to W. T. POWELL. Lucy puts all of her property in trust with W. T. POWELL to hold the same for the benefit of her children. She refers to the natural love for her son Charles A.              Whereas Lucy Brock late of the County of Chesterfield, State of South Carolina by her Deed bearing Date the 18th Day of March 1880 conveyed the property hereinafter Described to Wm. T. Powell, in trust, for the uses and trusts fully set forth reference being thereto have, will more fully appear.
             And whereas the said Wm. T. Powell having died many years ago the Court by order, duly appointed A. G. Bright as Trustee to carry out the terms of the said trust Deed, and he has been acting as said trustee.
             And whereas Charles A. Brock and Sarah J. Brock, the immediate beneficiaries and Cestui Que Trusts, in said Deed named have both died, leaving no child, or children, nor did the said Charles A. Brock leave any child, or children of any other wife.
             And whereas Kizzie M. Brock who has since inter-married with one George S. Bullard) was named in said Deed as the sole beneficiary of Cestui Que Trust, after the death of said Charles A. Deed Book 5, Page 782-785, Lucy BROCK to W. T. POWELL. Lucy puts all of her property in trust with W. T. POWELL to hold the same for the benefit of her children. She refers to the natural love for her son Charles A. BROCK and his wife Sarah J. BROCK and Mary Kerry BROCK the child of Irvin S. BROCK.

This deed (DB 5:782) clearly says Charles and his wife Sarah had no children and Mary Kerry/Kizzie was the child  of Irvin S. Brock. The problem is that there are 3 Irvin/Ervin Samuel Brock in Chesterfield County. 

Deed Book 17, Page 533-536 says “And whereas Kizzie M. Brock who has since inter-married with one George S. Bullard) was named in said Deed as the sole beneficiary of Cestui Que Trust, after the death of said Charles A. Brock and Sarah J. Brock, should they leave no children, and should the said Charles A. Brock leave no child, or children by any other wife. 

Yesterday (13 OCT.) was a good day of research. I unexpectedly found a short death notice in Williamsburg County, South Carolina that told me exactly who the father of Mary/Kerry/Kizzie Brock (Mrs. George T. Ballad) and when he died. 

Obituary:

Mr. Irvin S. Brock, of Cheraw, the father-in-law of Mr. Geo. T Bullard, of this place, died at his home last Tuesday.

Among the 3 Irvin S. Brock, the Irvin that died in 1897 was Irvin Samuel Brock, born about 1855, died 12 October 1897, son of Stephen Brock and Nancy Smith. Irvin Samuel married Mary A Stubbs before 1878. Irvin Samuel and Mary A. Stubbs had 6 known children; 4 daughters and two sons. But until yesterday no one knew which Irvin Samuel Brock was the father of   Mary Kizzie Brock.   

Is Mary Kizzie/Kerry the daughter of Mary A. (Stubbs) Brock? I don’t know. Without a definite marriage date I cannot say that Mary A. (Stubb) Brock is her Mother. In 1880, Mary was found in the household of Charles A. and Sarah Jane Brock not in her father’s Irvin Samuel Brock household. Charles A. and Irvin Samuel Brock are 1st Cousins.  

Charles A. Brock had some rough times after passing of his brother, Pleasant A. Brock and in August 1878 filed for bankruptcy. (Deed 5, page 468, Filed for Bankruptcy)

On 23 September 1898, Charles A. Brock passed away at his place of business.

Obituary:

Cheraw, Sept. 24.—Mr. Charles A. Brock, the dispenser for the Cheraw dispensary, dropped dead at 11 o’clock today while in the discharge of his duties. The cause of his death is supposed to have been apoplexy. He was for many years a prominent merchant in this place. “The State”, (Columbia, SC) September 25, 1898, page 6, Col. 3.

Sarah Jane (Maiden name unknown) Brock passed away at the home of Mrs. George T. Bullard, aka Mary Kizzie/Kerry Brock on 21 October 1900.  

Obituary:

Mrs. Brock, who has been living here with her son-in-law Mr. Geo. T. Bullard died Sunday night. Her remains were carried to Cheraw, S.C. yesterday for burial.

 Alsey Brock and Lucy (Morris) Brock are my 2nd Great Grand Uncle & Aunt.

It’s Family Time~Alsey Brock

Alsey Brock was a young boy, 9 years 8 months old, when the Union Army captured his father,  Hezekiah Brock, on his farm and made him a prisoner-of-war on 12 March 1865.  When his father died in prison on 12 June 1865, after the war had ended months earlier Alsey was still a lad of nine years. Alsey has 3 older brothers and 2 younger brothers.

