52 Cousins~The George W. & Lydia G. Rummage Family

Lydia G. Laton was born about 1830, the first born daughter of John Laton, Sr. and his wife Catherine Dry of Stanly County, North Carolina. She had two older brothers, a younger brother and one younger sister. 

On 27 Nov 1856, Lydia G. Laton, age 22, and George W Rummage, age 20, were married in Stanly County, North Carolina.

Their only child, a son, arrived on 30 April 1858. In the 1860 Census we find the family in Stanly County, North Carolina. 

Then on 12 April 1861, we know from history, that our Civil War started taking many young men away from their families to fight a War.

George W. Rummage enlisted on 28 February 1862, at Salisbury, NC as a Private with Company 'C', 42nd NC Infantry. Lydia and baby Robert were left along without their protector. Both of Lydia’s parents were deceased when the war started. There is no indication in George’s service record that he was granted leave between his enlistment and his admission to Winder Hospital on 24 October 1864. So its safe to say that Lydia never saw her husband again once he left home that Friday morning, 28 February 1862.

Private George W. Rummage was admitted to Winder Hospital on 24 October 1864. He died of disease on 6 November 1864 and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Richmond City, Virginia; PLOT: Section: Soldiers Section W Lot: 117

Lydia G. (Laton) Rummage died March 1869 and young Robert, age 11, became an orphan.  Lydia’a tombstone shows she was born in 1830 and died in March 18??. I cannot honestly say that it is 1869. See for yourself at https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/102681955/lydia-g-rummage

In 1880, Robert is abge 21 and can be found in his Rummage Grandparents home; the home of Thomas and Nancy Rummage.

Robert Rummage, the only known child of George W. and Lydia G. Rummage. He was a farmer. I found no indication that he was ever married. At age 57, George F. Rummage died 7 Sep 1915 of heart disease in Albemarle, Stanly County, NC.  

Lydia G. (Laton) Rummage is my 1st Cousin 4X Removed. 

Robert Rummage is my 2nd Cousin 3X Removed. 

Last Will and Testament of John Laton, Sr.

John Laton, Sr., was born abt 1777 in Anson County, North Carolina; parents unknown. (Some say he was born in Virginia). He was twice married. After his first wife passed away leaving him with six children John then married Catherine Dry on 10 June 1824. To this union were borne an additional five children.

John Laton died in July 1852 leaving the below Last Will and Testament. His will was probated during the August Session 1852.

I have provided a link to this will in the footnotes at the bottom of this post; therefore, in the interest of saving loading time; only one of three pages are contained within this blog post.

John Laton Will

            In the name of God Amen. 

I John Laton Senr of the County of Stanly and State of North Carolina doth this the nineteenth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty four make & publish this my last Will & Testament revoking all other wills & codicils by me previously made being in low state of health but of sound mind & memory blessed be God.
First: calling to mind that man has once to die and considering my worldly affairs & wishing to dispose of time as hereinafter mentioned; first that my body be buried in a Christian like manner.
Secondly: That all my just debts be paid out of my estate by my Executors. 
Third: I lend unto my beloved wife Katharine the plantation on which I now live containing five hundred acres be the same more or lefs on the waters of Clover Fork Creek adjoining the lands [of] Breedy Carter & Thomas Rice & Timothy Ragsdale & Starling McDaniel & others during her life time or widowhood, and after her death to be divided among the following children; Nancy Bullen, Huldah Saunders, Sarah Bullen, William Laton, John Laton.
& Elizabeth Rice, Excepted which I give fifteen dollars to be paid out of my Estate by my Executor.
Also I give fifteen dollars to my son David Laton to be paid out of my Estate by my Executor which moneys shall be paid at the end of two years after my decease. Also I give the stock of all Kind to my wife Katharine on the before mentioned plantation, farming utensils & everything belonging to said plantation, also all the household & kitchen furniture of all description.
Huldah Saunders, Nancy Bullen, Sarah Bullen & William Laton & John Laton they shall pay over to Elizabeth Rice & to David Laton the sum of fifteen dollars to the said David Laton & to Elizabeth Rice to make them equal.
Fourth: I give and bequeath unto my five children not before mentioned all my lands lying on the  waters of Jacobs Creek & Camp branch containing five hundred acres more or less to be equally divided amongst them to, viz. Martin, Franklin, Lydia, Katharine & James Adam.
Fifth: My will & desire is that the property of every description remaining on the plantation where I now live after my wife's death shall be sold at public sale and equally divided among all my children, Elizabeth Rice and David Laton excepted.
Sixth: I will & bequeath unto my beloved wife Katharine four hundred dollars that I have out at interest and after her death to be equally divided amongst her children, to viz: Martin, Franklin, Lydia, Katharine and James Adam, all the rest of my children excepted, viz. Elizabeth Rice, Nancy Bullen, William Laton, Huldah Saunders, John Laton, Sally Bullen, and David Laton.
Further I do appoint my beloved wife, Katherine and my worthy son Franklin Alexander Laton my Executors to this my last will & testament in witnefs whereof I John Laton Sen'r. the Testator have  to this my last will written on one sheet of paper set my hand and seal the day & year first above written.

