While doing research this past week I was looking for Margaret Sellers. I found her in the 1940 with a list of other young ladies as roommates in the NYA home. [1]
This home is listed on page 216B, Line 52, Household #241 with Doris LANEY as Head Mistress of the house. Lines 53 through 80 are all young ladies housed in this home. The home is located in the Court House Township of Chesterfield County in May 1940.
This peaked my curiosity because I had never heard of the NYA or the NYA Home. My next stop was Google to find exactly what the NYA was and when it was established or existed.
NYA – National Youth Administration (NYA)
The National Youth Administration was part of President Roosevelt NEW DEAL program. It’s focus “was on providing work and education for Americans between the ages of 16 and 25.”[2]
Two programs were operated by the NYA:
- The Works Project Program to train unemployed, out-of-school youth
- The Student Aid Program to provide work-study training for high school, college, and graduate students.” [3]