Hezekiah’s death in prison left his wife Sarah “Sallie’ Morris Brock a widow with six young boys all under the age of 15 to raise alone. Sarah Morris Brock never remarried and she raised her six boys to be fine young men in their community.

All the boys, with the exception of Alsey, married and raised families of their own. Alsey Brock never married. Sarah can be found as Head of Household, after the war, in both the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Alsey is enumerated in the household with his mother along with others children.

In 1900, Sarah,  at the age of 71, can be found in the home of her son, Alsey Brock, age 44. Her son Pleasant Brock is living in the next household.  

Sarah “Sallie Morris Brock, mother of six boys, died 21 October 1902. At the time of her death, Sarah “Sallie” Morris Brock owned 39 1/2 acres of land conveyed to her by Jas. O. Edwards by Deed bearing date of December the 19th 1876. That land was conveyed by her sons to their brother Alsey Brock on 30 October 1902.

Brock, and Pleasant Brock in the State aforesaid County of Chesterfield in consideration of the sum of Seventy five Dollars to me in hand paid at and before (pg 133) the sealing of these presents by Aley Brock in the State aforesaid, County of Chesterfield the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have granted. bargained, sold and released and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell and release unto the said Aley Brock.
All that certain tract, piece, parcel of land situate in the County and State aforesaid lying on the east side of Swaney {??} Branch bounded as followers, Beginning on a Stake in S. J. Parker line and runs South 13, E. 16-050 C. to a Stake 3X near little Sawneys Branch thence North 63 E. 3025, C to a Stake, 3X over a branch thence North 23 E. 10.00 C. to a Pine stump X thence South 78 W. 35.50  Chains to beginning,

Hezekiah Brock final resting place is a “Mass” grave at Pt. Lookout, Maryland. Sarah “Sallie” Morris Brock’s final resting place is unknown. No tombstone has been found marking her resting place. Her death date was recorded in a “Martin Family” Bible.

The last known record of Alsey Brock, a bachelor and lifelong farmer in Chesterfield County, is the 1910 Chesterfield County Census. Alsey Brock died after 27 April 1910, the date this census was taken.

If anyone reading this post has any information on the death of Alsey Brock I would like to hear from you.

Surely, someone in the extended Brock families living in Chesterfield County and elsewhere have some information or family folklore about Alsey’s death sometime between 1910 and 1920. 

Alsey Brock is my Great Grand Uncle.

It’s Family Time~Alsey Brock

Alsey Brock was born 25 June 1855, a son of Hezekiah Brock and Sarah ‘Sallie’ Morris.

Alsey’s father, Hezekiah Brock, was captured on 1 March 1865 and made a prisoner of war (POW). He was forced marched to Wilmington, NC and placed on a troop train to Pt. Lookout, Maryland.

Alsey was 6 years old when his father was taken away and he would never see his father again. His father, Hezekiah, died in Prison on 12 June 1865 months after the War had ended.

Alsey was a bachelor and lifelong farmer in Chesterfield County.  He died sometime after 27 April 1910, the date of Census enumeration. No record of his death has been found.

Alsey Brock is my Great Grand Uncle.

Today’s subject is a Chesterfield County Land Deed, B. F. Brock & Others to M. F. Horn

The 6 men named within this Land Deed are the sons of Hezekiah Brock and his wife Sarah “Sallie” Morris.

On 12 March 1865 during the invasion of Chesterfield County, Union forces under command of Gen. Kilpatrick (Calvary Commander) took Hezekiah Brock from his home, made him a prisoner of War, and forced marched him to New Bern, North Carolina. From New Bern he was transported by train to the union POW Camp at Pt. Lookout, Maryland. The six boys (now men) and their Mother never saw their father or husband again; Hezekiah Brock died while imprisoned on 12 June 1865 at Pt. Lookout POW Camp. Maryland.

While there is no mentioned of Estate Lands, the fact that all six sons signed this Deed tells me that the lands being sold are Estate Lands of their Father, Hezekiah Brock.