         Then the foregoing last will and testament of John Laton deceased was produced in open court and offered for probate, and the execution thereof duly proved by the oaths of Elisha Laton & John F. Miller the subscribing witnefses thereto, and Katherine Laton & Franklin Alexander Laton the Executors & Executrix therein named was duly qualified upon which Letters Testamentary issued to then and the said will & testament ordered to be recorded.

The Marriage of Catherine Dry and John Laton

A few weeks ago I went looking for a marriage record of the marriage of Catherine Dry and John Laton. My fist attempt was a search of the wonderful Cabarrus County  marriage Bonds but I was unsuccessful in my search.

Most on-line trees shows that John Laton married Catherine Franklin Dry in  1811.

• Where did this date come from?
• Where did the middle name Franklin come from for Catherine Dry.

I don't consider Ancestry Family Tree to be a source and the marriage on these trees are not sourced. 

Next I searched two North Carolina Marriage Databases found on FamilySearch. Again there was no record of a marriage between Catherine Dry and John Laton.

After many hours of search I had absolutely no results in finding a marriage record for this couple and for my time on the computer. 

My last resort was the War of 1812 pension file for John Laton and it was in his pension file that I found a record of their marriage, the date it took place and the place of marriage.

John Laton and Catherine Dry were married on  10 June 1824 in Montgomery County, North Carolina.

She [Catherine Dry Laton] further states that she was married to the said John Laton, in Montgomery County now Stanly County, on or about 10th June 1824, by  and John  Kendall who was, a Justice of the Peace, and that her name before the marriage was Catherine Dry. ¹

The above snippet is a source and it was found within the pension file of John Laton.
Catherine Dry had no middle name on any document that I have found and there was no middle name mentioned in the document sourced above. 

Catherine Dry is the daughter of Johan Martin Dry and Catherine Keppel.

Catherine Dry is my 3rd Great Grand Aunt.

It’s Family Time~Catharine Dry and John Laton, Sr. Family

While selecting a family member to write about I realized that somehow I had not fully researched this family. However, I decided to stick with the family in hopes that it might reach a cousin who may have more information. 

Catharine Dry was born in 1791 a daughter of Johann Martin Dry and Catherine Keppel.

On 10 June 1824, at the age of 33, Catherine married John Laton, Sr. in Montgomery County, North Carolina.

John Laton, Sr.  and Catherine had the following children:

    i.    Martin Laton was born about 1826.
    ii.    Franklin Alexander Laton, born 13 Aug 1828, Montgomery County, North Carolina; married Martha Ann Solomon, abt 1847; died 11 May 1906, Albemarle, Stanly, North Carolina. 
    iii.    Lydia G. Laton, born abt 1830; married George W. Rummage, abt 1857; died 1869.
    iv.    Catharina Laton was born about 1833. She died on 11 Mar 1894 at the age of 61. Find A Grave Memorial# 102681634.
    v.    James Laton was born about 1838.

Catherine Dry Laton is my 3rd Great Grand Aunt.

Treasure Chest Thursday~John Laton–War of 1812

 Transcription:

That her said husband volunteered at Old Henderson , on or about the ________________, 18___, for the term of six months, and continued in actual service in the said war for the term of six months and was honorably discharged at Salisbury, on or about ______________________.
She further states that she was married to the said John Laton in Montgomery County now Stanly County on or about 10^th June 1824 by one John Kendall who was, a Justice of the peace, and that her name before her marriage was Catherine Dry, and that her husband died in July 1852.

John Laton died in July 1852 and the land he received was sold by his executor. On 5 June 1855, after his death, Catherine Dry, his wife, daughter of Martin Dry and Catherine Keppel made application for a Bounty Land Warrant for herself based his service in the War of 1812.  This is a portion of that document which can be found on Fold3.com at https://fold3.com/image/1/315053485