Brock of the County of Chesterfield and State of South Carolina for and in consideration of one hundred and twenty eight Dollars to us in hand paid we have granted bargained sold and released and by these presents do grant Bargain sell and release unto W. F. Horn of the same State and County all that piece parcel or tract of land Situated in the said County on the South side of big Westfield Creek beginning and running as follows viz: on a small black Gum 3X old on the back of said Creek and runs S. W. 18° 18 chains to old pines Stump 3X0 thence SW 53° 16 chains to sassafras stake 3X0 thence NW 87° 8 chains to small red oak 3X thence N.E. 25° 26 chains to white oak 3X0 on the bank of said Creek thence down said Creek the various courses to the beginning containing Thirty Two (32) Acres (more or less). Surname Saturday~Alsey Brock

The first Brock to settle in the this area of North and South Carolina was  Valentine Brock.
Valentine entered the United States, arriving in Philadelphia onboard the ship Queen of Denmark, George Parish commander, from Rotterdam via Cowes, England, and took the oaths with the other 98 adult [age 16 and older] male passengers at the  [old] courthouse on Friday 4 Oct 1751. By 1780, Valentine and his family had migrated to Richmond County, NC and can be found listed in the 1790 census for Richmond County. ^{1 2}

All the Brock in the Anson and Richmond County, NC and Chesterfield County SC are related to this early pioneer. 

Alsey Brock is a name that is only found in my direct line of Brock. Over the past 223 years there has been only two male children named Alsey in this line.

The first Alsey Brock, was born 10 Sept 1815 to Benjamin and Temperance Brock. He died 13 March 1858. This Alsey Brock was a brother to my 2nd Great Grand Father Hezekiah Brock. Alsey and Hezekiah married sisters, Lucy and Sarah Sallie Morris. ^{3 4} 

The next Alsey Brock was born on 25 Jun 1855 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.^5 6 7 8




He is a son of Hezekiah and Sarah Sallie Morris Brock.

No evidence of a marriage for Alsey has been found. He was found in all census from 1860-1910  and they all showed him as a single man. ^{9 10}  After the death of his Father, Hezekiah Brock, in a POW camp; Alsey assumed responsibility for the care of the family and his Mother Sarah Morris Brock. Sarah was still alive in 1900 and can be found in Alsey’s household.

No death date has been found for Alsey Brock but it is known that he died sometime after 27 Apr 1910. In the 1910 Census, his age is listed as 55 years. 

The first Alsey Brock is my 2nd Great Grand Uncle.

The second Alsey Brock is my Great Grand Uncle..

Lucy Morris and her sister Sarah married bothers Alsey and Hezekiah Brock.

Alsey Brock and his wife Lucy are my 2nd great grand Uncle and Aunt.
His brother Hezekiah and his wife Sarah are my 2nd great Grand Parents.

Lucy and Alsey were married about 1835. Their firstborn, Charles A. Brock was born on 26 November 1836. Then their only other child, a son, Pleasant A. Brock was born 10 March 1839.

Alsey Brock is my second grand Uncle. He is the oldest brother of my second great grandfather Hezekiah Brock, Alsey and Hezekiah were sons of Benjamin Brock and Temperance (LNU).

Alsey Brock was born on 10 Sep 1815 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. He died on 13 Mar 1858 at the age of 42 and was buried at Old Saint David's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Alsey Brock married Lucy Morris, born on 13 Jul 1822 in Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Lucy died on 4 Jan 1887 at the age of 64 in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina and buried beside her husband in Old Saint David's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Alsey Brock and Lucy Morris had the following children:

i. Charles A. Brock, born 26 Nov 1836, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina; married Sarah J.(LNU); died 23 Sep 1898, Chesterfield, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

ii. Pleasant A. Brock, born 10 Mar 1839, Chesterfield County, South Carolina; married Martha Eugenia Horne, 10 Feb 1869,[1] Wadesboro, Anson, North Carolina; died 28 Feb 1873, Cheraw, Chesterfield, South Carolina.

There's a real interesting deed on file in the Chesterfield County Courthouse between Lucy Brock and W. T. Powell.  After the death of Alsey and her son Pleasant, Lucy places all her property in trust for the benefit of her children and grandchildren.  

DEED: Lucy BROCK to W. T. POWELL.

Lucy puts all of her property in trust with W. T. POWELL to hold the same for the benefit of her children. She refers to the natural love for her son Charles A. BROCK and his wife Sarah J. BROCK and Mary Kerry BROCK the child of Irvin S. BROCK. Ten ($10.00) dollars paid to W. T. POWELL and 3 lots (Lot #156, 157 and 158) in the Town of Cheraw to be placed in trust. One was the lot where her son Pleasant A. BROCK resided at the time of his death (d. 28 Feb. 1873). W. T. POWELL shall hold the same for the use and benefit of Charles A. BROCK, his wife Sarah J. BROCK and Mary Nezzie BROCK, the child of Irvin S. BROCK, living with Charles A. BROCK and Sarah J. Brock.

If Charles and Sarah should not have children then at their death to pass to Mary Kezzie BROCK, and if she is not living to pass to SARAH BROCK, the widow of Hezekiah BROCK.[2]
